Aykroyd rephrases Murray, says new team will be unknowns

Dan Aykroyd spoke briefly this week to NY Magazine and expounded on Murray’s comment that he liked some of the new script, but not all of the script, saying “This one? No [Murray hasn't been critical of it]. He likes it.”

Aykroyd also reaffirmed the plan to extend the franchise past the original team by introducing a new team, a mix of male and female, but he put some new emphasis on picking unknowns (something that would work better should the actors be called for more than one movie, as well as help manage the budget of a film that has to pay a lot of big names just to get started.)

Thanks to Nevil for the heads up!

Can I be one of the unknowns?!

  2. Chad Paulson says:

    Positive mood slime’s aflowin’!

  3. Tod says:

I really think the longer they drag this out the less likely Murray is going to do it. Hopefully Aykroyd is wrong here, I doubt Murray will like hearing that Aykroyd is now speaking for him. Ghostbusters 3 is a bad idea.

  4. matthew says:

A Ghostbusters film with a new team will not work.

You can quote me on this.

  5. What if the new team were clones of Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis and had the same characters that they played in GHOSTBUSTERS & GHOSTBUSTERS II? Not likely gonna happen, but since they’re unknowns, how the heck can you be so sure that the film, though different in many ways, won’t be just as funny or more so than the original? Or at least just as inventive, if not more so, perhaps working more on a sci-fi level, with a good dose of humor thrown in…it’s definitely not gonna be the same movie. It’s gonna expand on the GHOSTBUSTERS concept(s). At least I would hope…plotwise, apparently, it will follow the same STRUCTURE as the first one, but the specific elements will hopefully make it intriguing. As far as originality goes, you can’t get that in a sequel. You can do some interesting things, things that are compelling, but the overall idea isn’t going to be original. Like everybody says, don’t we just wanna see the guys put the packs on one more time? Who says it has to be the EXACT SAME PEOPLE? Bill, Dan and Harold et al are not the only GHOSTBUSTERS-esque talent out there. SNL had a whole slew of GB-worthy talent back in the day, and if SNL hadn’t fried their brains away with who knows what, they probably still would have some 70′s-ish SNL GB-worthy talent coming to the forefront. I’m not saying SNL is the resource to go, I’m saying that if back in 1975 or 1980… there were so many GB-worthy talents out there, why couldn’t we find some more in the present day?

  6. castewar says:

    Yeah, got it.

Can’t we not derail yet another comment thread into a massive pointless debate, please and thanks?

  7. Not to mention how many SNL/SCTV talents WERE going to be in GB but ended up not being…

  8. Oh, sorry. I kinda like debates, but as you wish…

  9. Nev says:

I’m down with injecting some fresh new comedic talent into the mix. Maybe Aziz Ansari, Eric Wareheim or Patton Oswalt or something. Cheap and funny as all hell.

  10. If I may dare join the cry-baby bandwagon (that bogs on every GB3 news or rumor item)…I only have one concern. Now, I’m in no way sexest. But I just can’t see a female or females as GB’s workin. They’d better be very funny. I hope they don’t stoop to having a silly romance sub-plot between a male and female GB…*ick*. Though I could be proven wrong, if done right….I like to be proven wrong. I like to give things a chance. Which seems to be missing among many of the nay-saying fans. You know another film that worked with a new “recruit”? The first MiB. Yep…Tommy Lee Jones guided Will Smith in the film as the newest MiB recruit and Smith had replaced Jones by the end of the film. And guess what? It was very funny… What people seem to forget is (for this film, at least)…I’m sure all the main characters will be present the entire film while adding some young, fresh blood. Stop worrying….. And if you still disagree, then ignore it as part of the official cannon. But don’t ruin it for the rest of the fans.

  11. Ivan says:

Ryan, I’m confident they can find brilliant female comedians who would be perfect as Ghostbusters… right off the top of my head, I see names like Kristen Wiig, Tina Fey, or Sarah Silverman.

  12. Makuta says:

as much as i want to see the Ghostbusters franchise grow, i want the main story follow the original Ghostbusters maybe with rookies being heavily involved.
following the 1st rule of the Ghostbusting “never go solo” they can always have a rookie with them ,the 4th movie can follow rookies more.

