Without a doubt, Mark Sullivan’s matte painting of Peter’s apartment in Ghostbusters 2 is exceptional, and as outlined in this top 50 list (it made #47) it is tragic that the painting was accidentally destroyed (painted on glass, matte paintings were prone to shattering.), but it seems very odd that Matthew Yuricich and his matte of the rooftop temple in Ghostbusters didn’t make the cut. The only thing I can assume is that he was omitted because he was already on the list for TWO other classic paintings, including Ben Hur.

Great news story, Chris. Thank you very much! The talent that goes into matte paintings has always amazed me! Yuricich should have been in that list, again, for Ghostbusters… he was that good!! Pity. But those of us who know how much hard work and talent goes into these… his work will always been our hearts. And Sullivan… still, to this day, I could swear that every shot of Venkman’s apartment in GB2 was absolutely, honest to God, REAL!!!!!
I’ve never seen those two photos before of the artists painting the matte paintings in both films. Nice find. I also never knew the name of the guy who did the GB2 painting.
