Extreme Ghostbusters on DVD?

Man, you’d think I don’t read German or something. I totally missed this when Rene sent in news about the first season of Real Ghostbusters going to DVD in Germany (apparently separate from the Time-Life edition just officially announced today.)

There is a second set listed on German online retailers, which I misunderstood (even though Rene was very clear on it) for… hold onto your hat… Extreme Ghostbusters.

Which begs the question – if Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing the entire Extreme Ghostbusters onto DVD in Germany, will it also make its way back to North America? Or at least the UK (any English speaking port in a storm, I say. Region free players are cheap!)

Big thanks to Rene and to Andreas – sorry for being so thick, guys.

  1. Sid says:

Extreme Ghostbusters, to me, was the real-life version of that Simpsons episode where Poochy gets added to Itchy & Scratchy. Poochy Ghostbusters.

    THE SCENE: NETWORK HQ

Suit 1: “And… we’ll have a disabled guy! And a girl! It’ll be so diverse and inclusive and pro-active! And we’ll call it RADICAL GHOSTBUSTERS!”
Suit 2: “It’s ‘Extreme’ now, Sam. ‘Radical’ was the word in the 80s.”
Suit 1: “Fine, EXTREME GHOSTBUSTERS! Someone get recording the new theme song and designing the new logo! And make sure all the characters look edgy and radic- I mean, extreme! Huh, and I guess we’ll need a couple scripts, too, grab some hack out of the basement. I WANT THAT LOGO ON MY DESK BY TOMORROW!”

“Updating” a show is more difficult than it sounds and for how it was done, I actually loved the Extreme Ghostbusters show.

  3. Matt aka clortho says:

EGB is Ghostbusters. I loved it.

If this is true, so long as there’s English audio I’m there. If this comes stateside again, I’ll crap my pants.

I don’t know how I’m going to be able to afford all of this shit this fall.

Oh, and with it being “Season 1.1″.. I’m guessing that’s not a “The Complete Series” deal even though were only 40 episodes.. still this is excellent. Would Back in the Saddle be in this first “wave”? I’m not sure where in the season it aired..

  5. Ben King says:

It’d be great if us Brits were to get a showering of both sets in a UK release…

But between having a region free DVD player and Germany being Region 2, if we don’t get a release (and frankly, I don’t see us not getting one), I can always rely on eBay.

But both bits of news are extremely pleasing (no pun intended).

  6. Ryan LeClair says:

Was EGB more popular overseas? Such as Germany? I believe I remember reading somewhere it was.

Would love to see a Region 1 release.

Read my lips Sony… you will have all my money this fall!

  7. René says:

EGB was not at all popular in Germany…
They gave the show a friday-evening screening on a popular channel (together with MIB) but they canceled borh shows after 5 or 6 episodes…
After that they were aired several times in the morning-cartoons…

I do not regret this… The german dubbing was very poor in quality (as RGB had a very terrific german dubbing!), and in my opinion so was the show… For me it didn’t felt like Ghostbusters at all!

Hope you guys in the USA will get the same EGB-DVD-Set though!
Thanks to Castewar for the credits!
    Greetings from oversea
    René

[...] – an Australian listing for a Sony Pictures release of Extreme Ghostbusters on DVD. Add that to what we’ve heard, this is very encouraging! But still, we’re without hard facts. Stay [...]
