Ghostbusters #1 4th of July blockbuster ever?

Posted on July 4, 2008

According to the St. Petersburg Times (Florida), yes. Which is odd, because it wasn’t released on the 4th of July long weekend. And it’s overall box office take doesn’t rival, say, Independence Day. But what makes it #1 is that it dominated the 4th of July weekend in 1984, as well as the weeks leading up to it, and the weeks following. Ghostbusters was THE blockbuster movie of 1984.

In its fifth week of release, Bill Murray’s comedy still sold $11.1-million in holiday weekend tickets (around $25-million at today’s prices). Ghostbusters stayed on top for seven consecutive weeks, was bumped aside by Purple Rain for a week, then reclaimed No. 1 in August.

Six weeks later Ghostbusters was rereleased and again topped the chart, heading toward a final tally of $238.6-million — a whopping $486-million at today’s ticket prices. We’ll probably never again witness such box office longevity in an era attuned to opening weekend bonanzas.

Shot on Site: Stay fit, keep sharp, make good decisions!

Posted on July 4, 2008

A quick one this time (and a request, no less) - some of the larger sequences are big undertakings! But this one is pretty straight forward.

Our favorite wannabe, Louis, is running to catch a bus, which is just located off the corner of East 75th and 1st Ave (practically around the corner from Dana’s apartment and carriage chase.)

In one single shot, we can make out a restaurant name on a blue awning, “The Wicked Wolf.” We can also see a street sign with “E. 75th” on it. And sure enough, there is a Wicked Wolf on East 75th street. The awning is now red, painted over the restaurant name, but we can still see the end of a second sign, above the awning, that is still there - we can make out the words “Bar and Restaurant” - Also, the neon rimmed clock can also still be seen.

And as a bonus treat, in the background, you can see the Slimer driven bus Louis will soon board. It’s not powered up, but rather parked where it was assumed you wouldn’t see it as the camera focuses on Louis running along!

Family Guy cards include one-of-a-kind Ghostbusters card

Posted on July 3, 2008

It’s a brilliant idea for selling cards - for every one box of card packs, Inkworks randomly inserted a hand-drawn card, created by one of 13 comics artists. The variety is amazing (click here for five pages of samples - and simple math will tip you off that there are hundreds more out there), but the prize catch is this Peter Griffin as Ghostbuster card by Chris Moreno (which sold for $150 on ebay - yowza!)

Thanks to Justis for the heads up - man, if only we had $150 lying around, eh?

[UPDATE] Good grief - A look at the first series, which also featured these sketch cards, had 6,340 of them, drawn by 14 artists. Some artists did over 500 cards each! And you can see them all here. Let’s hope they put all the series 2 cards up as well, so we can see if they did any more Ghostbuster cards (maybe not, but hey… maybe.)

Yet another look at manga Ghostbusters

Posted on July 3, 2008

Maximo V. Lorenzo has posted a sampling of art from his story in the Ghostbusters Tokyopop book - click here to see the larger version.

And for those who were wondering, the cover we saw before is the cover of the final book, it appears - though the colouring was not complete last we saw it. Again, thanks to the magic of DeviantArt (and one John Yurcaba - ta very much, man) we can see the finished colouring on the cover, and the black and white original, by MetalHanzo (we’re not sure which artist that is yet.) Winston was smoking in the first version, and they took it out!

Maximo makes a comment on his page suggests that Tokyopop has the license to Ghostbusters, but not the likenesses of the original actors, or the characters as they appear in the Real Ghostbusters cartoon - the artists were given the leeway to make them similar, but they had to look different.

Pre-E3 Ghostbusters preview on G4

Posted on July 3, 2008

According to Adam Sesssssler, this Monday on G4, Terminal Reality will be on hand to demo the Ghostbusters game before it heads off to the Electronic Entertainment Expo the following week. With luck, it’ll be online on the G4 site, afterwards, but I wouldn’t count on it - if you’ve got G4, check it out. Thanks to QZEDDEMOORE for spotting that one.

Free with Trio’s!

Posted on July 3, 2008

Someone on Flickr has posted a selection of their precious childhood doo-dads (and a few Samantha Fox photos - must be an England thing.) What’s notable about the collection is a neat selection of Real Ghostbusters notebooks, drawings, and even a handful of RGB mini-comics that came free inside Trio’s (which may be a cereal or a choco-bar - I haven’t finished my research. UK PC readers, help a colonial out.)

Ghostbusters screening - bring a boat!

Posted on July 2, 2008

Ed Krebes sent a little heads up for the July 18th screening of Ghostbusters on Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota. Not near, or by, but ON Lake Minnetonka! The event is being called a Boat-In Theater - works exactly the same as a drive-in, only the big screen is inflatable. The audio will be broadcast on a low power FM station, so bring a radio. The screen will be anchored in line with the shore, and the audio will transmit over a quarter mile, so presumably people on the beach will be able to watch and hear as well as the people in boats (but I can’t swear to that - details are a little sparse.) The screen can be found at the Cruisers Cove area of Big Island.
