Mystery prop for sale.

hardhat
This hardhat, sporting a Ghostbusters decal, has turned up on eBay. The seller says the item was given to them by an ex-Columbia employee, but even they aren’t sure what it was used for. The initial conclusion is that the item is set equipment, only, the item is apparently artificially distressed - this would suggest then that the item might have been a prop… only, no hard hats appear anyplace obvious in the first film (the second film has hard hats, but they don’t have any logos.)

There’s nothing obvious to suggest the seller’s story is false, but it’s hard to gauge the authenticity of the item (and it’s worth.) If you’re reading this before 11AM East coast time, you might still have time to jump into the final bidding.

its doubtful man…the logo on the hat… its the newest “cleanest” version of the logo — like whered you see it anywhere now… but at the time, as the film was being developed, youll see the logo was SLIGHTLY cruder (in the title sequence, on their uniforms…) so for it to be a prop from the first film it just seems skeptical
Was one of the Village People a GB fan perhaps?

I don’t know that I’d call it doubtful, I just have my doubts. The pictures are of a very low quality, so it’s hard to see much detail, but the logo you’ll notice has no border edge - it’s not just some off-the-shelf sticker, as the edge detail is perfect.

I posted it mostly so that the mass mind of GB fandom can hopefully help figure out what the helmet is, exactly (if it’s anything at all.)

Well TBH, I can’t image it being from GB2 either, because if it was, you’d think it’d have the GB2 decal, wouldn’t you?

Its possible for it to be real; they made all kinds of fun props for the staff to wear.
Also I believe that in an interview of Ivan Reitman on the GB DVD he has a hard hat on his desk. I can’t tell if it is distressed but it is a hard hard hat with a logo on it.

    Well, let’s find that interview.

There’s a collection of helmets that are said to have been in the second film, despite the GBII logos.

They bore a resemblence to the helmets worn by Ray, Egon and Winston in the sewers but lacked the lights… it also looks like said set of GB II stickered helmets that were in one of the Planet Hollywoods, but I can’t find the pictures on GBProps…

I could be wrong about it being on GB Dvd but I know I’ve seen him in an interview sitting at his desk with a similar hat and a small Stay Puft statue sitting there.

Could be a crew item from one of the set carpenters maybe?

Possibly, but the description says it looks like it was artificially aged. I wonder if Aykroyd, being the equipment nut he is, had them added as set props only, something the GBs might need, like they did in the second movie.

There are a lot of possibilities, until we can find out more information.

it’s one of the physical effects helmets that the set guys wore, so when they were making the chairs fly into the air, shattering glass, or blowing up some of the wood pieces, they woudn’t get hurt by stray debri and so people could tell who were controlling the pyrotechnics and things

That interview was shown on the Masters Of Fantasy: Dennis Muren special back in the late 1990s on the Sci-Fi Channel. You can see a screen shot of Ivan at his desk with the hard hat and the little Stay-Puft figure that Spooky also mentioned on my site here:

    (scroll down a bit, it’s photo #2)

However, the hard hat Ivan has is white, not yellow, and the logo is reversed.

Hmm - not the same one. I kinda like the white one better.
