Believe me, I’m cool with what Nick Runge is trying to do here, but at this point can’t he just paint the actors’ likenesses??? I know that originally IDW made it very clear that they were staying away from all of that, but at this point, both Dan’s and Tristan’s (and not to mention GB Infestation artist Kyle Hotz’s) GBs all look like direct characteratures of the actors…

  2. castewar says:

Caricature is the key word – Dan and Tristan are drawing caricatures, whereas Nick’s art is more photo-real. Once you hit that area, it becomes a likeness rights issue, involving playing out more money to the actors, getting actor OKs (right now there’s already a turn around period where Sony has to OK the covers in general – getting Bill Murray to OK his face on a comic cover… that’s a big deal.)

  3. Erik Burnham says:

Trust me, Sony takes this very seriously, and will demand changes on covers that they may not for an interior page.

  4. Spengler's Mom says:

Ok, gotcha… Thanks for taking the time to answer guys! And Eric, great job on the book! I’m really happy that it’s selling out and insuring future issues with you, Dan, Tristan and the rest of the team…

  5. Spengler's Mom says:

*Erik. Sorry (blame my iphone’s autocorrect :-p)

  6. Fritz says:

I have issue 2 already, but want that Egon cover. Him looking so uncharacteristically cocky and badass recalls my favorite Now Comics cover, the one from Vol.1 #4 ( http://www.gbfans.com/real-ghostbusters/comics/vol-1-issue-4/ )

  7. Mrmichaelt says:

Did the Cover B for Issue 5 change or is this Cover B for #6? I remember reading #5 was a Ramones homage (http://ghostbustersnews.com/?p=6257&cpage=1#comment-30839)

  8. Venkman's Dad says:

I mean no disrespect, but I really, really dislike the photo realistic covers… it just looks like a bunch of fans painted in fan gear. I LOVE the Evil Dead nod and of course the cartoony main art. I’m definitely enjoying this series, but until the Evil Dead homage cover, I haven’t wanted to buy any of the photo-real covers.

  9. Spengler's Mom says:

Another question that I have… Does Caddilac ever get involved when Using the Ecto-1??? I’ve always wondered about that…

  10. Tristan Jones says:

Venkman’s Dad: Cheers man… Hopefully I can do more cult/80′s/horror film homages in the future. It’s up to the bosses though. Right now, I’m knee deep in Ninja Turtles.

@Spengler’s Mom: Yes. This is why we never actually use the Caddy. General Motors, I think it might be…

  11. Spengler's Mom says:

Woah Woah Woah!!! Hey Erik, just nabbed issue 3, reading it and loving it, and Egon mentions something about their “former associate” and his experimental pack shorting out in Vegas… Is this a hint teasing the new video game??????? I had always thought that a sequel with the rookie starting a new franchise in another city would be great (which is kind of hinted at by Venkman at the end of the first game…), but I had always assumed L.A. or Chicago, never in my wildest dreams would I think of busting spooks on the strip!!! Sounds exciting!!!

I mean no disrespect, but I really, really dislike the photo realistic covers… it just looks like a bunch of fans painted in fan gear.

That’s because that’s exactly what it is.

Once you know who the models are, you realize that Runge’s covers are NOT drawings of Peter, Ray, Egon, and Winston, but rather drawings of some very lucky fans dressed as the Ghostbusters. These lucky fans are getting their very own “portraits as ghostbusters” done at IDW’s expense, with the public being asked to pay for them. Any other fan who wanted the same piece of artwork would have to pay Runge for it.

Other than their relatives and friends, who really wants artwork (a comic book cover) featuring the likenesses of other fans? That would be like making covers featuring comic store employees dressed as a ghostbuster and selling them to the public – which IDW has already done.

Since photo realistic drawings can’t be done “properly” due to the actor’s likenesses rights, they should just go with the caricatures. Personally, I think the caricatures look better anyway.

  13. Venkman’s Dad says:

Hey Paul – that does explain it! Thank you. Yeah, I find their likenesses cheesy. I mean, I’m a huge fan of GB myself and dressed up as one for a friend’s Halloween party wedding a few years ago, but I’ll be the first to tell you … we fans look cheesy. :) Maybe it’s because I was weaned on the movie guys and how they always look legit, but for some reason, most fans just look like goofy guys in costumes – myself included. But yeah, I have no desire to pick up covers like that.

On the other hand, the caricatures look fantastic. I love Dan’s artwork.

With that said — I just read #3 last night. Love it!! The whole issue is riddled with subtle and hidden references to the RGB episodes (check out the billboards in Times Square… the goblin on the bridge behind them… the Old West characters in the bar). Love it! And the references to the Rookie – and the Boson gun – were nice too. This series looks to be really solid. Hopefully it keeps up!

  14. Ryan says:

I’m confused. I thought that the digital versions of the books were supposed to be released the same day as their store releases. I haven’t been able to get #3 to show up in the IDW app yet.

    Is there a longer delay?

  15. Erik Burnham says:

Apparently there is. I thought they were day and date, but…

  16. MOS says:

Anyone else think the realistic photo Venkman more resembles Ivan Reitman?

  17. Spengler's Mom says:

    I say a young Kevin Nealon…

  18. Spengler's Mom says:

…and Ray kinda looks like just some dude from Staten Island.

  19. Buster Brad says:

Erik you and Dan should be proud of the books you have been putting on the stands. I’m not just a Ghosthead but a comic book junkie. Mostly DC and your take on the Ghostbusters is my new #1 faverite. I love the little Easter Eggs hidden for the true GB fans. So far the dialogue is witty and true to the characters and love Dans artwork. Can’t wait to see how this first story wraps up and I will be holding my breath for #4. As long as this comic is in print you have me as a loyal patron and reader.

  20. mardraven says:

dude i am so getting the first cover. I have the current 3 issues but i think ill be heading back to the comic book store to get the variants :)

  21. Clay says:

Spotting the “Highway Haunter” praying mantis toy car in issue 2 was the best thing ever! I love all the little Easter eggs in this series.

The Doctor Who references were great too. Thank you!

  22. Erik Burnham says:

We truly appreciate all the support guys! (It’s near the top of my list of things to be thankful for this year. Seriously, thank you all.)

    …I can’t believe I got away with the “bigger on the inside” joke. (;

But I think #5 will surprise EVERYONE when you see a character show up… I needed someone to fit a role, and Tristan suggested… a character that fit nicely. And I enjoy writing them! So hopefully their appearance will put a smile on your face!
