Dan Aykroyd has been in front of the press a lot the last couple of days and as always is talking about Ghostbusters 3. He remains hopeful that a third film can go into production as early as this Fall. He also says that Sigourney Weaver is on-board. He then spends a lot of time dismissing misconceptions about Bill Murray and another sequel.

“I don’t put not making the third movie on Billy. We can’t do that. I’ve been very busy. Harold’s been busy, Ivan’s been busy. And a third script really didn’t coalesce properly. And Billy, you can’t blame an artist for not wanting to do the same thing again. He did two of them, for God’s sake. Although I’m the biggest cheerleader as the originator of the concept but I’ve never begrudged Billy not doing a third movie. I never said he held it up or that he refused. Hey, listen, he’s an artist. You can’t force somebody into it. I’m sorry he never read my third draft because I thought it was pretty good but, look, now we’re at a point that there’s a story that he can accept and that’s going to work, and I think we’re going to be in production fairly soon. We could be in production by winter

I’ve read the first draft and knew there was a second draft, but I wasn’t aware there was a third out there.

Also, Aykroyd talks about getting some ladies into uniform, Allisa Milano and Eliza “Buffy, Dollhouse” Dushku;

“I think they’re amazing,” he said. “And I’m excited about the whole idea of getting this done.”

Any chance that these Hellbent drafts will see the light of day? I’m curious to know what might have been.

And this revelation is intriguing: “I’m sorry [Bill Murray] never read my third draft because I thought it was pretty good….”

  2. Bannen says:

I’m still stumping for Kristen Wiig…

  3. Neil says:

I love the fact that they are going the grain and tackling a female GB, although if she where young enough to do it, Janine would be the obvious trainee choice.

I also hope they give Janine a trainee if they are going to be expanding the businesss. Would give us some great containment scenes…like Janine teaching how to properly dispose of a trap and on accidentally gets loose :) ..

  4. Nev says:

The amount of times Dan has talked about production of GB3 over the past 20 years aside, this is pretty nice to read.

That being said, I’m not a huge fan of his picks for female leads, (comedy background is priority numero uno!) or the suggestion that the original GB’s only appear for a fleeting moment.

I’m also an advocate that Harold Ramis be FIRST choice to direct over Reitman.

    We’ll see what happens.

  5. ROBOrob77 says:

My vote is for Eliza “Buffy, Dollhouse” Dushku.

  6. Torian says:

I think it will be cool if they have male and female Ghostbusters.

  7. Rodie says:

Castewar – are you sure that “third draft” is referring to a third draft of Ghostbusters III and not a draft of the third film? Granted the wording lends itself to the first one better, but it’s not unheard of to get things like that mixed up.

Also for the record, I’m in total agreement with Bannen for getting Kristen Wiig on board she’s hilarious. I’m actually kind of surprised Aykroyd didn’t mention her as one of his choices as he’s publicly praised her previously.

  8. Steven says:

Five new GBs sounds like a lot… it would be a challenge to develop five new characters properly while still devoting sufficient screentime to the “real” Ghostbusters (plus Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, and Rick Moranis?).

  9. Roger says:

Hello Edgar Wright, I know you’re busy, but would you like to direct some ghostbusters?

A guy can dream, can’t he?

I’m (sorta) sure ramis will do fine.

  10. RedWes says:

I don’t know but for some reason I really like Paul Rudd as a potential new recruit, he just has this comedy style that I think would be great for the third movie.

  11. eddy says:

    Eliza Dushku???? Yes plleeeeeaaasssseeee!

  12. Matthew says:

    A female Ghostbuster :(

I don’t like the sound of this at all.

  13. Matthew says:

I think that Ghostbusters III will be a movie which tries to devote screentime to the original characters in order to please fans while trying to devote screentime in order to focus on a new team and I think it will fail on for trying to do both. I think it’ll be a film with no clear direction, focus or story which will try and do too much but will just end up falling flat on its face and will be extremely disappointing.

