In Boston to promote a new House of Blues, Dan Aykroyd answered some online questions for the Boston Globe – as is typical, the first question asked was about Ghostbusters 3
[Comment From Tom] Dan, I’m extremely excited for the HOB to be back in its birth-city!! I will be attending many shows. On a side note, and I’m sure you get these questions a lot, so I apologize in advance…Ghostbusters 3? I’ve heard that the writers of the Office are currently penning a script? How is this coming along, and should we look forward to this movie seeing the light of day? Thanks Dan!
Dan Aykroyd: Script is commenced early summer. Hope to be in production by late fall 2009
What’s it mean? Well, it doesn’t mean a Ghostbusters 3 is a sure thing. It means that if all goes well, the script commissioned last year will hopefully get the green light by around June, and if that happens, then hopefully the movie will go into production in the Fall. So, excellent to hear Dan is still pushing forward with the film, but it’s still not a done deal yet. Thanks Andreas!
[UPDATE] Big ups to Ain’t It Cool News for helping spread the story, even if they’re not promoting Proton Charging (cut and paste is a privilege, not a right.)

I’m pretty sure if Aykroyd thinks it’s going to happen in in the Fall it’s going to happen in the Fall.. I know we’re trying to keep things level, but let’s be realistic.
I know Sony shit on the franchise all these years, but it seems like they’ve finally seen the light, I’d just like to know Aykroyd’s involvement in the script-making phase.. I’d say this is pretty much a done deal if Dan says so.
I’ve been following the news since Bil’s site was updated with the old Chris Farley rumors, so I’ll say I’m as skeptical as anyone.. but I think it’s time to embrace the inevitable.
Keeping things level and being realistic are the same thing.
Hard, cold fact – until Columbia gives a thumbs up to the script, this can all go away. And has before – I’ve got a copy of a script from six years ago as an example.
And even if the script gets a green light, there are a lot of things that can not line-up and delay or even kill production.
So, having been down this road a lot over the last 15 years, my stance remains the same; I’d like to see a third movie. And until it’s in the can, I’m not going to worry about it.
I posted the news and provided some perspective (in a medium where it’s often ignored by readers.) Beyond that, time will tell.
My stance on this stays the same as well… I do NOT want them to remake or do another sequel of Ghostbusters! We all have fond memories of the franchise because of things that happened in the 80s… Well this isn’t the 80s anymore, and a new GB movie will just further undermine the success and longevity of the first movie, which Gb2 already hurt… No matter what they could produce, it isn’t even going to come close to having the same amount of “magic” and charisma as the first.
On a side note, when I first read the post I thought it said “Aykroyd hopes for GB3 production Fail”. Way to dash my hopes!
I don’t think Ghostbusters 2’s inferiority to the first one takes anything away from the 1st one…that’s like saying if Steven Spielberg makes a bomb, that he’s no longer a force to be reckoned with; or like saying if someone makes a CD that TOTALLY SUCKS (in every possible way, to an extent that NOBODY wants to listen to it…) that whatever music you and/or I consider “GREAT(!)” is not as “GREAT(!)”…I mean, seriously; if you don’t like it, don’t watch it; don’t buy it; don’t pay any attn to it. Also, how on earth can you say for a fact that a GB3 won’t live up to the 1st one? Personally, I think GB2 was allowed to be made the way it was b/c so many wee youngsters were having the whole GHOSTBUSTERS thing marketed to them and they assumed (rightly so) that if adults didn’t like the results of their attempt at a sequel, then at least the children will like it. Well, the children of today aren’t that massively into GB or GB2. Sure, they like it, but it’s no longer something children, generally speaking, go crazy over…I’m sure whatever happens this time will be more technically good.
I think GB2 had every bit the magic of the first one; of course it’s not original or groundbreaking…if you want one of those why would you watch a sequel in the 1st place?? But it did have its charms; but you gotta put your expectations and pre-conceived notions about a film behind you when you go into a film like GB2. I find it odd that there’s these numerous reviews of GB2 on Amazon that complain about things like “they ignored Elmer Bernstein’s score and made a totally different one!”, and then, sometimes in the very same review, they talk about how “un-original” GB2 was…
Sounds like he’s saying that Sony wants to wait to see how well Ghostbusters (the franchise) sells this Summer – in terms of all of the new merchandise – before they decide if there’s enough money to warrant going forward with the script that was commissioned last year.
Hoping for production to start in the fall huh? Greenlight in Juneish eh? Comic Con in July you mumble?
