There’s a new blog at CHUD, and the author’s opening salvo is outlining what he considers the best 1 minute and twenty-seven seconds in cinema history – I won’t tell you what it is, you can read that for yourself, but suffice to say that it exists in the middle of the best motion picture in cinema history (or at least, I think so. You’re likely to agree as well, if you’re here reading this.)

THIS is the reason because Gb1 is great and Gb2 not good as the first.
In GB1 there were science, a little bit of religion, humor. They were normal people facing supernatural menaces and they were SCARED of these things
In Gb2 they were portayed like…..”superheroes”: very little science, no religion, less humor. And they were not scared, there were no sense of “unknown”…excuse me for my bad english!
Here here. I agree with everything Jon Abrams said…right on the money. Its interesting to see how Hudson comes into play because up until that point, he never gets much of a chance to shine. What’s nicer still is that he doesn’t kill his scenes, he allows them to be what they need to. Whereas Jon puts, and I agree, Murray or Murphy would have choked them a bit, milking them for the comedic aspect; the laugh. It’s not to say they COULDN’T do it justice, Murray especially, but again, as Abrams said, Hudson’s role was to ground the film as a character. So with his perspective finally blooming in that scene, you instantly get a sense that this is infact quite real to all of them, not just him. Stellar.
I love that scene. In my opinion that simple conversation about the end of thye world is scarier than anything that could be created from cgi.
quote! Ray’s face showing that he realized that Winston’s right is one of the most powerful emotional shot in the movie history
It is a good scene, but it has always bothered me a bit. Like Winston, I believe in God (and love Jesus’ style), so after watching the movie I couldn’t help but look up Revelation 7:12 in my own Bible. I noticed that the movie had misquoted the Bible. The quote we know from the movie is from Revelation 6:12: “And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.” KJV
What Revelation 7:12 actually says is “Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, [be] unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.” KJV Though the movie was off by a chapter, I think it’s kind of cool that people like me who see the movie and go to the Bible and look it up actually find that verse instead. Maybe Aykroyd had something up his sleeve…
That has alway been a favorite scene of mine. I think it’s mainly due to the fact that they were humorous in nature to begin with and that scene added a whole new dimension to their characters….and the team as a whole.
Of course I could be wrong…have been before (and as the wife thinks from time to time) will be again.
This was a great article that sums that scene up nicely. It’s very important to the plot of the movie as well as the pacing and Dan and Ernie are excellent in it. As big a hit as Ghostbusters is, I think this scene is indicative of how underrated the movie actually is.
“THIS is the reason because Gb1 is great and Gb2 not good as the first.”
I don’t think so, but it depends on what you mean – why you like it more or why its a better quality film. That seems more like why people would prefer it, not the main reason why its a better quality film (that would go to the writing, acting, editing, etc)
“In Gb2 they were portayed like…..”superheroes””
Which partly explains why I like Ghostbusters 2 better, it focuses more on the heroics of the Ghostbusters. That and it focuses more on the theme of “good vs evil” than the first.
As for the topic at hand, I always loved that scene. Really knows how to give you shivers and sets up the threat perfectly.
i’m talking of “why i like it more”.
The second is a good film itself, i watched it billions of times (the courtroom scene is epic!) but compared to the first…you know……is like comparing your first kiss to the others……
“is like comparing your first kiss to the others……”
Lol, not in my case, but thats what happens when you’re not emotionally interested in the first girl you kiss. That changes the dynamic entirely.
you’re right! but everybody here are emotionally interested in GHOSTBUSTERS!
I loved that article – right on the money! It is the scene everyone of my friends mentions about Ghost Busters. Awesome stuff!
I think that other of the many reasons why I feel GB2 is inferior to Ghostbusters, is that it couldn’t compete with the reveal of a giant marshmallow man, as the cause for Armageddon. That moment was the one that grabbed me the most when I saw it in theaters (and I was 3 years-old). The scene with Winston and Rey inside the ECTO-1 I could only appreciate it a few years later.
