Nothing more need be said really – Kotaku, via Variety, is reporting the official word we’ve been waiting for. You heard it here first, but now it’s golden, Atari has picked up the Ghostbusters video game and expects to release it “early Summer” next year (so… June? 8th maybe?)
The basic nature of the deal is that Atari paid Activision an unspecified amount to take the game off their hands (it’s being referred to as a flat fee, which suggests that Activision is cut out of the royalties, but that’s just a guess) and that Atari has arranged a right of first refusal with Sony to make follow-up games, if the first rocks the world.
Nevil and Sean, cheers for the heads up.

“Execs at Atari wouldn’t comment on Ghostbusters, but sources close to the publisher confirmed it ” … aha
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH GB GAME!
In 6 …more… months. Heh
This is bullshit…shit should have come out already, i’m happy its FINALLY coming out but i’m not ready to jump for joy just yet. The fact that people didnt rush to put this game out in the first place bothers me. I cant wait til it sells at least 2.5 million copys and then activision misses out on all that cash. And i’m pretty sure they opted for 50 cents game instead of ghostbusters? ya hows that doing oh thats right one word TANK! Thanks for the news tho
Actually, The game is not anywhere near done yet, so all those of you who are pissed about the wait… It’s Justified. Trust me on this one, I can feel it. More than feel it actually, I’ve seen it.
THQ picked up the 50 Cent game.
I didnt want to believe anything variety said but they were deff right about the delay and im damn sure believing them when they say atari will publish this game and if I have to wait whatever better than over a year.
*is happy in pants*
Hooray!
Yeah i agree with Venky down there, activision is going to be uber pissed when they see how well this game sells.
well maybe this game can help save atari. score 1 for retro gaming…….and didnt activision publish all the retro ghostbuster games how stupid are they….?????
Yeah, but the last Ghostbusters game for Atari kinda sucked….
Yeah I understand other atari games suck but there not the ones making this game. the people making it is terminal reality so I dont think they can afford to have this game sucks im sure they spent mad money to get this title.
GBFAN79,
I was (jokingly) referring to the circa 1984 game for the Atari–not games published by Atari in its most recent incarnation.
OHHH yeah lol that deff makes sense now hahahaha i hear ya man
OMG im so stoked for this i can see this game hit a mega load!
They just couldn’t give us a break could they? They just HAD to hold it till June didn’t they? Couldn’t give it to us in the first quarter could they?
Oh well, still great news that it’s all been made official. We can all sleep now knowing that the game has a home. Thanks Atari!!
The game was actually nearly complete. So please don’t say the game was no where near complete. 70% or more at the least. It was slated for launch back in October. So it’s rediculous to try and say that the game needs another six months. If it needs another six months, then someone or a group of someone’s has decided that certain things need to be changed, added, taken away, ect.
It could be very good. Or very, very, bad. Atari has the last dip in the inkpot, but with all the very good games they’ve both developed and published lately, i’m not as worried as I was with Activision.
I had a chance to play the demo at the Comic-Con this year. It was great. The lead programmer had told us it was even 3 or 4 revisions old, that they had made a lot of changes to at already. That was late July.
I’m sure the remaining time will be used to fine tune the game, but mostly to set up the marketing for it. Commercials, magazine ads, how/where/when they’ll produce the physical products.
I cannot share the enthusiasm until there’s an OFFICIAL announcement from ATARI.
I totally hear where you comming from andreas but on the other hand I have been wrong in the past about variety mag. They were the first ones to report activision dropping this game soo hearing from these guys and the information we have been provided by gbfans and proton charging im going to chalk this one up as official word.
Well..we finally know..Thank God!!
I’m just wondering if by “sources close to Atari confirm”, they mean Dan Aykroyd so-called “spilling the beans” on that Dallas radio show…which, nobody seems to have been able to find…sounds a bit funny to me.
Ummm…well by having vareity report it and not being able to find that dan akroyd offcially said that doesnt matter. shit is deff tru I mean even Ign had something about it.
Now, it’s Official!
Ghostbusters is Now listed on Infogrames’s(the owners of Atari) web site.
Thats bad ass I wonder when there going to start firing up a website and other things to market this game that is comming out.
