Following on the heels of last week’s online chat assertion that a third Ghostbusters script will be done by June, and with luck production to follow, Dan continues to talk up a third Ghostbusters by 2010. This time he sat down with Boston’s Toucher and Rich of 104.1FM, and verified that Bill Murray is in, and the Next Generation plotline is still the intent. [Via Steven Hough]

Oh this is great(sarcasm). I actually was happier when it wasn’t going to happen. It wouldn’t sound as bad if they weren’t going to “pass the torch”, and it became even scarier when they started talking about future movies without the originals.
I have to say that I am optimistic. In Hollywood things can fall apart faster than you can blink, so the chances of any of this happening are always slim. But if done right,m this could be great. I have no problem with a handing of the torch situation as long as its actors whom are age appropriate(ie no kid Ghostbusters lol) I understand Dan wanting this to continue even without the original actors because it was the actors that held up a 3rd movie for so long to a degree, and really lets be honest whom here wouldn’t want to create something that continues on long after them. Dan may have hopes of being a type of Gene Roddenberry persona in that his creation lives on in many incarnations over the years.
And really the argument for and against a third movie is the same argument every time there was a new incarnation of Star Trek. When Next Generation premiered no one thought it would last because it was a different cast. But if you get the tone right, and the concept right, hey why not?
Until I hear that its actually greenlit and in pre- production, its nice to think about, but nothing to get in a tizzy over, although I will say…if you hear they’re looking for a graphic artist to help with production, let me know would ya?
Well, I really want to remain optimistic. Its new writers, a fresh take, and he stressed that its not a “Rogen adventure” that they’re all returning… Im curious to wait and see how this pans out. And really, lets not get snobby over this… two years ago, any of us would have traded our left nut just to see a proton pack fire on the big screen one more time…even if no one was wearing it. I say relax and just be excited that there is the potential for something new and great. AGAIN, remember how much RESPECT was given when producing the game… Does anyone think that will all just go out the window when it comes to third movie?
“remember how much RESPECT was given when producing the game… Does anyone think that will all just go out the window when it comes to third movie?”
That’s a VERY good point Anthony : )
I think it’s important to remember that the only reason Bill Murray is on board for a 3rd movie is because of the game. He was holding out for so long because in his eyes (and others) Ghostbusters II was a disappointment. If they can get Murray to turnaround after all this time, then it’s likely that going forward with a third movie is going to be a worthwhile endeavor.
I think this could turn out great. If the original cast pass the torch, the new movies could focus on the new guys. And hopefully the original cast will continue voicing the games.
They have another 23 years to catch up to a movie that would happen next year. Plenty of space to fill in with fun stories.
Patrick approved… ha! Too funny.
Well this sounds really Awesome! I’ve heard on other reports that Ghostbusters 3 is a go and that’s Wonderful so by June GB3 will be a go and filming will began with the Original GB’s Training a new team to help them out and in 2010 GB3 will be in Theaters so things are looking up Great! I told you guys that I was right!
I can’t WAIT to c GB3 on the big screen. When done right-(T2,Die Hard 4,Lethal Weapon 4,etc.)-a sequal can be fantastic. No matter what film franchise, any sequal in that given series will never capture the complete magic as the original. Just the way it is. That doesn’t mean a sequal can’t be a good film on it’s own right. So GB2 wasn’t the greatest second film in film series history. That’s no reason to bash GB3 when we haven’t even seen a script, story sypnosis or cast list. We have to face the facts, time has gone by and the original GB’s are getting a tad old. Nothing wrong with passing the torch if the talent is right for the series. It’s refreshing and gives the series longevity. Just because the torch get’s passed in no way mean’s that the film,or subsequent films latter in the series will falter. We can’t be selfish and falsely believe that the original dream team can continue forever. Let’s be realistic. I for one am very excited to see what they come up with.
With the game, RGB DVD set,new fig’s,the Blu-Ray’s,etc. This is a very exciting time and I am, flying high.
Look forward to more GB3 news.
Long time lurker, rare poster here….It seems to me from the tidbits of information gathered from trailers/interviews/etc is that the video game is basically an adaptation of Aykroyd’s original GB3 script…at least as far as creating a portal to the spirit world/hell. The whole “next generation” aspect seems to have been dropped (witht he exception of the rookie) for the game and instead seems to be in place for a third film. At least that’s my understanding.
I for one am excited beyond all comprehension!! If there’s more movies to come that means I still have a chance to be a Ghostbuster on the big screen!! And I know all of you will cut me to pieces for what I’m saying or how I’m saying it but I don’t care! I am a Ghostbuster, I will always be a Ghostbuster and if I could be on screen as a Ghostbuster I would cream my jeans!! Besides me being in it I can’t wait to see what Seth Rogan brings to the table, he is a funny dude just like Bill, Harold, and Dan. Pineapple Express was great and with that performance, along with his others, I can totally see Seth throwing proton streams at and catching bad ass spooks with attitude and grace. I bless this film and wish to see it made… NOW MAKE IT!