  14. Steven says:

    No more Ghostbuster films please.

    Let it be…

  15. Nev says:

Yeah, if they have to have a girl GB, I second Kristin Wiig. But again, don’t cast a female just for the sake of casting a female.

And Eliza Dushku is a TERRIBLE idea.

  16. Matthew says:

    WOMEN ARN’T FUNNY!

Well, not for me anyway. Is that sexist? I don’t care.

  17. Bannen says:

Eliza Dushku could work if she could actually act and be, you know, funny. Just thinking of her trying to fit her lines in with the timing of the original GBs makes my brain sad. Ghostbusters requires more from a cast than just being eye candy.

  18. davide says:

This is still their story: the original Gbs are passing the torch….
We’re going to know the new team better in Gb4 (if 3 will do well enough)

  19. Matthew says:

It’s an all round bad idea. I don’t even like the idea of male recruits never mind female ones.

If Ghostbusters III centres on a group of new recruits it will once again be another Ghostbusters movie which is simply repeats the story of the original. Why? Because Venkman, Spengler and Stanz WERE in effect the new recruits in the original movie! We’ve already followed the story of a group of oddball characters experiencing Ghostbusting for the first time!! It’s been done!

I say let’s catch up with those beloved characters and follow them and them alone on one final Ghostbusting adventure!

I don’t care what anyone says, that is THE best way to do this.

  20. Logo Lou says:

I’m not sure why more unused script drafts don’t get put out, “officially” that is. The company owns it. They paid for it. They can still use any element they would really want to in a new drafts/future products. Fans would buy it. There were multiple drafts, many varying wildly, for Alien 3, they talked about them on the DVD box set, and many can be found online, yet the company never just said, “Hey, there’s a market for this, let slap a binding on this and make some $$$.”

  21. Alex says:

I can´t think of a case where “old guard passes the torch to a new generation” type of story has worked… in fact, right now all I can think of is Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The more we are getting closer to GB3 becoming a reality, the less I´m fond of the idea.

  22. Alex G says:

I’m really not enthused about this at all, in fact I’m almost dreading what’s going to come out of the new film… I think its going to be completely “PC” and too wholesome, with females as equals to their male counterparts in the Ghostbusters team and I don’t feel that the “senior” Ghostbusters should get less screen time. I don’t understand why everyone involved with the writing of the movie seem to think that the older guys simply “cannot” be seen to be pulling on the jumpsuits again – that would be funny in itself would it not? And we ARE trying to make a comedy here, right? Apparently not. I just dont think this is going to be anywhere near as good as even GB2 and I think its going to be like one of those “American Bandcamp” movies that end up in the bargain bin at Target for $2.99.

  23. Mr. No-Ghost says:

    You guys are harsh. Haha!

Its a continuing story or “real” guys fighting the unreal. We see their lives as spectators. Just think of the franchise as if its a TV serial or a book series. The Ghostbusters have to evolve the company and pass the torch. They can’t bust ghosts forever, no matter how much we’d like to see them do so.

I’m looking forward to the movie. Even at its worst, Ghostbusters is still far and wide a better built property (with competent and very funny creators) than 9/10′s of what is made today.

  24. Patrick says:

I’m very excited about Ghostbusters 3! Dan said that Production will began in the Fall of 2009. If it begans in the Winter that’s Wonderful because it’s going to happen either way. Finally we GB Fans will get a Ghostbusters 3 because GB3 is moving forward. GB3 won’t be here in 2010 it’s going to be here in 2012. http://www.Imdb.com/title/tt1289401. Harold said that it takes a year to get everything gready before filming and that’s why GB3 will be here in 2012 and filming will began in 2011. I’m also very excited that my #1 Favorite actress Sigourney Weaver will be in Ghostbusters 3. She was awesome in the first two GB Movies and she will be Awesome in the third film. I can’t wait to see Ghostbusters 3 in 2012 because the movie will be awesome to see. I’m sure for a fact that Ray Parker Jr. will sing a new song for the GB3 movie no dought about that. He’s heard about it but he hasn’t been asked well he will be asked when Production begans in the Fall Winter of 2009! I will buy the GB3 soundtrack to!

