A fairly well detailed Ecto-1 turned up on a parking lot in Richfield, MN. Why? Who does it belong to? Maybe it doesn’t matter More info on what’s up below – have a look at some close-up pics!
[UPDATE] Here are some more pics – it appears that this was a deliberate visit to Best Buy corporate headquaters. Which begs the question, was this something to do with some the upcoming sales of the game, moves (possibly on Blu-Ray), etc? Remember, stores had exclusive goodies for the sales of the Real Ghostbusters DVDs, and Best Buy often has DVDs with exclusive extra discs or mini-comics, etc.
[UPDATE] Well, it’s official – it’s the real Ecto-1, post-restoration. AJ at GBFans was there, and it was part of an official corporate promotional tour. So, it’s pretty safe to assume you’ll be able to buy the Ghostbusters game at your nearest Best Buy. ;p
[UPDATE] AJ has 277 (Yes, as in nearly three hundred) reference pictures of the car at GBFans, for those of you who would like to have a look.
[UPDATE] The world is awash in photos from this one appearance of the Ecto-1. Here’s another set. If this first surprise peek is any indication, restoring the cars (still no sign of the Ecto-1a yet) was money well spent on Sony’s part.
[UPDATE] AJ’s at GBFans.com, having seen the car, and presumably having talked to people in a position to know (either with Sony or Best Buy) is reporting that Sony and Vivendi are aiming to release the game and Blu-Ray disc at the same time;
Both are hoping to be released on October 21st, 2008.. while neither is set in stone, both are likely to be released on the same day. Vivendi is working on a Best Buy Exclusive promotion, as well as promotions with Target and GameStop.
Sony and Vivendi are also teaming up for a DVD Cash Promotion. All copies of the Vivendi Ghostbusters: The Video Game for XBox 360, PS2, & Wii will come with a DVD cash credit good towards the purchase of the Ghostbusters Collectors Edition DVD (while supplies last).
This is unofficial of course, but we’ve heard rumblings for awhile that this would be the case, and this goes a loooong way to supporting those rumblings.

I noticed these as well and I was gonna say something. It’s very random that a gorgeous Ecto-1 replica would show up at Best Buy HQ. The one user’s description indicates that he didn’t even know why it was there. Definitely something to keep an eye on.
To me this begs the question (and someone with a keener eye and or inside knowledge may be able to dispel) where is the actual Ecto 1? Last time we saw it, it was more or less completely restored. The vehicle in the picture looks very pristine. Could this vehicle be the original?
It is the Ecto-1, fully restored. For pictures and the full story see GB Fans.
Hollywood Detective speaking : Ok, its been 3 months we’ve checked on the 2 Original Sony’s Backlot Ecto-1 and Ecto1A. However, Just to say that dad and myself did check up on both beginning of April…both huge sliding doors were closed. Couldn’t get threw any other way. Could this be a replica or the Original Ecto-1 from Sony’s Backlot ? Again, they did say that the cars were going on tour for the Game, Comic-Con, and going back to Sony Pictures to be on a safe display for the tour. Since there were no updates from me about both Ecto’s, this means that Ecto-1 is really complete and Ecto-1A is maybe finally done. I’ll see what i could do to check on the Ecto’s.
Gosh. I forgot to mention Comic Con!
They are in the works with getting Harold Ramis and Aykroyd to appear with the car at Comic Con. Ramis is susposedly on board.. and Aykroyd is in the works (he might be busy).
it could mean…..that the big announcement is a game/blu ray release and no gb3???
wow, patrick will be very very very pissed !
I’m sure Patrick will probably be weighing in sooner or later.
Despite the inaccuracies here and there, it’s great seeing the car look in such great shape after hoe we’d gotten used to seeing her (even after her lacklustre restoration from a few years back), it’s just great to see her spick and span again.
oh yeah….
i hope that she’ll make an appareance also here in italy, Verona…we have two Gamestop.
Nobody in Italy would make a promotional tour like this……. these are the reasons for wich i love America!
What’s this about the Ghostbusters Collector’s Edition?? I’d love to snatch up a copy once it’s available!!!
I wonder what else they could add to the collector’s edition. I’d just like to see RGB on DVD and a Blu Ray version of GB1 and 2
So now we know the big announcement at the San Diego Comic Con probably isn’t going to be the blue ray release.
I was there and took alot of the photos – 5 of the 8 in the blog post’s photo. From what we were hearing it appears that the crew was here to promote the game. We see some pretty interesting things come through for that kind of stuff.
Myself and my buddy Alex got some shots as well, check em out here:

BTW, I keep copyright on my photos because of folks that have abused my previously Creative Commons photos. I don’t mind them being used on the site as long as there’s some attribution. Thanks!
Why not?
As far as I know.. the Collectors Edition is the currently available Green Box set.
I don’t think the blue ray will be the big announcement because the cat is now out of the bag.
I think a gb3 movie announcement is very slim.
Maybe they’ll announce a new toy line (to go along with the video game) — kinda like what StarWars the force unleashed is doing.
No, probably not GB3, and yes, there is other stuff to be announced, but this doesn’t take Blu-Ray out of the running just yet. This is an unofficial news item – AJ got some inside scuttle-butt, so we’re in the know. But we’re in the thousands – Sony is thinking in terms of surprising millions. So, until they make an official announcement, Blu-Ray is still on the table at Comic Con.
yea, i suppose you’re right.
Personally, I don’t see the announcement of GB 1 & 2 on Blue Ray as a big deal. — But, even if i’m disappointed in the announcement, i can still look forward to bust’n ghosts on my 360 come autumn 2008 (if it doesn’t continue to be delayed).
This is porbably a stupid question but.. Is it still there? or was it like a “one day” sort of thing. (The Ecto-1 comes to my state and I miss it :/ )
It’s the downside to being on the cutting edge, Rob. For us, news is just something that’s a slow leak until finally officially confirmed. It’s a big surprise for the rest of the world.
El, it could very well still be there, but I doubt it.
I hope the big announcement is either an action figure line (that includes the 4 guys this time), or even better, a DVD Box-set of “The Best of The Real Ghostbusters” (several volumes comprising the complete series is very unlikely considering there were around 200 episodes). If the big thing they have to tell us is that GB1 and GB2 will come out in BluRay, then, what a letdown.
