While Sony’s announcement earlier in the month that they would be publishing the Playstation versions of the Ghostbusters video game, and that a PSP version was coming, it was never clear what the release scope of that PSP port would be. Gamespot spoke to Atari CEO David Gardner, and confirmed that the PSP would make its way to North America, hopefully before Christmas 2009. For the whole article, read here.

If Sony is smart, they’ll bundle the old Ghostbusters movie UMD with the PSP version. Sure the UMD is no match for the DVD, much less the Blu Ray, but I think both make for a nice bundle. Throw in a PSP skin, or even a special Ghostbusters-themed “slime green” PSP unit, and you’ve got a nice bundle. If they’re going to make PSP owners wait so longer for the game (which will undoubtedly be a PS2 port), they might as well make it worth it for them. And for the record, I don’t own a PSP, so I get no benefit from these ideas I’m throwing out
I don’t think UMDs are still being produced so I don’t see that happening. Sony hasn’t pressed any in awhile.
Has there been any talk of what the PSP game will be? I’m pretty sure it’s just going to be a PS2 port but I really haven’t been able to find any news on it.
Matt – That’s what I would have thought, too, but the SPHE Publicity site lists a UMD release of “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” for May 12th and “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” for May 19th, and the Ghostbusters UMD is still listed in their active catalog (unlike the three RGB DVDs), so I take that to mean that they’re still making them – just not as many title as they first did.
Kevin – There hasn’t been an official announcement on what the PSP game will be, but a few fans conclude that it’ll be a PS2 port. It won’t be a DS port due to the PSP not having the two screens and touch sensitivity. The PSP isn’t as powerful as the PS3, Xbox 360, or even a PC capable of running the game, so that eliminates the “realistic version” (as I call it). For obvious reasons it won’t be a Wii port, and there’s no time to put together a completely new version, so that leaves a PS2 port as the only choice.
It makes sense as there have been a bunch of PSP games that made their way onto the PS2: the GTA “Stories” games, Twisted Metal: Head-On, Silent Hill Origins, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters – and I think one or two others. So with some tweaking, they could (presumably) easily port the other way around, from PS2 to PSP.
They may not produce UMDs for the game, intending instead to offer it through PSN. Or both, meaning they can minimize the number of UMDs they have to produce.
I’m in the same camp as Paul on this one. probably a Ps2 port. Really what else can they do this late in the game?
I own a PSP and if they release it through PSN instead of a retail UMD I will not purchase it. Because anybody else to uses their PSP will know that you have to store data on a memory stick. And an entire game on a memory stick will easily take up an entire gig. And personally, I do not want to use that much space on one of my memory sticks for one whole game.
