Blu-ray details in Sci-fi magazine
Posted on July 24, 2008

Latest issue of (as far as I can tell) Sci-Fi magazine has a small, but detailed blurb on the Ghostbusters Blu-ray sets. While more details will likely come out of Comic-Con, this is a nice start;
Available Oct. 21 on Blu-ray ($56.95 two-disc set).
Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and the rest of the Ghostbusters come to Blu-ray in this collection of the 1984 film and its 1989 sequel. The Blu-ray version includes a digital copy of both films, the picture-in-picture “Slimer Mode,” exclusive featurettes and a photo gallery. Also due Oct. 21 is a limited-edition DVD double-feature gift set ($39.95) that’s packaged with a collectible scrapbook, Stay Puft Marshmallow Man figurine, trading cards and slime.
I think they got those numbers confused - the $39.95 is probably the single disc of Ghostbusters and the $59.95, as they mention at the top, is the gift set with all those goodies.
Whoops, I get it now - I missed “DVD”. Man, how many times can one person buy a DVD? For a Stay Puft doll, I’m about to find out. My word, look at all those goodies. The bad news, at least for those of you that disliked the green goo style cover (I actually liked it), is that the Blu-ray disc will use the same art - no word on a box or case for the gift set (though it would, out of necessity, totally need one with all that stuff.)

On the prices, from what I understand, the Blu-ray set will be 56.95. The 39.95 set will be a regular/standard DVD re-release packed with the goodies. Maybe that clears it up. Take care.
That’s a load of crap that all of the goodies aren’t coming with the Blu-ray. I have the ‘99 releases and the green goo box.. and now I have to buy it a THIRD TIME just to get all that stuff when I’m already buying the Blu-ray.
Sony’s not the only company doing this, but it its aggrevating.
I don’t care, Im gonna buy it anyway. Can’t wait you capitalist pigs sony!
more stuff to add to what i have already.. cool..
Man Im gonna buy it, but doesnt a small part of you feel like youre being had? It doesnt sound like theyre putting much new stuff on the discs… Time will tell Im sure.
Without any confirmation of genuine special features, I think I’ll pass… the scrapbook sounds a lot like the last release of the DVD (and as it happens, I bought the scapbook that someone was selling separately on eBay so now, I have even less reason to get this), and whilst the Stay Puft figurine may be cool, that, the probable already-released scrap book and the slime aren’t enough on their own to make me buy the films again UNLESS they have good special features… which seems unlikely at this juncture.
Maybe I´ll buy the bluray and the DVD (once again)… c´mon, we are the ones who support the franchise.
Do you think the StayPuft is the “exclusive” that you got if you bought the DVD two-pack at (I think) FYE? Or pre-ordered it or something like that? I don’t think I’ll be buying this repackaged set again…And for 40 dollars? You’re basically paying 25 dollars for a StayPuft, trading cards, and Slime, assuming the scrapbook and special features are what you can get with the current 2 DVD set at Circuit City or Best Buy for 15 bucks. Or the OOP special edition from ‘99 that you can get at Wal-Mart for $7.50. Is this even going to be a new transfer? IT would be funny if the menus were still the same as the previous DVDs…Sorry to sound so negative, just a little perspective. I’m still excited for the game and the RGB DVD set!!
I’m actually hoping that the scrapbook IS the same from the 2005 set, as that will give me a reason to no longer have to keep the 2005 set. It’s vastly inferior to the 1999 DVDs, and the only good thing about it is the scrapbook. For the record, I bought two sets so that I could keep one scrapbook in mint condition and have the other one as a “reading copy”.
I just hope this new set uses a far superior film print than the 2005 set - and that it includes movie-related extras for GB2! More GB1 extras wouldn’t hurt either. Hey Sony, how about a complete workprint copy of both films? I know you have one for GB1 as that’s obviously where you pulled the Deleted Scenes and Before SFX angle footage from. Maybe you can see if you have a copy of these notable deleted scenes in your vaults: Fort Detmerring, Louis With Muggers in Central Park, and Ecto-1 Shuns Cops’ Ticket.
As for the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man figurine, I hope that’s different from the 2005 set promo squishee. I don’t need another one of those. The trading cards sound interesting. It would be a hoot if it was a complete set reprint of Topps’ GB2 set (even though I already have mint and non-mint sets), with a new set commissioned and done by Topps for GB1. The slime I’d take a pass on. That’s a rather useless novelty for me.
I’ll reserve further judgment until more details are released and I see some box pics.
As for the Blu-Ray… I don’t have a player, so that’s a pass for me. It’s a shame it’ll have some extras not on the DVD (the picture-in-picture “Slimer Mode,” exclusive featurettes, and a presumably exclusive photo gallery), but dems da breaks. I’m sure that fans with Blu-Ray players will fill us in on what EXACTLY these are when the discs come out, with screen shots and whatnot. Maybe us non-Blu-Ray owners could even get downsampled copies of these extras on unofficial DVDs :-)
By the way, in case anyone was wondering (and I know that no one was, but I needed a segue), the 2005 DVDs have gotten two significant re-releases since the original release. They were released individually on March 14, 2006, as you all know. What you might not know is that this year, the “gift set” was repackaged in one double-disc plastic case, sans the “movie scrapbook”, under the title “Ghostbusters Collection”. I saw it on a Wal-Mart shelf two weeks ago selling for $9.96.
I just thought of something. I wonder if the trading cards will be down-scaled reprints of the original GB1 and GB2 lobby cards.
Probably not because I’m probably giving Sony too much credit to have thought of that :-)

Since I just found the cover art for the Blu-Ray release on Amazon.de, I thought this would be a good time to recap what we know so far. By the way, the Blu-Ray is not yet available for pre-order on the US Amazon site.