  13. Seriously? says:

I guess I just don’t understand the point of all this, “Ramis mentions new possible GB3 fact,” “Murray vaguely responds to further GB3 questioning,” “Akroyd clarifies previously reported statement made by fellow ‘Ghostbusters’ cast members,” “Hudson confirms GB3 team mascot!”

I have an idea for an announcement – “Ghostbusters 3 officially slated to start production in 2010,” or “After a long struggle to keep the franchise alive, classic comedy hit ‘Ghostbusters’ throws in the towel after 1989 sequel.”

  14. Ivan>>> Thanks for the positive input! But even with those names in the mix, I still can’t view them as acceptable GB’s. But like I said, would love to be proven wrong. Peace! :-)

  15. ghost_jedi says:

i can actually see sarah silverman working as a GB, maybe as an Egon-esque geek character, while also being very funny. at the minute tho, im not holding my breath on GB3 considering all the conflicting reports we’ve had lately. why not give GB1 and 2 a cinema re-release and see exactly how big the demand for GB3 is? i know id go to see them, and so would my 4yo son who’s loved ghostbusters ever since he 1st saw it aged 2!

  16. castewar says:

    Seriously.

    1) This is a Ghostbusters website. Of COURSE there’s going to be a lot of production navel gazing.

    2) This is AFTER I leave more than half these types of things off the site – the idea is that the item add even a little something to the overall picture. In this case, Dan contradicting/altering Bill’s comment, and the affirmation that the new cast would not be more big name stars.

Dan Ayrkoyd and his dad were all over the place this past week, which his dad’s new book. Everybody asked about GB3 – how many of them did I post here?

    Exactly.

Does that make some sense to you?

  17. matthew says:

    No female Ghostbusters! Terrible idea.

  18. Chris M says:

What’s wrong with female ghostbusters? don’t you wanna see a cute girl decked out in full GB gear? I do. :)

  19. joe says:

i dont see whats wrong with new recruits, in the game you play as a rookie and you dont even have a speaking part, but the game is still really good and funny and everything you want from ghostbusters. now if there were 3 or 4 rookies joining the team and they do have speaking parts, surely it will be just as good if not better. I mean it wont be like EGB where the ghostbusters are replaced completely and even EGB wasnt that bad, so the way i see it is there is nothing to worry about, GB2 wasnt as good as the original but everyone still loves it, if GB3 isnt as good as the others it will most likely still be better than most other films that come out alongside it.

  20. raystantz italy says:

    @ castewar…

maybe you posted THIS because is the clearest answer ( with a little bit of news) that Dan gave to all these interviews? sorry for my bad english…

  21. DJB says:

I have no qualm with a female GB. I don’t even have a problem with Rookiee ghostbusters. I think they should actually be a team of newbies who have to get help from the Legendary Real GB- I mean have you seen these guys lately? Sorry, but they’re outta shape. I love them all but they are…
Get some comedic talent from the SNL or Human Giant cast.
    Or…somewhere else.

    I dunno.

  22. Mike N says:

I would hate seeing sara silverman as a ghostbuster . Aykroyd said no big names and she is.I dont like the idea of a girl ghostbuster, sounds like extreme ghostbusters to me if they do that. I think 2 rookies would be good, mix them up with some of the guys during scenes in the movie. the original cast doesnt have to be in every scene. i think its a good idea using nonames, could find a dimond in the rough.dont want big name younger actors overshadowing the original guys. GB3 im pumped!!

  23. Seriously? says:

    Caste.

    1. My comment has absolutely nothing to do with you updating your precious Ghostbusters website. Update away. I don’t care if you want to post leaked pictures of each of the old cast members wearing some sort of Ghostbusters related merch. It is, after all, your site.

    2. I was addressing the fact that the little games that are being played with dropping this hint, starting this rumor, clarifying this previous statement, etc and forth, are simply getting old.

Didn’t say you make “the news.” Didn’t say I had a problem with you posting “the news.” Like everyone else, I posted my opinion on “the news.” I thought that was the point of being able to add comments to these breaking articles.

