Thanks to JP for emailing me earlier today – don’t normally pay attention to my email much on Sunday’s, but I’m glad I did today. Newsarama has an interview with Keith Champagne, writer on the new IDW Ghostbusters mini-series, The Other Side.
NRAMA: Were you a fan of the movie?
KC: I think the first Ghostbusters movie is one of the greatest comedies of all time. The second movie… maybe not. But it has some great moments sprinkled throughout.
That’s a pretty good way to start an interview – be sure to check out the rest of it.

At first, I wasn’t into the premise of the mob hunting the Ghostbusters.
After reading this interview and thinking about it, there are so many opportunities to make this interesting. I’m looking forward to the first issue.
See? What’d I tell ya!
You wuz right – we just assumed it was for Tokyopop. “How could there be TWO comics coming this Fall – that’s insane!”
Looking forward to the comic, but honestly I’m still a little skeptical of the premise. It’s odd to me that he’s so down on RGB (how is that possible for a child of the 80s anyway?) when he’s using a premise that’s so typical of the cartoon and NOW comic book.
Hey, I’m with ya, D. Skeptical on this end, for sure…here’s hoping they don’t run too far w/ the whole “dark” thing, a la TDK.
Reimaginings need not apply, IMO.
That said, it certainly looks like the end of the year is shaping up to be quite the expensive time for us ghostheads…
I agree what was with the franchise bashing? he gives little credit to the cartoon which was and is one of the top cartoons ever made, and thats not fandom talking; just look at the merchandising and length of the series compared to many other ones.
Calling it a hit and miss franchise is just silly…I can think of few franchises that have had its own line of potato chips. It was huge and is huge for being something that has had little content in so long; so many young kids still know about it…period
Anyway that kind of mind set scares me that this will be going in the wrong direction. Idk we shall see
I don’t like the guy… He doesn’t understand the different levels of RGB. I hope this will be a good ride.
Even when he sarcastically said that Slimer was his favorite part of the first movie…I thought the whole sequence in the hotel was one of the most beloved parts of the movie. It has some of the best lines and best moments. And yet he’s making fun of it. Strange.
I have to admit, I was really excited about this until I read the interview. Now I am nervous. Which is less than comforting. For years people have been wanting a more grown up series, and to a degree we got that with EGB. Now hear me out, that series while a continuation of the cartoon for me missed the mark because it was too dark, there was never any fun background music, everything was moody, and the stories really were twisted for 8 am on a week day( not that I minded, but it did get heavy sometimes) and while the humor was there it was darker than the series had gone without enough comic relief to balance it.
Maybe I’m rambling , I’ll give this a chance for sure, but I just hope that we don’t get too far away from the “hit and miss” franchise that has kept the initial idea alive for the last 20 years or so.
I think his disinterest in the animated series and Slimer weren’t a direct disinterest based on the quality of either but a general disinterest based on what he seems to feel was the oversimplification of one of the best adult comedies of all time for the sake of pandering to kids and selling toys. While I am not sure thats entirely accurate, to an extent I can understand his concern.
Oh and the “NOT” jokes stopped being funny 15 years ago (about 5 seconds after they WERE funny) .
I think this book will probably be pretty good based on their other work. He may not be way into RGB like we are, but that doesn’t seem too important since the focus is on the movie style. I have high hopes for this, I certainly have a better feeling about this than about the Tokyopop book… we will have to see.
He has taken most of us aback with his negative speech about the sequel. But, it still seems as if he’s at least acknowledging it exists and treating both movies as the highest level of canon, as opposed to the other attempt at a comic. I’d say that’s a plus, but hopefully he’s not down on it, or anything. Hit or miss, it’s certainly not.
That having been said, it’s kind of lame to be down on RGB, but I can’t disagree with that statement about oversimplification. But, that’s also not very true, either, as it has had some incredible level of depth.
As always, though, and with what it seems they’re doing, I’d say paying close attention to the two movies is much more important.
I don’t think any of us expect him to take RGB into account as canon, Tom. It’s just his attitude towards it that really irritates me. RGB plays a big role in the franchise’s longevity but this guy’s dumping all over it. I don’t really get it, especially when his premise is very nearly a ripoff of the RGB comic.
Not to mention almost a ‘film universe’ homage to “The Ghostbusters: Live from Al Capone’s Tomb!”

JP, you wrote the funniest thing I’ve read all night. Congrats!
