These days, the internet is full of Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis talking about Ghostbusters – like like it’s 1999, all over again! Thanks to Ali and Clay for the linkage.
Here, Dan Aykroyd talks a bit about the game and a lot about the possible third movie;
(note: I’ve played the level in that last shot. The door wasn’t covered like that – I wonder if the footage is from an older version of the game?)
Here, Harold Ramis talks a bit about the game and a lot about the possible third movie, only in text, not video;
What are your thoughts on the new Atari Ghostbusters game?
Harold Ramis: As soon as they started showing us animatics of what they wanted to do I thought this was really cool. There was something intimately flattering about having our real images in the game looking what we used to look like, which is more than flattering. It seemed quite natural. And the possibility that there’d be realistic dialogue recorded with our voices. Of course, you can’t invest the kind of time to make it a full-blown comedy, the game is more action than comedy. But the fact that it could have comic moments and the kind of funny ironic attitude that the movie had married to a state-of-the-art action game seemed like a great possibility.

Passing of the torch? Idk how I feel about that, but I won’t make any assumptions until this movie is made and after I’ve seen it opening night.
Doesn’t seem like Harold thinks much of the Real Ghostbusters show or standard 2-d Animation in general.
Damn. Another awesome couple of interviews. I have to say though, I’m really wishing the parties involved couldn’t have come to an agreement to get a film off the ground 10 years ago. I’m not really down with the whole Oscar thing. Finding a 22-year old actor who doesn’t come off as obnoxious is a pretty hard thing to do. All of the original GB’s were well into their 30′s when Ghostbusters came out and their experience is a big part of what made them so endearing. (Both as actors as well as where the characters were at that point in their lives).
I just don’t want this film to feel like Space Cowboys or something.
I like what Dan had to say. If they get the wrote tone, director, well written script and RIGHT actor to play the older Oscar and he is the one person that starts/heads the next generation of GB’s, it could work. With daddy Venkman and his original GB pals helping along the way. I kinda see where Dan is going with this. And yes, it just may work. But this concept is the type where they have to be VERY careful in how the execute. They need to get it just right, or it could come off VERY corny, or worse! Be careful! Not so sure about the Ghostbusters not being around anymore than being “needed” again. They used that concept in GB2. Though, this time it’s under different circumstances. They shut themselves down because they rid the world of all major paranormal activity. Whereas in GB2 they were just BANNED from practicing busting. That part may work, may not. Once again…they have to be careful and get it right.
I’ve got real faith in these guys to put forth a 3rd movie that does the original justice. It’s been a long time since the 2nd, they’ve had a lot of time to take in all the critiques and think over what could be the next great, and possibly final chapter of the series.
So to Ramis, Aykroyd and the crew I say, “I’m ready to believe you!”
I like the Oscar GB2 link idea loads! But I do agree that the GB’s being out of action having cleaned up the town is too similar to GB2. Doesn’t the new game have them as the fourth emergency service? I think that’s the way to go and Oscar could be recruited to help the older GB’s. As others have said, Oscar needs to be very carefully chosen.
This is clearly a terrible idea. They are just going to rehash ghostbusters starting over, make it a remake so they don’t destroy something great. Nobody wants to see todays flavor of the month actors pretending to be ghostbusters. This is really one of the worst ideas I’ve ever heard and Aykroyd is tied into it. This ruined my day.
I wish it could be more like the game. I have faith in the guys though. I think they know how important this movie is and GBs in general. By the way, the game is amazing and feels like a 3rd movie!
Does anyone have Aykroyd contact info? Like a fan email he has. Even if there is only a .001% chance he reads mail from fans it is better then no chance at all. He needs to know how terrible of an idea this is and that the passing the torch gimmick has never worked in the history of cinema.
Actually, I kinda like what Aykroyd had to say, this is the first time I haven’t been totally turned off by GB3
And I was kind of against the Oscar thing for a long time, but now that I think about it a bit more… If the crap hits the fan and Oscar is still a big part of Venkman’s life, logically I think he would be the first person the team would consider to strap on a 20+ Year old Proton Pack.
I do agree though, You have to be VERY careful not to make that really cheesy.
“Don’t Cross the Streams Son.”
“OK DAD, GEEZ.”
*Insert Laugh Track*
Dan Aykrod said exactly what I have about Oscar for years! His thoughts on the subject only help validate my GB film.
It’s gonna be a tough ride! Whatever they do will please some and upset others. Personally, I trust Dan to make GB3 great. The current “Oscar” idea is quite eloquent and will help bridge such a massive gap nicely. I can really see this movie working but it will rest almost entirely on the writing and the casting.
Well your film would be terrible. I assure you that GB3 will be bad if it is made like this. Thankfully I don’t think Murray will sign on for it and it wont get made.
Like I said before Ghostbusters the videogame isn’t Ghostbusters 3. There is going to be a Ghostbusters 3 in 2012. The Imdb doesn’t lie at all and here it is:www.Imdb.com/title/tt1289401. Dan said before that Sigourney will be in GB3 and she is and early reports has said that everyone has signed on to make Ghostbusters 3. At the end of this report Dan talks about passing the torch and he talks about Oscar Dana’s Son from GB2 and see with that Info. there will be a GB3 and Dana’s Son will be a new trainer to fight the ghosts in GB3!
With other reports about Ghostbusters 3 it says that the movie is moving forward and Sony does want to make the third movie.
You people complaining about it being another GB2 are simply ridiculous. If you hated GB2 so much, why have you been waiting for ANOTHER sequel? This isn’t the Foundation series, it’s just a horror-comedy. You people who want the 2nd and 3rd and so on to be some mind-blowing work of originality should just read or watch something else.
The passing the torch gimmick has never worked in film. NOT ONCE. HEAR ME! NOT ONCE! NOT ONCEEE! Because it is forced and relies on a character being created to contend and compete with an already legendary character. People are attracted to the franchise because they are interested in certain characters, not because they want to give a talentless hack a shot at being good. Who here really loves the series because the characters catch ghosts with proton packs? It is interesting but if it was the 40 year old virgin crew doing it it would’ve been left in the 80′s and forgotten. The fans have been waiting to see the characters come back, not people catching ghosts or chasing them. The concept is interesting but without the talent its just a generic run of the mill idea. Like ghost hunters except with proton packs.
Said it before and I’ll say it again, Oscar is the logical way to tie it all back in. I’m VERY curious to see what’s going to be happening in the coming months.
Lol, someone Trusts Imdb?! That date is nothing more than a guess by a user. Not even close to factual. Ghostbusters III is still not offcially happening yet. I am waiting to film shots come out before I’ll believe. Does anyone remember Ghostbusters III (Hellbent)? That was being pushed from the late 90′s til the early 2000′s. *Sigh*

