While digging around, I found this short, but informative article on the history of the Midnight Movie, and while brief, it cements Ghostbusters place as a legitimate Midnight Movie – the reason? Us.

What a cool article. I was also happy to see “Donnie Darko” (one of my favorite movies), and the Evil Dead Trilogy make the list (also interesting since in Donnie Darko, Donnie and his girlfriend do indeed go to a midnight showing of Evil Dead 1).
I think this is simply more proof that Ghostbusters is just one of those rare movies that just WORKS, no matter when it’s shown or who it’s shown to. Like all classics in all categories (that video game from ’82 you still play, that car made in ’75 you still work on), it’s just timeless. The first movie holds up as well today as the day it opened in ’84. Can’t wait to get the Blu-Ray edition and a copy of the game, and hold a viewing party.
We’ll wait until Midnight to show the actual movie, though, of course.
“But today’s midnight movie success is more contingent on an already-existing fan base, of which Ghostbusters’ is vast—and more than willing to wear a proton pack in public.”
And proud of it!
Ugh, they put Forbidden Zone in there! I actually saw that. My eyes still bleed when I even THINK about having seen that. Not for the squeamish.