  25. El_Dudarino says:

Eliza is the one of the worst choices she is not a good actress by any means. But who really gives a shit what we think. Thier gonna make it what ever way they. From everything i’ve heard about it I’m pretty sure the results and gonna be disapointing, and if it sucks oh well, I’m still gonna fuckin’ buy it. I know all you fuckin fan boys will too, got to spend that birthday money from grandma on something.

  26. Maverick says:

Not sure I’m digging what Aykroyd is talking about. The problem is we all have this idea in our heads of what Ghostbusters 3 should be… It’s going to be a Star Wars repeat. Love it, or Hate it.

But you know what, if Aykroyd’s excited about doing it, I’m excited. Let’s see what happens and hope for the best.

  27. Matthew says:

Due to the fact that I have no faith in Hollywood, especially when it comes to making sequels, I am not at all exited about Ghostbusters 3, the only thing I feel is objection, concern and worry to be quite honest.

  28. RedWes says:

Maybe we can get another Ghostbusters in a wheel chair instead of a female!!!!

  29. Bo Holbrook says:

I can’t dig on having broads on the team just for the sake of them being pieces of ass. It’s just silly. Neither of those broads mentioned could keep up to step comedically.

  30. Chris says:

Christ if they HAVE to go down the sequel cliche’ rule book and put a woman in it then yes Kristin Wiig is a very good choice and Eliza Dushku is a pathetic choice that only lonely, dateless nerds would think up. Sorry if that’s harsh but this is a comedy where talking about, we want funny women and not eye candy from some stupid show about vampire slayers.

The other thing they COULD do is just leave the movie thing alone and concentrate on making more sequels in game form, it’s the only way to do GB sequels the way they should be done: starring OUR Ghostbusters the way we remember them damn it!!

  31. davide says:

    http://news-briefs.ew.com/2009/05/ghostbusters.html

Sony putting down Aykroyd’s enthusiasm! :-)

  32. Nick says:

If the original Ghostbusters was shot the way Aykroyd initially wanted, this website probably wouldn’t exist. It took Ramis and Reitman to hone his ideas into specific areas, improv to get the scenes right (Christ, if the movie had been the same as the shooting script, this website might not exist), so many variables and revisions…

Then you hear something like Dushku and it’s like, Jesus. Where the heck is Aykroyd coming from? I totally agree that this is heading into Star Wars/Indiana Jones territory, and it’s sad. If you think about it, it’s something about getting older and losing touch; you have the SW & IJ atrocities, and then you have the greatness of the latest Star Trek, which, whether your dug it or not, felt fresh and alive. And yes, I’m of the group that would prefer there never be a third movie.

  33. Bo Holbrook says:

    Sarah Silverman FTW

  34. [...] about his favorite topics, he talked a bit more about GB3 as he sees it, which expands on his earlier revelation about having a female leader for the next generation of busters. He also speaks more about the new [...]

  35. SJCK1 says:

Having more than one female or all female Ghostbusters to pass down the torch would destroy the Ghostbusters Franchise. That’s like making the next franchise of Charles Angles or Sex in the City all men. With all the feminizing going on in entertainment today, this would just add to the torture. I’m having a hard time accepting new male Ghostbusters. I wish they would all just strap up one more time. Them being too old is just ageism! If they do past the torch to the next generation, I would suggest only having one female Ghostbuster.

I can see why Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis would want to add female Ghostbusters today. Dan Aykroyd has raised three daughters, Harold Ramis’ wife is a feminist and he has a daughter. Research shows that men with daughters are widely opened to feminism, Which is not bad, but some men over sympathize with it to the point they become extremist, losing a heavy amount of their own masculinity.

This movie would be a disaster.