Ten years ago I felt very differently about Ghostbusters III but now I will be extremely surprised if this movie does not end up disappointing the fans.
I fear Ghostbusters will become the victim of becoming a film series in which each movie gets progressively worse and that it’ll finish on a sour note with all the life squeezed out of it.
Sometimes it is just better to leave things in the past rather than resuscitating them. I fear a disappoining and undignified end to Ghostbusters.
Neat
Same story we have heard since the last 90s but minor details changed. We shall see what comes of it
the last 90s? You mean the 1990s, as opposed to the 1890s?
ahahaa…typo…duh
But you are hilarious…
*shudders* They are going to destroy our beloved franchise!
No, this is a great idea. I mean, it’s not like the original ghost busters want to bust ghosts all their lives. They Have to pass the torch. Remember the quote from Harvey Dent In The Dark Knight? ” You either die a hero, or Live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” or something like that. Nothing to do with the GB’s. Im just making a point. Nobody wants to see Bill Murrary with a walker and proton pack.
And to Stayinpuft. Are you 12? “destroy our beloved Franchise?” wtf, it’s called progress; Change for the better. Get over it, It’s not like your opinion matters anyway. Oh, wait. the phone’s ringing……. It’s for you, Dan says he wants your opinion on the new film. Oh, sorry, he hung up.
Well, I BELIEVE that the cartoons killed the franchise. They covered every posible story in the show, so now i doubt there will be something new…and we haven´t seen tha game, hope it doesn´t make it boring.b ut i would love to see the gbs again.

Here’s a text transcription that I just did, in case anyone is interested.

Interviewer: Now, Dan Aykroyd, one of the things that you’ve done that has made people very happy are the Ghostbusters films, and everyone is talking about the possibility of a third Ghostbusters film. Is this something that is a reality?
Dan: Well, right now I’ve got the two writers that have been engaged by Sony to put together the script. They work on The Office and they just did this fantastic comedy that’s gonna go out from Harold Ramis called “Year One”. It’s basically the Book of Genesis adapted into a movie.
Interviewer: Jack Black. We saw the commercial during the Super Bowl.
Dan: Yeah, it’s really funny. It’s hilarious. In the movie its Jack Black and his partner and – who do they partner up with? Who’s their best buddy in the movie? Caine! [both laugh] It’s great! So these guys are writing that, and they’re gonna write the Ghostbusters. Hopefully they’ll have a draft by June, which will enable us to maybe shoot by the late Fall.
Interviewer: There’s a rumor that it won’t be the original cast playing the Ghostbusters, but a young – like Seth Rogan…
Dan: No, we’re all in it, we’re all in it.
Interviewer: Oh, you are? So Bill Murray has agreed?
Dan: Yes, he has, but we are handing the torch to the next generation. In other words, we’re training the cadets, as it were.
Interviewer: Could you see the Ghostbusters franchise moving on without you guys in it? Would that be something you’d…
Dan: I hope so. I hope so. Sure. I hope after this one they’ll be enough strength with the younger players to take it to the next generation. Sure, why not?
