First hint of IDW's Summer one-shot!

From the “IDW is doing a bang-up job” department, we’ve gotten our first, unofficial, word that IDW is lining up “CON-volution”, a Summer one-shot by artist Joshua “Dead@17″ Howard. No writer as yet.

Is Comic Con a holiday? Yes. Yes it is. Which is, I’m assuming, the gist of the comic – the Ghostbusters, a fan convention of some sort, etc. And what better time to release it then during the Summer con months? Here’s hoping there’s a CON-exclusive cover!

This is as good a time as any to gently remind you all that a lot of this stuff pops up much earlier on Twitter, if you’re so inclined to follow Proton Charging there.

I hope this is available at San Diego.

  2. Ben King says:

Could be interesting, both in story and in art style, based on Howard’s blog.

Looking forward to it, although it’s a shame that there’ll be a 3+ month gap between this new one-shot, and Tainted Love.

I hope the series has some more four-issue arcs in the not-too-distant-future.

I thought we were gonna get an on-going soon.

  4. From the “IDW is doing a bang-up job” department

    I wouldn’t exactly say that they’re doing a “bang-up job”.

The “Displaced Aggression” story wasn’t that good. It was rushed and had a nonsensical soap opera-style plot twist at the end involving Rachel’s family that made me groan out loud. The “Past Present Future” story was even worse. The RGB ep “X-Mas Marks The Spot” covered the same territory SO much better.

I’m not looking forward to any of their future comics, but especially the “holiday” one-shots if they consider Comic Con a holiday. Though I guess it could be worse. They could be putting out a holiday comic EVERY month, which would mean a lot of dreck out on the shelves due to quantity over quality.

    Here’s hoping there’s a CON-exclusive cover!

Here’s hoping there’s not. As a collector, I’m getting a little sick and tired of IDW raping our wallets. All of their Retailer Incentive variant covers for “Displaced Aggression” didn’t even feature new artwork! They were all the same artwork as Cover B, but with the titling removed (issue #3 had the color removed instead).

I’m actually unsure if I should bother collecting “Tainted Love”, which is currently set to have two covers, but knowing how much IDW cares only about their bottom line, will probably have a third RI cover when it drops next month.

I can official say, that as far as variant covers are concerned, IDW is now as bad as 88MPH. No company should want to be put into the same boat as 88MPH. So if anyone from IDW is out there, I heed you to stop with all these damn variant covers and care more about the stories. If necessary, remove some of those ads in the back of the books to allow more pages for the stories, if they need it.

    1) Completing 2 mini-series and well on the way to completing one-shots IS a bang-up job, relatively speaking. You issues with the issues is subjective – someone must have liked them. They got bought.

    2) You can’t be a collector and then complain that there’s TOO much to collect. I see your point – it’s a lot of money. But that’s your decision to be a completist. Some of us don’t have the same problem with the variety of variants. Plus, if there’s one cover you shouldn’t begrudge a comic company, it’s the one the make for conventions.

  6. Bryan says:

Sadly I see both points of view and am somewhat conflicted. I sure did like the 88MPH comic ( I’d give it a 6/10 ) but that’s just judging the comic, not how things were “managed” if you can call the aftermath of that ordeal, management. I’m hoping IDW does better and definitely agree what’s come out so far is at the very least, better managed.

Although me and my guys all have tickets for Con, so many people in my group of friends have stated they don’t want to deal with the crowds in there anymore. A lot of or other Con friends just went bar-hopping and extended the party into the streets around Con. I’m thinking that’s where the real action of 2010 will be. You heard it here first, folks.

I’m living vicariously this year through those of you who actually set foot in there. As for me, look for me at the Sci-Fi channel bar ( in Hard Rock Hotel ) across the street from Con this year.

  7. Vinz says:

Collectors rape their own damned wallets. Too many covers for you? Did you ever think of just buying *one*?

You accuse IDW of putting their bottom line above the story, while also complaining that you feel pressured to buy the same story multiple times, packaged in a few slightly different ways. Doesn’t sound like the story itself is much of a concern to you either.

  8. You make some good points, Chris.

However, doing alternate covers is a trick to keep sales high, but for something like a Ghostbusters comic it seems like a cheap stunt. A Ghostbusters comic should sell on its own merits!

Since IDW didn’t really do any alternate covers for The Other Side – one store exclusive doesn’t really count in my book as additional sales are limited to just that one store – could their overabundance of covers for Displaced Aggression and the following one-shots mean that sales are not as good as expected? That they’re pumping out all of these unnecessary – and in the case of the untitled and uncolored variants – cheap covers just to offset poor sales?

  9. Jim Beard says:

Hi, all. Jim Beard here, one half of the writing team of CON-VOLUTION.

The holiday in question here is 4th of July, sometimes known as Independence Day (or for our friends across the Pond, “that little 1776 uprising”). Rest assured that suitable nods to said holiday are made.

Plus, yeah, Keith Dallas and I consider Comic-Con a holiday, regardless ;)

Hope you will take a look when its out or order in advance – we’re dead excited about it and thrilled to pieces that Josh Howard is illustrating it. Gives the book a ghost of a chance, you might say.

Thanks for all the chatter about the book!

    Jim!

  10. Jim Beard says:

Btw, IIRC, there’s only two covers and they come in a 1:1 ratio at the comic shops. They’re both AMAZING.

And as the plan stands now, both Keith and I will be at SDCC signing copies and would love to meet and and all ‘Busters fans.

    Jim
