Jason K, at the GBFans messageboard, posted these two videos of a fan talking to Ghostbusters 1 & 2 producer, Michael C Gross, outside Mattel’s booth at the San Diego Comic Con, next to the restored Ecto-1. A real and genuinely interesting rarity to get to hear Mr. Gross talk about the films he helped shepherd into being.

Videos are hard to hear at times. I can hear clearly the chick saying”please don’t touch the car” after some guy is seen touching ecto.
It’s really cool to see him mingling with and talking to fans like that. Class act.
[...] to Proton Charging for posting [...]
I think he’s on something. Either drunk or coke based on the rubbing of his nose and twitches. Or he’s just tired. What did he say about Dan Ackroyd I couldn’t hear? Would have loved for this guy to ask him what’s up with GB2 deleted scenes and the chances of them seeing the light of day. Why doesn’t anyone ever ask about that? That’d be my first question..but that’s just me. I’d ask about cut scenes and why Elmer Bernstein didn’t do the music(details about Ivan and Elmers rumoured “feud”). Common GB fans let’s start getting pissed about the lack of GB2 love when it comes to blu-ray or extended directors cuts, whatever. We need to demand to know why we haven’t seen so many cut scenes when the lamest movies imaginable get special feature after special feature. Uggh
@Nathan: He said that (paraphrasing) ‘Danny would be happy to do it either way, not meaning that in a bad way’ in regards to not wanting to put out a bad GB3.
As for the GB2 DVD stuff, he really isn’t the guy to talk to about that.
@Cody I could make that part out but he says something regarding who “really” controls GB when he struggles to name hardold ramis and reitman. Your probably right about him not being the right person to ask but he may be able to shed some light on why things were cut, if the scenes still exist why slimer was cut out of all home video released at the end before the credits. Or maybe he could shed some light on the reshoots happening so close to the release date. All these interviews with these guys are always the same questions “what are some stories from filming”, “what was it like working with *insert name here*”, “did you guys know you had a hit”. And it must be boring for them having to answer the same questions over and over again for the last 26 years. And if he’s not the right person to ask perhaps he can direct us to someone who’s in the know. God I wish I could get just 5 minutes worth of question with someone involved and I can’t wait for the cleaning up the town documentary, speaking of which does anyone know when that’s being released?
Yeah, I was trying to make out what he said too. “–Because Danny who’s the one who originated it, Danny (inaudible). I mean that in the nicest way.”
It’s a shame Joe’s out of the business now. I wish all the people involved with the original film could somehow be brought on as consultants at least. I think it would elevate GB3 to that heightened sense of reality that came to define the franchise. Everyone from writers, to make-up artists, music techs, original Boss Studios personnel, etc. They’d have to pull some folks out of retirement (those who are still living anyway), but it would ultimately pay off.
In my opinion, I think GB1 & GB2 got it right. GB2 to a slightly lesser degree because of the kid-friendly aura that had encompassed the RGB show at that point, but timing is definitely everything. Now we’re in a very cynical, Reality TV-centric age where moviegoers have this “been there, seen that” mentality. Audiences are nitpicky & tech-savvy; thinking they know the in-and-outs of how things should operate. It’s going to be much harder to impress people & in trying to find that niche, I think they’re going to go all gimmicky with the third movie. (i.e. GB3-D)
When those first two films were introduced–particularly GB1–no one had ever seen a movie that layered so many varying elements (comedy, horror, sci-fi, etc.) & then have it executed as this huge summer blockbuster was just mind-blowing.
Everyone needs a remedial course in GB fundamentals & who would know better than the folks behind the magic the original? If they try to take GB3 too much into one particular direction, it’ll fail. It’s a balancing act of the highest degree that I think those who worked on GB1, the first season of the RGB, & GB2 understood. Hell, why wasn’t J. Michael Stracynzski hired as a head writer?! That would’ve been a step in the right direction. Just sayin’.
I said Joe’s out of the business now. I meant Michael. Oops!
Mr Gross if you are reading thank you for all the passion you put into your projects. I grew up with Ghostbusters, The Real Ghostbusters and Heavy Metal. It is cool you still talk to fans and read the sites. I wish you all the best.
@Nathan Mr. Gross has been away from the source materials for 20 years or so. Plus there are numerous reasons he could have been rubbing his eyes or nose. It isn’t cool to assume he is on drugs. Show the man some respect. He has helped create some of the greatest movies and cartoons from my youth.
Why isn’t it cool to assume he’s on drugs? I also said he could be tired. I don’t care if he does drugs. All the power to him that doesn’t make him a bad person. What he does is his business but i can speculate all i wish because clearly he isn’t fully coherent. Does that mean he’s so wasted he can barely talk? No. Not even close but he rubs his nose often and has numerous other body tweaks and gestures and tics that *can* be common with narcotics like cocaine. Or..he could have had a long day and be tired hence him forgetting Harold Ramis.
Nathan-I don’t know who you are, but you need to learn respect.
SonofSamhain-Yeah it is going to be hard to make a third movie without coming off almost like a reboot. The first two films were made by basically the same cast and art direction. The third if made, will be done by mostly new people. Sure the actors may be the same, but with the threat CGI to make it realistic (and boring) it is going to be a battle to make the new movie fit with the other two. God tho, I’d do anything to see J. Michael Stracynzski be a part of 3 or anything related to the ghostbusters franchise.
