Time-Life to release Real Ghostbusters DVD set?

YAY! I got tired of sitting on this one!

TVShowsOnDVD.com hinted on a rumour that RGB might be coming to DVD, and that rumour is now filling in a bit more – while there has been no official announcement made, TVSoDVD’s source says Time-Life will be releasing a massive 26 disc set, complete with the Slimer and The Real Ghostbusters episodes. Beyond that, little is known, but take heart; Gord at TVSoDVD is hardcore in his reporting. If he didn’t think this had a good chance of being true, he wouldn’t report it – stay tuned!

If this is true, then 2008 will be a truly great year. Viva La Ghostbusters!

  2. castewar says:

This is less about it being true or not, and more about whether the deal goes through or not, so fingers crossed.

  3. > YAY! I got tired of sitting on this one!

Yeah, I had a hard time keeping it secret myself.

  4. Matt says:

So this isn’t set in stone, then? If they haven’t started production on the sets yet, how will it make release by the Fall? That would mean production would have had to already start in order to make a deadline like that – and if they’re digitally remastered (which I’m sure they would be, given the quality of previous Time Life releases) that takes even more time.

Either all this, or Sony is magically preparing the set and Time Life will just distribute? This is a bit confusing if the deal hasn’t gone through yet.

  5. Chris says:

    WOOOOoOOOoooooOOoooooOOOO!!!!

  6. I just got dizzy. Oh my god, I am going to be so broke. wow. lol : )

  7. castewar says:

Matt, we don’t know if the deal has gone through – the point is that it’s not a question of it Time-Life is interested, but if the deal has been finalized, which it may or may not have, we just don’t know.

And they could make the sets in time for Fall if they were starting now (but, again, for all we know, they started prior to now… we don’t know.)

  8. Axel says:

wow! that is so cool! i hope they really do that! am a get my a copy! lol! along with the new GB game! yeah! i am more of fan of the real ghostbusters than the xgb. Bustin, makes me feel good! yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah! Ghostbusters 4 ever 4 life! lol!

I’m not sure this is great news. As far as I can tell Time-Life doesn’t ship outside the US. I live in Canada and when I checked out the Time-Life website about the Get Smart complete TV series set, it doesn’t look like they ship outisde the US. So what use is this if every GB fan can’t get it? Why the hell is Sony licensing it? If they’d release it themselves then everyone can get it. The RGB series set ain’t reaching the mass market retail. If I’m wrong about this some one let me know? Otherwise this ain’t that great of news. Its 50/50 to me so far.

  10. Roy says:

I wonder if this is supposed to be that big announcement they were going to show off at Comic Con.

  11. Matthew says:

I thought Tme Life only produced compilation CDs. I didn’t know they produced DVDs as well. I hope they make make a real effort with this set (if indeed they do make it). If and when it’s confirmed I will email them with information relating to the material which is out there which they should add as extras.

  12. Tristan Van Pelt says:

If it’s from Time Life, does that mean it will not be availible in DVD stores?

  13. Steven says:

Is this the promised big ComicCon announcement? Or is there just one more thing???

  14. castewar says:

If they do as they have done with other DVD sets, like the complete Man From U.N.C.L.E. series, it will be available in stores, as well as online, with the possibility of a super collector’s set.

That’s a 41 disc set, with two bonus disks, and additional books, at $260 a pop.

Fans complained that they didn’t want the 3 disc, selected episodes, they wanted the whole set (which, remember, is a lot of episodes – a lot.) Well, now it looks like we’re getting it. Time to start saving for Fall.

  15. hannibalking says:

Hopefully someone will release the complete Extreme Ghostbusters series sometime. Sure its not as good as RGB in many ways, but I enjoyed it.

  16. Clark says:

Hope they include the toy commercials too. I’m sure I remember one that featured Janine and Slimer that I’d love to see again.

  17. Great freakin´ news… I hope those come true soon this year.
But, as Castewar posted, a 41 discs set was $260… a 26 discs one will be… $150? Damn, that´s a lot of money… I know it worths every cent… but, c´mon!! there will be a GB videogame, my wedding, my honey moon, the GoW2 game… I´ll be broken for the fall of the year.

  18. castewar says:

They did sell the UNCLE seasons separately, as well as the extras discs, but they tend to work backwards – the biggest and bestest comes first, and you get to buy online months before it hits stores. That’s not to say they’ll use the same model here, but Time-Life is a company built on selling premium items to a smaller number of buyers, rather than releasing less expensive discs everywhere.

We don’t know that the full set will cost $150, that’s just supposition, but it’s not completely outrageous for a super set, and only mildly expensive for a series set that large, period.

We shouldn’t go nuts speculating yet, really (though it was kind of fun.) Time will tell.

  19. dk2 says:

It’ll probably cost the same as the Complete Get Smart series from Time Life. That was a 5 yr series and it states it was a 25 disc set. Since RGB is 26 discs I expect it to be close to that price around $200. Very high price.

  20. this post is quoted by Yes, have some. : protoncharging.com says:

[...] Real Ghostbusters series on DVD Time-Life, makers of some very sweet DVD sets for Get Smart and Man From U.N.C.L.E., will be apparently making a 26 disc set of the entire Real Ghostbusters and Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters series. Without a doubt, this plan would include some equally excellent extras materials, but hold onto your hat – no DVD mega set, and certainly not any of the Time-Life sets, come cheap. Best see if you can get at least $150 squirreled away. [...]
