Ever wanted to learn how to make a roast? Ever wanted to do it while watching Ghostbusters? Well, now you can. The popular TBS cooking show, Dinner and a Movie will be airing our favorite flick Monday, March 3rd at 8pm EST (5pm PST), but don’t worry if you miss it the first time, as it reruns again at 10pm PST / 1am EST that same night. The dish of the night is I Ain’t Afraid of No Roast. Mmmmm. TBS airs censored movies, so if you’ve never seen the infamous “Wally Wick” version of the movie, then here’s your chance.

“Ghostbusters” I Ain’t Afraid of No Roast

When you need a meal, and you don’t cook good… Who you gonna call? Well, maybe you could be self-reliant for once, and make this dish yourself.

Ingredients:

* 1 whole beef tenderloin, approximately 5 lbs. (also known as beef filet)
* 2 tablespoons softened butter or olive oil
* 2 tablespoons coarsely ground black pepper
* 1 tablespoon kosher salt
* 1 cup each: roughly chopped carrots, celery, and onions
* 1 tablespoon tomato paste
* 1 tablespoon olive oil
* 1 teaspoon chopped thyme
* 1 tablespoon all purpose flour
* 1 1/2 cups dry red wine
* 1 cup low salt, beef or chicken stock
* 1 catchy tune to remind self of party to call in the event paranormal activity occurs in one’s neighborhood

Directions:

1. Adjust oven rack to upper third of the oven and preheat oven to 450°F.

2. Tuck the tapered end of the meat back under itself a few inches and tie the entire filet crosswise with butchers twine. (This step may be omitted, but helps insure even cooking throughout.)

3. Place filet on a large piece of plastic wrap or foil and rub all over with butter and season with salt and pepper. Wrap filet and bring to room temperature, 30-45 minutes.

4. In a medium mixing bowl, combine and toss together the carrots, celery, and onions with the olive oil, tomato paste, thyme, and flour. Scatter the mixture into a large roasting pan.

5. Transfer the filet to a roasting rack and place over the vegetable mixture. Roast about 30 minutes, turning the roast over halfway through cooking, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of the roast registers 125°F-130°F. Remove from oven and rest 15-20 minutes before carving.

6. While the roast rests, discard any excess fat (if there is any) from roasting pan and then place the roasting pan directly on the stove over medium-high heat. Add the red wine and beef stock and bring to a boil while scraping and loosening any cooked-on bits stuck to the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Reduce the mixture by half and strain into a bowl. Season to taste. Cut twine from roast, slice and serve.

7. After everyone is sufficiently sated, arrange to have the dirty dishes spirited away to an alternate universe.

GB cereal flexi-discs

[UPDATE] My man Pete dropped me a line to clarify the issue of there being two flexi-discs released for the contest. Essentially, they are both the same, audio wise, only Egon asks a different set of questions. Both discs are black, but while one is printed in gold (that’s the one I have) the other is printed in blue. Now I know what to look out for. Thanks Pete!

I’ve been meaning to post this for awhile now, but the big stumbling block has been that I didn’t actually have a record player. Well, that’s not the case any more, so I have a surprise.

Ralston New Ghostbusters Movie Mystery Record - Egon Version (1M mp3)

Back with the release of the second movie, Ralston, makers of the Ghostbusters cereal, held a contest to meet an actual Ghostbuster. To win the contests, kids would look inside their box of cereal (a number of Ralston brands besides the Ghostbusters cereal, including Cookie Crisp, were part of the contest) and find a Flexi-disc inside. The Flexi-disc contained an announcer and “Egon Spengler” (one Maurice Lamarche from The Real Ghostbusters). Over a minute was spent telling kids to see the new movie before Egon read a series of really easy questions. Kids would then send in their answers and hopefully win. There were apparently two version of the disc (Buy more cereal kids!), though I’ve never heard how it was different (perhaps another RGB voice actor?). If anyone here has heard the other disc, wants to sell me their disc, or was one of the winning kids who’d like to share the experience with the class, please drop me a line.

Gooth-buthterth.

Have you ever said to yourself, “Hey, I’m a Ghostbusters fan, and I want to show the world by getting my tongue pierced”? Well, now you can. Pierce-this.com is offering two varieties of stainless stell barbells (the metal thingies you sometimes see people sporting through their tongues), one in with the GB logo on white and one on classic black. Not to mention Spiderman, Scooby-Doo, Powerpuff Girls, and more keen pop culture icons. At ten bucks each, they’re actually a bit of a steal.

Johnny Lightning GB diorama UPDATE.

Ever vigilant JESUSFREAK spotted this Johnny Lightning report from Toyfair 2003 at figures.com. Included in their coverage was a photo of the GB New York police car pack. The mini diorama comes complete with the car, a NY backdrop (with slimer), and a selection of to scale human figures, all in a regular sized bubble pack. No sign of the Ghostbusters pack as yet, though the Scooby-Doo pack, noticably lacking in any identifiable Scooby-Doo characters, makes one wonder if the Ecto-1a pack will have actual Ghostbuster figures.

EGB GBA games easily available. Finally.

For those of you who have spent nearly a year wondering what was up with the apparently released, but hard-to-find, critically ignored Extreme Ghostbusters game for the Game Boy Advance, well worry no more. The title has started appearing in most major retailers - if nothing else, they can be easily bought online at national stores like Electronics Boutique and KB Toys. Called “Extreme Ghostbusters - Code Ecto-1″ overseas, but just “Extreme Ghostbusters” by North American retailers, the game sells for under twenty bucks.

Johnny Lightning releases more GB diecasts.

The ever vigilant River of Slime has spotted an announcement that Playing Mantis, makers of Johnny Lightning die-cast cars (including an excellent Ecto-1a a few years back) will be releasing a GB diorama 2-pack. The two car set will come with the Ecto-1a (it appears to be identical to the one release on its own as part of the Frightning Lightning line) and a New York City police car (no picture available, but presumably it will match the cars of the era - and by era, I mean 1984). Johnny Lightning will also be releasing a Scooby-Doo diorama at the same time, with the Mystery Machine and a herse (pictured above). Watch for this at toy and specialty stores in May of this year.