Lets just say I don’t think Mr. Aykroyd will be “canceling” this year.
IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAAAAAAAAY….YEEEEE YEEEE YEEEEAAAH…
*That picture above the post is priceless Chris ;P…
*Cheers.
*More current GB3 “Dan speak” on WBCN [audio podcast]…
*Cheers.
I love this plan, let’s do it !!!
I agree with Paul R. My hunch is that what hinges on them going ahead is the success and interest (numbers/money) in the game in June. That’s no coincidence. Which when you consider the Dev Blog, its almost the OPPOSITE of game + movie franchise. In this case, the game is the driving factor to support the film. The theory is a stretch surely, but like the blog said, interest in the game has helped refuel interest in the franchise and third movie. So it falls in line that that ACTUAL success on the again will further stoke the interest fires of the next GB film.
That said, I understand the concern about tarnishing the GB mindset we all have from the first film. Its a concern of mine that holds even for the new game ( a rapidly diminishing one at that) But something worth considering in all this, to perhaps calm the worries of them ruining the feel and gestalt of GB, remember this — from the get go with the game, everyone, Aykroyd included, knew the first GB movie contained the heart and set the tone. It was the standard. Something i think everyone realized in hindsight. So if everyone on board KNOWS that the first GB is canon now, I dont think that a third movie could be that much more off than GB2… if anything, maybe, MAYBE, it will reign that distance in a little bit. Who knows. Fuck, this may likely never even SEE the light of day! Heh…
My thoughts on GB3 have always remained the same over the years. “HELL YES DO IT.” And even though this may not even get off the ground… I can’t help but shake the feeling that I don’t want a “Next Generation Ghostbusters” a movie designed only to setup a new group of Ghostbusters for cashing in a bit on the franchise in the years to come.
My worst fear is Indy 4 or the New Star Wars trilogy being repeated. But I’m also trying to keep in mind that Lucas has managed to keep his dirty rotten mass marketing hands off Ghostbusters
So a little part of me is kind of hoping that this doesn’t go anywhere. Which is strange for me since I’ve always supported the development of a sequel since ‘89.

I would imagine that the sales of the video game will factor somewhat in to Sony’s decision as to whether they make GB3 – I’ll be purchasing the game for my PC and for DS probably – and maybe for 360 later on.
Also, to put all your minds at rest – I don’t think they would be making a new GB movie just for it to be no good. Even though there are new writers I am sure it will be great! I mean, look at how wonderful the video game has turned out to be – Sony is taking great care to make sure that GB gets the best treatment it can. My hopes are high that the film will follow that same ideal (should it be made.)
I already knew that Ghostbusters 3 will be here in 2010 and this Wonderful Information prooves that. I looked on the GB3 Imdb and it has the Crew on the board but not the cast yet. The GB3 cast should be up there shortly. All I can say is Kingpin,AJQuick, and Rockstar your full of shit! I told you aholes that I was right! Who was wrong not me but YOU WERE WRONG! I told you guys Thousands of times that in 2010 GB3 will be happening and you didn’t belive me. You guys are paying for this big time because the Imdb doesn’t lie and neither do I! I came I read,I kicked your ass! It’s going to happen and the movie will kick your ass! in 2010!! Told Ya!
A Ton of Bricks fell on your heads Kingpin,AJQuick and Rockstar because I was telling all of you the truth!
I think alot of you are thinking too far ahead. Not wanting a 3′rd film in case it blows or not.
Well, all I have to say is if you don’t waint a GB3 that’s fine. But for the people who do, don’t ruin it.
Let GB3 get made for the people who have been praying for years for it. And if it doesn’t meet up with your HIGH standards, ignore it. Make believe it doesn’t exist and it it isn’t part of the true cannon.
But don’t punish the people who want to see it made.
As I was saying…your all thinking too far ahead. You haven’t seen a script, budget or even cast list. So you don’t even know if it will not rock or it WILL. So, calm down.
I read just about everything you all said and for once, I can agree with both sides: I’m keeping my head cold enough but knowing Dan the Man talked a bit about it means he had something to talk about… nothing solid, but just enough to get us a bit started, I think…
I for one have been waiting for this movie since 1992 or better yet, 1994.
I’ve been let down too many times before. Until I’m in the theatre and Ghostbusters 3 starts playing I won’t be excited.
All i gotta say is If bruce willis can make another die hard movie which was actally pretty good and true to the first then ghostbusters can. There are so many stupid movies that get sequals ghostbusters 2 sucked and they need to make a third to make up for that. Its lonnnggg overdue but i think with the right script it could be AWESOME!
