The Official Xbox Magazine in the UK hit the stands this past week, and their cover story, like Game Informer, is the boys in grey. The feature is lite on text information, but high on images, giving a good look at some of the stuff seen whizzing by in the various online video clips.
Of interest is the OXM estimation that the game will equal about 8-10 hours of play time, that the containment unit will act as a ghost database (allowing you to view the ghosts inside and read information about them), and similarly, the PKE meter will allow you to scan ghosts in the field and access their particulars in Tobin’s Spirit Guide.
Thanks to Ben for being British and generous.

Lookit that creepy Xbox shadowing.

Im not a gamer, but doesnt 8-10 hours sound exceedingly short for a video game? Or is that like a benchmark average?
Also, while Im concerning, does anyone else feel totally bummed by not being able to drive the Ecto-1?
8-10 hours is average, taking in account the game. I finished both Tomb Raider’s (for the 360) Legend and Anniversary in lik 8 hours. Some people spend a solid 20 or more looking for all of the extra stuff. Gears of War was around 10-15. I think the average 8-10 hrs. is great for a Ghostbusters game. Seeing that it’s linear that’s pretty good.
If it were free roam I’d expect 15-20 hrs. or more. And it is very dissapointing not being able to drive the Ecto-1. Mostly because you can drive it in the older versions, but why not here? lol, but yes that length is about normal.
Hmmm so its not free-roaming? It follows a story… ok well man, Im stumped as to how this is going to, literally, play out
Like I try to base it on say, a game like Zelda, and wonder how that compares, if at all
8-10 hours is increasingly average for linear, narrative driven games. People reported finished Gears of War in about 5 hours. F.E.A.R. was about 10.
Wow – why did it take most of the day to post my reply. Oh well. Doc hit the nail on the head.
While we don’t know all the details, the games I mentioned are likely similar – linear, story-driven missions, with cut scenes. Maybe light-openness (two+ routes to one goal in any given level).
I guess this all makes sense, though it is a bit Greek to a non-gamer. I guess I just keep thinking about like how you can often play a game all day just get through one section…
8-10 hours is a rough estimate based upon how long it took Game Testers to play it and how long the actual story and content are. So based upon all of these variables they come up with a nice round number for how long it might be.
But that’s not saying it will or won’t last that long though. For some, obviously, they’ll complete it from day of purchase, whereas not so experienced players may beat it in a week or so. You have to remember there are unlockables, achievements, and special items you can find to unlock achievements and unlockables. So with this in mind the game can concievably be a little longer around 12 hours or so with all the extras added in.
And the light doth shine in my face! HA, thanks for the info. Its so weird to approach video games again after so long… I mean honestly, the last game I played was Zelda for 64 So that’s where my knowledge of game length comes from.
Yeah, Zelda is linear, but free roaming. A hard combination to pull off. It has a set story, and set events, but you can roam freely through the world, but can’t progress until you’ve done what you’re supposed to do withint the confines of the story.
Personally a more linear Ghostbusters is fine with me. I like it more then freeroaming. I like being told a story that’s why I started playing games to begin with. While Zelda being around 10-13 hours is actually a good comparison in length. But the gameplay will be more along the lines of Set Level gameplay, (GOW, Splinter Cell, etc). Just with a crap load of extras.
Besides I’ve been waiting years to hear Murray talk about what it was like doing the movies/game in retrospect like all the other have. It’ll be fantastic!
Yeah, it should be a good length for us Ghostheads since we’ll be so much more involved in just playing as a Ghostbuster and being involved in the story so I doubt we’ll rush through. At least at first. I like going through games somewhere down the line and trying to see how fast I can compete them, although I hope it wouldn’t be as bad as Return of the King. I semi-rushed through it and completed it in 2 hours.
Don’t forget the ghosts vs. ghostbusters online gameplay. That should keep a lot of gamers entertained for months. — & yes, i’m bummed about not being able to drive the ecto-1; but they did say it would be involved in some of the gameplay…maybe the computer controls the driving while you shoot proton streams at ghosts out of the car door window???
The footage on the xbox 360 looks amazing. I can’t wait to see the game play footage on the wii. Hopefully that shows up on the net in the not-so-distant future.
