Actually, that's a bit mean – it is a fine overview of the franchise, particularly for people who aren't familiar with how much Ghostbusters there is out there.But it did bring up an interesting thought. Everybody loves to take the amount of money Ghostbusters made, plug it into the Inflation Calendar and marvel that today the 1984 money would be worth $600M… but that's not true.
Movie tickets were $2.50 in 1984 (give or take – they were $2.75 in '85, but then some screenings were discount, so let's say $2.50 – it's an easy and not unreasonable number).
If you take the lifetime ticket gross from the two releases in the '80s – $238,632,124 – and divide it by $2.50, that's 95,452,849 butts in seats (approx.) – Now, times that by today's $12 ticket price. If Ghostbusters were made today (this is a hypothetical where the modern audience goes to see and reacts to the movie the exact same way as they did in 1984) it would gross more like $1.2B – that's what Ghostbusters' original box office means – in 1984, it was the equivalent of an Avengers or Titanic at the box office.