Yeah, what was that about? If you read the whole review with Ramis, he really rips into RGB as something that “just kept kids entertained for a half-hour.” Jeez.
RGB doesn’t hold a candle to the original movie(s). If you think about it, it’s just a TV show that has the no-ghost sign stamped on it and thus is a must-see/have to any “diehard” GB fan. I mean, what the heck is so great about that show?
BTW, my attitude towards the show is simply based on the Stay-Puft-cover-DVD release (Spooky Spirits?) and the first 3 episodes on the Vol. 1 DVD set. It’s a good show, but it’s not some AWESOME thing or whatever…
TTop33 I understand where you are coming from, but the fact of the matter is, is that this is Aykroyd and Ramis’s franchise and they can do whatever they want with it. I for one will see a 3rd movie regardless of what the plot is or if there are four female busters or whatever it ends up being. Aykroyd has mentioned the passing of the torch idea several times so I believe that’s what we will end up with. As for Murray being on board, this movie won’t be made without him, so if it’s made he’ll be in it, Dan has admitted that Bill Murray is the main reason the franchise is what it is. I’ll take what we are given from the brains of the Original GB’s and enjoy it no matter what. If you don’t like the idea, don’t buy a ticket, I’m sure there will be plenty of Ghostheads out there that will.
I’m definitely a fan of the films first and foremost as well, but some of the writing on the show – especially the first season, was quite strong. I actually preferred the explanation of what happened to the GB’s post-gozer in the Citizen Ghost episode more than the history that they came up with in GB2. That’s one thing that’s always bugged me about the second movie – they didn’t show the containment unit once.
I still say that featuring Oscar in GB3 is a lousy idea. – Unless he’s some fat-ass who’s good at pratfalls and Chris Farleyisms, I’ll most likely spend the length of the movie wanting to punch him in the teeth – like I do with most 20-year-olds out there.

