It ain’t over – Sony solicits license partners at European Licensing Expo
While 2009, the 25th anniversary year of Ghostbusters, is almost over, Sony isn’t planning on dropping the franchise any time soon – appearing at this week’s Brand Licensing Expo in London.
Sony Pictures Consumer Products is a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment. SPCP generates and extends the branding potential of an individual film, film franchise or television series through the development of licensed merchandise and retail promotion. It leverages opportunities worldwide
that include, but are not limited to, toys, video games, publishing, apparel, electronics and collectibles. A selection of properties for which it seeks licensees and/or retail partners includes Ghostbusters, The Karate Kid, The Green Hornet, and Spider-Man 4 (retail only).
Sadly, the franchise is being listed broadly as “Ghostbusters”, with no hints of “Ghostbusters 3”, though some have jumped to that conclusion. It’s not an insane thought – it’s to Sony’s benefit to cultivate relationships now, regardless of whether there is an official go-ahead on a third film. If nothing comes of it, they can still make Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 merch, and if something does come of it, they’re ready to go.
Hopefully we’ll see something more concrete at next June’s Licensing Expo in Las Vegas.
