Eagle-eyed John pointed me towards the Deviant Art account of a particular artist who has worked in the past for Tokyopop, and who has posted a particular pencil sketch that raise an eyebrow. The single piece features a decent looking Egon (“Spangler”, but hey, that’s what editors are for, right?), cute-as-pie Janine, our favorite civic administrator, Hardemeyer and a mystery character, the scholarly Teplitz. The piece is dated 2008 and the label and subtitle tease are suggestive, even if not conclusive.
It’s possible this has nothing to do with the Tokyopop Ghostbusters project, and even if it is, it’s possible that these are submissions, but the artist wasn’t chosen to be a final participant, but assuming that it is for reals, that’s… cool. Oh sure, Egon look a little young, but it’s Manga. And Janine looks fantastic! I’m really looking forward to this – everyone be ready to check out the July issue of Diamond’s Previews catalog, as that’s when the book will likely be pre-listed.

Anybody Else Notice Jack on the lower left? I guess he’s going to be around too. Anybody know if the 4th person in the sketch is anybody we know yet? This is all too cool!
can’t wait to pick this up!
Egon looks a LITTLE young? How about fresh out of high school?
Let’s hope he makes it into college so he can learn how to build nuclear accelerators.
I guess that would make Janine the “older woman”!
arg. I just re read the original post. I apologize, I am an idiot who is on enough cold medication to drop a giant slor, I’ll be quite now. lol
A visit to his DeviantArt reveals that these are indeed character sketches for the Comic book due out in October. Read through his comments.
Yes, it’s pretty much certain it’s for the project – but it’s the Internet, and I prefer to report everything with a touch of “apparently.”
I’ve never been a fan of manga and I’ll never will, but this is ghostbusters we are talking about so I will give it a chance. Manga comics are usually black and white, correct? what are the chances they will make ghostbusters in colors?
Egon looks like 10 years old or something… Janine’s like one of those japanese card game monsters. I truly don’t think this is the way a GB comic has to be drawn, so here’s hope the story goes well! As for the drawings, they should take a look or to at the Legion comic or the animated series, which is still better then this.
Manga really isn’t my thing and I always shudder when I hear of things being re-imagined as manga-ised characters. Now, I admit I will be getting the book because it’s Ghostbusters and I’d love to read any new GB stuff but this art just doesn’t do it for me.
I think these designs look great. Whether you like manga or not, I’d say these sketches, if nothing else, capture Egon’s & Janine’s “essence”. We haven’t seen much yet, including any equipment, but I’d go as far as to say that these character designs look better than 88MPH’s books.
I whole heartedly dissagree, Jason. The essence of Jenine and Egon are cute busteling 10 year olds. If it were truely Egon’s “essence” it would be that of a rock with a stephascope. And Janine of a bitter middle aged woman, because as cool as Janine was she was always bitter, especially when her and Egon didn’t work out.
88 MPH character designs may have had a flaw, but captured the attitude of the movie character I think fairly well. And yes, manga does not sit well with me at all mind you, and hopefully this will be a one shot “hey that’s cool” kind of deal. Not an ongoing series, because that would make me frown.
Well, we’ll just have to agree to disagree. ; )
