Since we have a discussion thread about how some fans don't want to deal with sex abuse scandals in the fandom elsewhere, would anyone else like to discuss the issue and the idea put forth that groups, particularly those that operate in a public capacity, should look at ways to avoid the problem and how to address the problem, if it should ever happen?
I'll be culling off-topic comments.

Re-posting, as I want the day-timers to see and respond as well. Fair warning, this is what has been called a "maintained perspective" discussion, because while I make no demands that people can't have their own opinions, those opinions that make no sense, are addressing something the discussion is not, or move into the direction of hate (which the last discussion a couple of years ago did), they certainly aren't going to change the PC position that member safety and the reputation of franchises and the copyright we are using hassle-free is important.
Two years ago the suggestion was made that franchises, particularly those that wish to operate within their community at various events, should sit down at come up with some group policy for dealing, internally and externally, with individuals that could damage their reputation. The response was "la la la if we ignore it, it will go away / it only affects their group not mine / no, YOU'RE stupid!" Now a second group, who actively distanced themselves from potential trouble months back still found themselves in the position of defending their name. It's proof that a person doesn't have to be affiliated with a group at all and they can still cause a lot of damage – they just have to put on a jumpsuit in your territory and the link is there whether we like it or not. NOW is it time to think about taking an evening and plan for a few contingencies that apparently aren't as implausible as first thought? On a per group basis, just some simple, stated guidelines of what is expected of members, how the group intends to protect minor members, and how to respond in a fan-shit intersection event?
