Jason wrote in to say that he went out and picked up the region 4 Extreme Ghostbusters DVD, with the first 13 episodes, and was happy he did;
I just wanted to let you know that I got my Region 4 “Extreme Ghostbusters” 2-disc DVD set in the mail yesterday. I’ve got a region-free player, and pre-ordered the set from Australia as soon as I saw your story about it weeks ago. As expected, there are no real extras to speak of, but it does contain the first 13 episodes of the series with impressive video and sound quality. No one who is a GB fan and owns an all-region DVD player should be on the fence about buying this. Get it now so we can get the rest of the episodes released. Or so we can show Sony there is enough interest for a Region 1 DVD set.
Well, I’m certainly considering it – Jason got his with no hassles via EasyDVD for $15 (Australian?)

I am intrigued. Is this a legitimate release? If so, then why no release in the US?
Of course it’s a legitimate release. It’s released by Sony, which will release it in Europe latter this month (as well as the first volume of The Real Ghostbusters, in a release that depressingly excludes all extras found on the US DVDs).
I don’t get this, just because it’s something published outside of the US, does it make it automatically suspicious or possibly illegitimate?
By being Region-Anything, it’s automatically legitimate, as pirates don’t bother with region encoding, they release them region free.

Vandal’s point is not a bad one, and it’s a natural question, as many things release elsewhere tend to start with a release in the US first. But what most don’t get is that even for an international corporation, the territories are divided up seperately, and each one makes their own calls based on their environment. EGB was syndicated around the world, and someone has done the math and decided that a DVD release is worth the effort, but not as much in the US.
Alternately, this EU release is a test to see if perhaps there is a market in the US. It’s hard to say exactly why it’s going out abroad before North America, but it’s not unreasonable.
Disappointing? Totally.
I´m interested. Where can I buy it? Mexico is region 4 too.
My question had nothing to do with country but with past experience! Before the Real Ghostbusters sets were available there were many knock-off season sets available online. As a result, I am wary of releases that don’t seem immediately tangible to me. Sorry! Didn’t mean to cause any offense.
Wait, I thought I heard it was coming out this fall to America. November maybe. It’s not?
Just a reminder: North America uses the NTSC video format, this Australian release is in the PAL format. So besides a region-free player, you also need to make sure that either the player can output/convert PAL to NTSC or that you have a television capable of viewing the PAL format.
I don’t think a computer monitor cares about PAL or NTSC, so if you have region-free software on your computer, you should be okay.
this took me completely buy surprise today, i was a big fan of the show in the 90s never thought it was popular enough for a dvd and i saw it just sitting on a shelf in target(like wall mart, dunno if you have target over there) just sitting there for 12.50 not only was it really cheap but why is my country the first to get it, im really grateful as we get absolutely nothing first (rock band 2 still hasnt been released) but why us?
An error may occur when playing a DVD disc with a region code,Here I would like to tell you How to PLay Different Region DVD Movies on Mac.
