It probably shouldn’t be a surprise that a show – in this case, ABC’s The Middleman – which is based on a comic book, about an artist conscripted by a nameless secret agent to help defend the world from the bizarre, would have Ghostbusters references. What is surprising is the sheer number of them!
My only real introduction to the show was when Sci-Fi magazine gave it a big thumbs up – which is to say it’s 8 episodes in and I haven’t seen a single episode. But I tripped over a Zap2It review of last night’s episode; The Ectoplasmic Panhellenic Investigation.
I didn’t read the synopsis too much (I’m reluctant to link to it – it’s spoiler-tastic), but a Ghostbuster fan would be in heaven from all the nods. Let’s just say familiar names abound. I’m off to find a copy.
Anybody here actually watch this show? Is it worth watching?

Totally thought of you during this ep…in fact, meant to Tweet at you, but forgot. I love the show (didn’t you read my post on OUR WEBSITE?
Worth checking out for sure.
I totally read your article, but your complete failure to psychically predict its future Ghostbustery goodness will be held against you!
For just a second, then all is forgiven. I’ll have to go find the show now!
So glad you posted this. My own blog isn’t an appropriate place to mention non-game-related sitcoms, but I want to be sure that all Ghostbusters fans know about this delightfully quirky and sweetly silly sitcom.

yes i watch the show and yes it is worth watching. You should totally watch..
There have been some great stuff. One of my favorites was trout eating zombies… Last nights I was so excited to see. I also loved the references…
Check Check it
Ah! I don’t want a list, I want to see it. But if people saw it and want to check to see if they caught everything (or point out anything others missed), follow AJ’s link.
And if you’re like me, and want to watch it and be largely surprised (I’ve seen some of the references already – can’t be helped) avoid it for now. Spoilers!
Watch it all the time. Brilliantly written and acted! The show’s an “odd gem”. You can watch episodes after they have aired at abcfamily.com . Last weeks episode where The Middleman himself and Wendy Watson’s roomate get close and half to pull away because of the danger…I’ll tell ya. They both acted at the top of their game(s). Too bad this quirky treat of a show isn’t being more widely discovered!
Unfortunately ABC only has the episode before this one available for online viewing.
Here is a Torrent.
I saw an episode of the Middle Man the other night and I literally got goosebumps from all of the references to ghostbusters. this show is great. Watch IT!
My gut told me to watch this show & I’m so glad I did. Accomplishes alot on its lil’ budget. Give it a try!
I’m seeding the Torrent if people are downloading it. It only takes about 30 minutes or less to download.
I have compiled the references that I could find into a YouTube. Granted.. I go a little deeper than just flashing the references by.
YouTube: The Middle Man
It’s on the site now.
Yeah I love this show.
Ummm, Chris, the episode was written by Sarah Watson, not Hans Beimler. Anyway, this one of the few series that I regularly watch on tv (via On Demand so I can watch commercial-free). I’ve compiled a complete list of all of the Ghostbusters references in this episode.
GHOSTBUSTERS REFERENCES (in order, excludes multiple instances of a reference):
01. Incident takes place at Reitman University (6:00).
02. The sorority house is located at 55 Ray Parker Jr. Ave (6:30).
04. The Middleman introduces himself and Wendy to the campus police as Dr. Stantz and Dr. Zeddemore (6:30).
05. The guy who was nabbed by the campus police that The Middleman and Wendy interview is named Louis (7:40).
06. Louis says, “I don’t know if she had legs, but she definitely had arms…because she reached out for me!” (7:40).
07. The display on the Middleman’s binoculars is similar to that of the Ecto-Goggles (10:30).
08. The Middleman says that the special glasses were made from the last of their neutrona wands (10:30).
09. The president of the sorority is named Dana (13:14).
10. The radio code names are Gatekeeper and Keymaster (13:14).
11. Wendy says that they are in “deep ectoplasm” (13:14).
12. Wendy calls the device she assembled a PKE Meter (14:45).
13. The sorority photo identifies two of the sorority sisters/ghosts as Dana Barrett and Janine Melnitz (17:18).
14. While researching Eleanor at Middleman HQ, Ida mentions that she won the Egon Spengler Memorial Award and the Ivo Shandor Medal (20:35).
15. Eleanor says that her machine neuters Positron Collider blasts (24:50).
16. The Middleman, through Louis, tells Wendy that in order to shut off Eleanor’s machine, she has to cause a “total protonic reversal by crossing…” at which point he is cut off (37:15).
