IDW to publish Ghostbusters comic! “The Other Side”
Posted on July 23, 2008
Big ups and an owed beer to Netsolo for sending in this pic from the IDW publishing booth at Comic-Con, which is hyping Ghostbusters: The Other Side. So for those of you that weren’t sold on the Tokyopop manga, you have another option it looks like!
New comic series by one of the fastest growing comic publishers today. Nuff said!

Lots of related stuff down here, the video game booths at Activision and SPE are all dark with promise of playable demos later… I’m sure Chris will break the news shortly but hope you all own Blu-ray players…
Good ole’ PS3 handles my gaming and blu-ray needs.
I’m definitely subscribing to this upcoming comic and I hope they intend on publishing it for awhile.
I’m taking off work the day the Blu-ray is released to rock GB1 & 2 in 1080p all day.
It’s a start. I don’t know how I can afford all this stuff.
more stuff.. yeah! 2008 the year of the Ghostbusters.. or should i say october the month of..
Annnnnd Sebastien Clavet rolls in his future grave.
You couldn’t pick a better publisher to get a Ghostbusters publisher! I hope they get a great writer/art team too. We’re frickin’ lucky, IDW rocks!
sweet…more ghostbusters stuff for october!!!! first the game, then the blu ray discs, then the manga comic, then the whole series of the Real ghostbusters on dvd, and now this!!!!! i know this, like most people, i’ll be broke in october lol, 2008 is the year of the ghostbuster :D
I hope there is some good stuff in store for 2009 too! A new GB comic series is always good news.
Merchandising! Merchandising!
Where the real money from the movie is made. Ghostbusters: the T-shirt, Ghostbusters: the coloring book, Ghostbusterss: the lunch box, Ghostbusters: the breakfast cereal, Ghostbusters: the FLAMETHROWER–the kids love this one–
Keep it coming, I think I may have a quarter left unspent under the couch! *digs feverishly under cushions*
Seriously, in November I will be homeless at this rate. VERY Happy, but homeless lol
Awesome! Can’t wait to read it. This Comic-Con looks to be the best ever for GB fans.
Thank you IDW!
Although I assume this means that there’s even less of a chance that those who ordered the 88MPH Hardcover will get it now, since their license has obviously expired. Not to be a downer or anything.
‘The Other Side’, eh?
What a FANTASTIC idea O.o
I’m speechless. Whiklst I loved the 88MPH series, as short as it lasted and as miserable a set of circumstances it ended in… I’m all for this new comic from IDW, so does this count as a miniseries with the hopes of launching as a full series, or will it be a full series with “The Other Side” acting as the series subtitle?
Only time will tell, but I’m excited… especially with it being IDW. :)
And so soon as well… “It’s Coming”, but the wait won’t be all that long. ;)
I hope this isn’t the big announcement that is due because I’ve never been into comics. Guess I’ll buy it though…I mean, it is Ghostbusters after all!
I notice that they don’t have the actors likenesses which is a little disappointing.
Actor likenesses cost extra, a heck of a lot extra… besides, they don’t need to look like the actors to still be the Ghostbusters.
More GB stuff to be released… GREAT!!
I´ll end the year broken… DAMN!!
IDW? Damn. They are always overpriced (4 bucks an issue) and the art is usually lacking. Writing is hit and miss. Could be worse though… could have been Moonstone (shudder)!
The poster behind the gentleman in the picture looks very familiar. Any body else think so?
Take that, Clavet!
Hmmm, I like that there’ll be more Ghostbuster stuff, but without the original GB’s likeness? …I don’t know.
Alright guys, I need to get this off my chest.
It’s like some of fans think that without the likenesses of Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis and Hudson that it’ll fail, or won’t do as well than if they’d looked like they did in the movies.
The Real Ghostbusters managed pretty well without them, so did the 88MPH comic despite the other things that killed it.
The fact of the matter is that if they were to use the likenesses of the actors, it’d cost a hell of a lot of money… money that could be put to better use elsewhere… especially with Bill who, despite having recently given his likeness to the game may still be fickle on other accounts.
So frankly, it is not a major loss if the Ghostbusters don’t look like the actors who played them in the films… it isn’t essential to have them look like the actors, and I think it’s doing the project a major disservice to grade it on a factor that is simply one aethetic of many.
Now, if the Ecto-1 was turned into a black car with purple strobes, or the Firehouse was made a single-story concrete station… or the Packs were made into spaceage backpacks, that’d be a legitimate concern… but the characters not looking like the actors? That’s not a good enough reason to be concerned about it.
Ben speaks the truth.
“Now, if the Ecto-1 was turned into a black car with purple strobes”
Ben, the Ecto-1 *was* a black car with purple strobes originally–I believe Ivan Reitman changed this so that it would show up better in night shots. Perhaps you were referring to this?
I agree, as long as each character has his distinctive voice (which I think the 88MPH series managed to do perfectly) then it’s all good.
I wonder if this will be a one-off comic, a one-off mini-series, or a new series. I hope that it’s a one-off because I really don’t feel like collecting *anything* right now, especially comics. I’m still reeling from the 88MPH disaster.

Yeah, the OTHER positive to this is that it officially puts a close to the 88MPH fiasco. It’s nice to have closure, isn’t it? I just feel bad for all those suckers who ordered it direct from Sebastien and will never get their refund. I got mine from Graham Crackers last January, and I advise any others who ordered from Graham Crackers to start asking for theirs now, and use that money to but this new comic. Actually, see if Graham Crackers could apply your refund to a new order for the IDW and/or Tokyopop comics, and then refund you the difference. Two birds, one stone.
By the way, for those who don’t know, in May or June of this year, Sebastien removed all of the news from the 88mph.net main page and replaced it with a list of urls and links for Ghostbusters websites. The hardcover banner and page, and Ecto-1 lithograph banner and page, are still there. I wonder if he can still legally sell those lithos or *any* GB merchandise at this point.

Steven, I think that all of the things Ben mentioned in his list were original ideas from the movie that were changed into to what we see in the final film. Remember, the movie was also originally supposed to take place in space, hence Ben’s reference to “spaceage backpacks”. I kinda got that as the subtle joke Ben was making. If I’m wrong Ben, let me know.
[...] have been some reports from ComiCon regarding Ghostbusters. As you know I’ve been following the recent upswing in Ghostbusters merch [...]
Good job in catching this Troy and posting it. I’ve walked the con floor several times and still haven’t seen this booth yet.

175,000+ people — and I didn’t run into you once sir… argh… hope you had a good con!
The thing that has to be present, which may have been mentioned is the personalities. If you mess with the personalities, and pimp-out the no-ghost logo, and tweak the formula, ..you change the very dynamics that made it successful. Trying to make it better is predictable, and the predictable “upgrades” alone would kill it for me personally. I hate predictable Hollywood, doing what predictable Hollywood does. It’s boring.