From now on I’ll stick to the same thing everyone else argues about- “I don’t think a new movie is worthwhile.” or “They are so going to make it, because a new game came out, then toys, and it can’t be coincidental.”

  24. EctoGlow says:

I hate it when people cant just be happy with what they get and be open minded.

  25. Matthew says:

No I don’t Chris M. I don’t find women funny. Least of all cute girls. Attractive yes. Funny no. I think it’s an awful idea.

I think one more film would be nice but I want to see Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson not a new bunch new replacements.

    I don’t think this’ll work at all.

  26. Vinz says:

Ohh Matthew, what a dark and lonely world you must live in…

  27. Drake says:

He lives in a world called reality. You’ll see when the movie comes out and bombs. Two women plus two guys seems like they are trying to attract crowds, or write in an easy romantic plot. not like comedy. I also don’t think women are that funny. Catherine Ohara or stephanie wier are funny at times, but young chicks? Nah they’re just concerned about looking hot. And you know they will cast hot chicks anyway, not funny ones.

But one thing I’d like to comment on here is kind of a big detail which has been missed. Dan Aykroyd says, there will “PROBABLY” be two guys and two girls. What the hell is probably? He has the script, its written. Wouldn’t he know for certain if there were two guys and two girls. Or at least said, we’re rewriting it for two guys/girls, or the current version has 2 and 2. I don’t understand the probably if he has read the script. I really don’t think Murray is in the loop at all.

I also agree with Seriously a lot. I’m grateful for the updates on the websites part, but am sick of the cast members and people involved saying the same old stuff. In two years Aykroyd will still be saying, “Got the script, like script, waiting for the production number.”

  28. Matthew says:

What do you you mean Vinz?

  29. castewar says:

Seriously, I’ll take that at face value, that you were just commenting on the endless stream of soundbites in general, not here, but can you see how your comment can be seen as a criticism of them being posted here? Mind you, that you come back by condescending about my “precious Ghostbusters website” and lecturing me about what a comment system is for doesn’t help, mind you. Yeah, it is my precious site – I work hard at it, ad free (meaning, revenue free), so I’m fiercely protective of it. Sorry if you feel trampled, but I’ll stand up for my site and myself any day. Hope you can understand that, and let’s move on…

    Seriously, Drake, et al

The number one reason we’re so inundated with these sound bites is nobody’s fault, not even Aykroyd, the number one generator of them. These are happening because a) this is, relative to the last 20 years, the closest a third movie has ever been, and as a result b) the press has been more interested than it ever has, which means that they are asking about it more, which means that they are replying more, which means we see more of these comments because c) we’re fans, and we’re looking for all the news of the movie – the rest of the world maybe sees Dan with Al Roker, or reads one article somewhere. They’re not seeing all of them. If Dan and anybody else wants everyone interested, then they have to have the movie talked about everywhere, in order to reach as many people as possible – this in turns means a deluge of duplicate, redundant news items to us.

It’s a pain (try being the guy that has to politely tell a couple dozen people that you appreciate that they sent you a link, but no, you won’t be running it), but we asked for it.

    Finally, everyone…

What part of I didn’t want the comments to turn into another opportunity for people to reiterate their opinions on the pros and cons of a third movie (and in particular, I didn’t want the back and forth arguments to start again) was hard to understand?

If anybody wants to have a debate, please avail yourself of the many fine Ghostbusters messageboards, which are designed specifically for that sort of thing.

Thanks, and don’t eat to much candy tonight.

  30. Chris Martin says:

I have faith. Rookie joins them and starts his own thing in LA. MAYBE NY, but another city would also work.
I have no problem with females either.
You only need 4 types to work, just like the A Team.
Muscle, mouth, smarts and either tech or looks.
With the same writing team, I can see them pulling it off. It may not be great like the first one, but that’s pretty hard to top.
As long as they keep the “feel” which was basically blue collar workers in extraordinary situations.
By the way, I’m free to start filming at any time. call me.

  31. Dan Evans says:

I thought you just weren’t going to allow comments for GB3 articles, Castewar?

  32. castewar says:

    Hot damn, you’re right, Dan.
    I completely forgot.
    Well then…
