IDW officially announces monthly Ghostbusters! New variant covers!

While we’ve known about the September start of IDW’s monthly Ghostbusters comic for awhile now, it hasn’t been officially officially announced. That official announcement went out today, and besides some hard details ($3.99, 32 pages each issue), we also find out some info about covers other than the two we already know about. One glow-in-the-dark, and what sounds like a special retailer sketch cover.

San Diego, CA (June 24, 2011) — IDW Publishing and Sony Pictures Consumer Products are thrilled to announce the launch of an all-new, ongoing GHOSTBUSTERS comic book series. Spinning out of IDW’s hit Infestation event, and featuring Ghostbusters: Infestation scribe Erik Burham, the ghost hunters from New York City are back with exciting new adventures starting in September. Helping Burnham bring this zany story of the dead to life will be fan-favorite artist Dan Schoening (Ghostbusters: What in Samhain Just Happened?!) and popular IDW Ghostbusters cover artist Nick Runge.

“ My dream since I took over the editorial duties on IDW’ s Ghostbusters comics license was to bring the boys in proton packs to monthly comics,” said series editor Tom Waltz. “ We’ ve had fantastic Ghostbusters one-shots and mini-series up to this point, but the incredible success of Ghostbusters: Infestation has proven that Ghostbusters fans, old and new alike, are still very hungry for ghostbusting tales. With the awesome creative team we’ve gathered to make it happen, the best is yet to come!”

In this ongoing series, psychokinetic energy is on the rise again, and business is booming for the boys. Ray is troubled by what could be a prophetic dream—is this an ill omen of an upcoming apocaplypse, or just a little indigestion? These questions and more are raised in the first issue of the all-new GHOSTBUSTERS comic series. In addition, each issue will contain two pages of exclusive behind-the-scenes extras by creator Tristan Jones (Tales of the TMNT.)

IDW will offer special retailer incentive covers, including a “ Who Ya Gonna call” cover by Schoening, and a glow-in-the-dark cover. Furthermore, as part of IDW’ s “ Be a Ghostbuster” promotion, retailers will have the opportunity to obtain a unique variant featuring up to four personalized Ghostbusters on their cover. Fans are encouraged to reach out to their retailers to learn more about these exclusive variant covers.

GHOSTBUSTERS #1 ($3.99, 32 pages, full color) will be available in stores in September 2011. Diamond order code: JUL11 0130

Would Sony dump Columbia?

Ooh, that’s not good – fortunately, it’s speculative.

24/7 Wall Street runs a yearly feature, guessing which brands will die in the coming year. Some at interesting guesses, such as the death of Nokia (even though they are showing some interesting, possibly company reviving tech) and some headscratchers, like the death of Corn Pops (kids aren’t eating sugar cereal anymore… the idiots) fill out the piece, but the one that seems the most reasoned and worrisome is that Sony might unload Columbia-TriStar as a fast way to increase the worth of the company.

This doesn’t mean the death of Ghostbusters or Columbia-TriStar. They would end up belonging to someone else. But by selling Columbia-TriStar, Sony Pictures ceases to be. And if Sony Pictures hasn’t put Ghostbusters 3 into production before that, the greenlight process starts all over.

Ish #2 covers for Ghostbusters monthly! Pre-orders start this week!

Well ghostlads and ghostladies, do you know what this coming week is? It’s the week you can start pre-ordering issue #1 of IDW’s monthly Ghostbusters! You can do it at your local comic shop or one of any number of online comic retailers, such as Graham Cracker Comics.

Why pre-order? Because while customer wisdom is that their purchase of an item dictates its popularity and success, this is not actually the case in comics. The comic shop owners buy the books before you do – the number of copies they buy dictate success or failure of a book. They can’t return them if they buy to many. And while some books can be re-ordered, those are rare. So, the success of Ghostbusters as a monthly comic depends on us pre-ordering the book. These pre-orders help the retailer make his orders. And those orders make or break the book.

So, if you want to give the monthly book a strong start, go pre-order it!

Now, to inspire you, IDW has sent us the two covers for issue #2! Dan Schoening and Luis Antonio Delgado’s cover is simple and clean and awesome. It’s also Winston heavy, so that’s a double win! Nick Runge’s second record cover homage mashes Abby Road with TriBeca and it is fantastic!
