Atari releases new box art to retailers

Starting today, online retailers such as Amazon and Gamestop are showing new art for the various Ghostbuster video games – gone is the “enhanced” logo on black, replaced with the logo, with the guys in front (the style depends on the version – Xbox has the photoreal and the Wii has the stylized, for example), and a halo of green boss monsters in the background.
Not all retailers have replaced all listings with the new art. Gamestop doesn’t have the new art for the PS2 box, while Amazon only has the new PS2 art. Combine all that together and one assumes that all versions get the new art.

NOTE TO COMMENTERS!
I’ve said before that people are welcome to post links directly related to a post are welcome to include them in the comments, but with links for new stories please do not post them in comments, but to email them to me – castewar [at] gmail [dot] com – if you’re not sure if a link is related or not, email it to me. I get to my emails more often than I get to read the comments, so it’s the fastest, surest way to get links and info to me. Sorry Ares – I appreciate the link, but putting it in a comment of an earlier post doesn’t help me.

Very nice… Although, I still don’t get why the ‘no-ghost’ logo is rotated to the right slightly…

  2. Ares says:

Thanks. Will make a note for future reference…

  3. Superstarseven says:

No Ghosts logo slightly angled to the right?
That’s one hell of a nitpick and not noticeable unless you declare Ghostbusters to be your whole life and nothing else.

  4. I was just going to make mention of this in a new post I’m working on. Again, Chris, you beat me to the punch :-)

I know that the plain “logo on black” is classic, but I’m really digging this design. A lot of time, effort, and money went into getting the likeness rights and designing the likenesses for the PS2/Wii, so I’m glad that they’re showing it off on the box covers.

And let’s face it, this design is more exciting than just the logo by itself. (Now the “screw you, I like the classic logo on black” comments come flooding in.)

This also explains where the design for the GameStop t-shirt came from.

Now I’m just waiting for Atari to add the Rule #3 trailer, and high quality copies of the new screen shots and the new box art to their press site.

  5. CORRECTION
Amazon now has it for all releases, except for the DS.

GameStop has it for all releases, except for the PS2 (as already noted).

  6. castewar says:

Man, they must have literally been updating them as I was posting.

Yes, I have to say I like the covers too. The classic on-black is great, but this isn’t that far removed from the original poster, which mostly features the guys (well, three of them.)

And I understand the choice too – this game has to sell to everyone, not just people who respond to the logo, which is not as big a group as we’d like to think. A lot of people love Ghostbusters, but showing them game art on the cover like that is the difference between them going “I’ll rent it or get it later” and them buying it.

As for the tilt, it’s an on-going study that goes way back. Basically, the logo didn’t have a rigid set of use rules, so it appears all over the place, flipped, tilted, you name it. Somewhere along the line, someone’s art sensibility choose the diagonal no-line to be the focus of the graphic balance, not the horizontal balance of the ghost itself. For me, I prefer the Ghost to be level, but it is, as Soopahstah says, nitpicky.

But put the logo on blue/green goo and watch the world end!

  7. Alex says:

Mustache on Winston (as seen in the old trailers) is gone :P

  8. Steven says:

Uh-oh… BestBuy.com has a purported early review up of the PS3 version of the game, and its not positive:

    Customer Rating: 1.0 / 5

    Absolutely Horrible 03/22/2009
    By Spyd3rSpl4t from Concord, CA

    What’s great about it: Ghostbusters!
What’s not so great: Everything Else…

“I had the terrible misfortune of being able to play this game before release…and it was a complete waste of time. The game mechanics are horrible (“Don’t cross streams!’), the graphics are magnificant…ly bad. There is a lot of (expected) campy humor. DON’T BUY IT! Rent it if you REALLY, REALLY have a Ghostbuster fetish…but if you don’t, don’t waste the $4.”

Would you recommend this product to a friend?: No

  9. castewar says:

Customer ratings before release don’t count. They are, to put it simply, full of crap.

Most times, as the game isn’t even out, they are nothing by hot air with no real hands-on time to back it up.

In this case, the guy got to try, what, a year-old demo with little or no voice acting, for two minutes? I was at GDC and got to try a demo build on the PC, and even it was months and months old. I managed to get five minutes and I wouldn’t claim any expert opinion other than, damn, I want to play more. AND I MAKE GAMES FOR A LIVING! So this guy can step off.

Relax. Guy’s name is Spyd3rSpl4t. To me, that’s code for “14 year old that wanted first post.” No site should allow ratings until the game has been released.

And in my world, the perfect one inside my head (you’re all there too, and we’re all awesome), the ratings system isn’t turned on until 24 hours after release.