I believe it’s harder to make a good GB movie then another “Die Hard”-Sequel… If you want “Die Hard” being good, make a real cool action movie and put Willis in, but making a GB movie means you have to do a masterpiece, otherwise people will kick ya… The first one was much more then one of the typical cult classics of the 80’s…
If this does get made I’m praying they get it right as I’m sure all of you are as well. I would love to see a third movie that has a heavy focus on the GBs lives and the business side of things and wraps up, like the 1st one, with some great threat to nyc and the world. I thought gb2 only slightly scratched the surface of their lives post-saving the world and itd be cool if they had a more PG-13 feel with an edge (while keeping it fun and lighthearted to be sure) than the GB2 watered-down predictable PG script. I also wouldnt mind if they treated it as though GB2 never happened and just named it something other than GB3.
Shut up Jon, GB2 doesn’t deserve to be forgotten in the canon.
I don’t mean to feed the troll, but LOL @ “the Imdb doesn’t lie”.
At this point, obviously things could still go awry, but I’m hopeful. I imagine the game will generate a lot of interest in the franchise again and that’s right about the time Dan Aykroyd wants the script to be green lit. It seems like that’s not a coincidence. All I can say now is that if they do go ahead and do a third film, I hope it’s good. But doesn’t everybody? =P
Exactly. Nobody wants to see this movie tank, Nobody. We all just want to see something cool again. So I say, lets be psyched for the game, which we know is coming for sure, and then, in the meantime, we can keep that excitement for the film simmering… and when the day comes we see a movie trailer? We let it roll to a boil!!
Something else came to mind… We are well past the late 80s early 90s… Ever notice that when people recreate settings and time periods, they tend to overcompensate to account for really placing the viewer in the era… So hopefully, when and if they go back to recreate the “feel” of the original movie, we’ll see some of that old feeling from the first flick
Bricks have fallen on my head.. GB3 in 2010!!1!
Well I will be asking about it on Tuesday in Nashua!!!
I’m glad it is getting made… finally!
To the haters who don’t want to tarnish their “precious memories” of the 80s here’s my advice: don’t watch the movie. It’s that simple. No need to complain. Your memories will be safe. Just don’t watch it.
In response to Superstarseven, GB2 was trash. We all know this. Bill Murray even admitted it – he said the original script for that movie was completely warped in the interest of banking on the franchise’s popularity with children. I say stay true to the writers’ vision and make a quality movie that appeals to everyone not just lil kids. I personally wouldnt mind them just going PG13 with it since I imagine the majority of ghostheads these days are in their 20s and 30s (myself being 25). Realistically though I just want a movie I can enjoy wholeheartedly.
Aykroyd: Well right now I’ve got the two writers that have been engaged by Sony to put together the script they work on the Office and they just did this fantastic comedy that’s going to go out from Harold Ramis called Year One…. So these guys are writing that, and they’re going to write the Ghostbusters. Hopefully they’ll have a draft by June, which will enable us to maybe shoot by the late Fall.
Q: Now there’s a rumor that it won’t be the original cast playing the Ghostbusters, but a young like Seth Rogen–
Aykroyd: No, we’re all in it, we’re all in it.
Q: Oh you are?–so Bill Murray has agreed?
Aykroyd: Yes, he has. But we are, you know, handing the torch to the next generation, in other words, We’re training the cadets, as it were.
Q: Now could you see the Ghostbusters franchise moving on without you guys in it? Would that be something–
Aykroyd: I hope so, I hope so, sure. I hope after this one that there’ll be enough strength with the younger players to take it to the next generation, sure why not.

We all know this huh? Look, dislike GB2 all you want, but its comments like that that piss me off.

I got an idea why not the original ghostbusters do one more major case then after that retire and pass the torch to the next generation.I hope it turns out like the video game because I like the storyline and the rookie ghostbuster. In the movie he should talk though but this is just an idea.
I don’t know if anyone noticed but Ain’t It Cool News TOTALLY ripped off PC’s story about GB3 without crediting it to PC….Shameless…
Went to Dan’s NH bottle signing today, and I had to ask him about the rumors, considering the Boston Globe interview and all. I asked ” What about this fall Dan?” he responded ” I hope so man, I hope so”. Not really the answer I was looking for, but the guy was as nice and personable as you could ask for so I left satisfied. Took time to talk to you, and take pictures if you had a camera. Real class act.