In the meantime, we’ve got to deal with bit-waste like that.

  10. NET says:

Best Buy Customer Ratings are of no concern to me, Admiral.

  11. CNCGB, Boyer says:

I agree, this box art appeals to the gamer that won’t say OMG! GHOSTBUSTERS! just when they see the excellently tantilizing no-ghost on black.

Yeah, 14 year old males on the internet tend to be annoying as heck. No offense to anyone here that might be that (is fairly certain everyone here is probably in their 20-40′s). The user review at Best Buy is a joke and no one who actually knows anything about this game will care. We’ve seen the graphics and know it looks magnificiently … good, so there’s something wrong with that guy. Unless all he *claims* he played was the Wii version, and then it’s all up to personal taste because that game has some darn good graphics too – although I admit it doesn’t exist to me compared to the more realistic version, ha ha ha… Buying both though, so don’t think I’m trash talking the Wii game. ;-)

  12. Dennis says:

I just visited the Best Buy website, and gave a little review of my own. ;)

  13. teabelly83 says:

i like this, i wouldnt mind getting hold of a full size ad poster with this cover to frame and hang.

  14. DeReK says:

Who cares if the rating is 1.0/5.0 i think its cool

  15. Torian says:

Now those are the real Ghostbusters game cover. Looks cooler and brand new.

  16. Anthony says:

I dug the Logo on Black but Im on board with this… I totally agree that it needs to have a broader appeal; more of an instant sell for sure. Plus its got a good “Ready to Go” look to it… like Shits On, lets kick some ghost. Its a good weekend kids.

  17. Anthony says:

    ps. Couple things I noticed…

    1. Where’s Winton’s ‘stache?

    2. Is that a stylized Gozer I’m spying on the Wii cover?

    3. This game isn’t out yet because…?

  18. survivor says:

It looks like there are different ghost on the Xbox 360 and Will box art.

  19. EVILVenkman says:

cool winston made the cover. lol but why is he always to the far left or far right side. i dont think i’ve ever seen him in a different position in a group pic

  20. survivor says:

I am getting 3 ghostbusters games.
    (1) Xbox 360
    (2) Wii
    (3) Nintendo DS (for my nephew)

I know its gonna be great!

    Castewar,

    Certainly hoping that you’re right!

I generally agree that customer reviews shouldn’t be enabled until the product is available–usually you get “oooh this sounds exciting” or “ooh this sounds stupid.” This one concerned me in that the reviewer claimed to have played the game–but an anonymous online review isn’t worth a whole lot anyway.

When can we expect the game to go gold (have its code finalized)? If the game is being released on June 16, I’d have to think that the drop-dead date for all code is coming up shortly.

  23. I really love this covers… and I`m glad Winston made the cover…
Now, show me the Collector´s Edition… PLEASE!!! I NEED IT!!!

  24. Randy says:

Collectors Edition?!? What do you think i am Made of Money? Broke as a Joke over here, but will be glad to shell out more for a collector’s edition….. *Love the new Cover*

  25. This is fantastic! Sick!…in the BEST way! Pops alot more and is more of an attention grabber…very nice!

If you go to Amazon…you can view the 360 and PS3 covers up close while also panning each individual detail. The trap Venkman is throwing out at you is great and all the character models look FANTASTIC…especially Winston. Though Egon’s face seems off…like he’s about to crap his pants…lol!

  26. JM says:

Does anyone know how to rip that big image off of amazon? I’ve tried copying it and saving it but all I get is a big white square. Stupid amazon.

  27. Sean says:

    Yay! Winston!

  29. shawnswint04@aol.com says:

this is just like what i said before on the other ghostbusters message board. this game while it maybe satisfying to us the fans. it will also become a target of negativity for num-nut reviewers like that goon from the best buy site. i myself am a fan of ghostbusters. as are the guys who developed this game, and i don’t think they spent 4 years developing this game. just for it to be terrible. i mean this is a game that acts like a 3rd film, and i know that the actual 3rd film wont be seen for another year. so until then we should be grateful that were getting something that makes us feel as though we are part of the story.

  30. shawnswint04@aol.com says:

p.s the new game cover kicks ass.

  31. Torian says:

    I LOVE IT

  32. Dennis says:

They used Ernies likeness from GB 2 for the box art, that’s why he doesn’t have the ‘stache.

  33. Tim says:

Ha nice review on Best Buy Dennis. I think these new box art covers look great.

  34. survivor says:

I hope they take winston’s stach off the game since they are using his looks from ghostbusters 2. I am gald they are using their looks from gb2. That’s how it should be.

  35. Well, i’m late to the party but yup – love the new artwork! Lovely work indeed.