So obviously, you’ve never watched an episode of the show. You have no right to comment on it, then. The first season alone is one of the best written animated shows in the history of TV. So what’s your argument?

Yeah, exactly, Shut up.
If they are casting out of the Judd Apatow stable of actors for an early 20′s actor, two that pop into my mind would be Michael Cera(Year One, Superbad) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad, Role Models). IMO I’d like Mintz-Plasse, he seems like he pulls of the, “Science Nerd” really well and he was funny as hell as McLovin and in Role Models. You never know though Michael Cera has had some quality time with Year One’s director Harold Ramis being a lead in that film. I don’t really know of too many other early 20′s actor/comedians, any other’s come to mind?
Ok, I guess I’m not a fan of cartoons. The writing was Ok, may be the best for animation, but the movies are far better. The Stay Puft character is more detailed looking for one thing. If the cartoon was where we first saw the SPMM I don’t think he’d be the great image many of us remember…and what are you saying? That the first 3 episodes are not indicative of the entire show? Or is there some continuity thing I missed out on not sitting through 7 years of television?
As soon as Dave Coulier entered the picture, I got the hell outta there. RGB was officially ruined from that point onward.

See, this is one of those problems with all of the bandwagon fans who either only recently discovered the franchise or overall you’re one of those casual fans who now is pretending he’s been die-hard all these years. Normally I wouldn’t come out and complain, but your ignorance and your stupidity is only more prevalent when you say things like
“That the first 3 episodes are not indicative of the entire show? Or is there some continuity thing I missed out on not sitting through 7 years of television?”
What kind of person judges a television show that was on as long as RGB based on 3 episodes of a Best-Of DVD compilation from years ago? Those weren’t even the first 3 episodes, so I don’t know what you’re driving it.
It’s people like you that made this community what it is today, which honestly makes me to say I’m embarrassed I’ve been a part of it for as long as I have.
Next time, before you run your mouth, make sure you’re at least able to back up your claim. All you did here was make yourself look like a complete fool.
I saw the first 3 episodes from the Vol. 1 (Season 1?) DVD set. I also saw one of the “best of” DVDs, or at least most of it. I’m not pretending to be a die-hard, I don’t even claim to be a die-hard; if I was claiming to be a die-hard, I would be ashamed of thinking anything with the Ghostbusters logo on it has anything negative about it, and thus wouldn’t be posting these comments.

Even if you’re not a die-hard, you still have no right since you have no backing. All you’re doing is digging the hole deeper. Legitimately watch a season or two before you even write it off. Opinions can be formulated from an educated view, not from seeing a couple of episodes then spitting out a crock about it just being another animated show.
It’s a well known fact that mediocrity rules this planet, or at least this country (the USA). Children are even more susceptible to mediocrity, and children were the primary target audience for RGB, especially later in the series. And even if it started out as a GREAT show, there are TONS of long-long-running shows (the Cosby Show, Full House etc.) that started out quite enjoyable and then got annoying to anyone with taste b/c people couldn’t let go of the series. So why does the fact that it’s a 7-year-running-TV-show make it more important to watch more of the show? I’ve asked this before, and this is the last time I’ll ask: Does the show get better than the first 3 episodes on the Vol. 1 DVD set? I mean, was it a shaky first few episodes and then it somewhere along the line found its footing or what? You demand (rather politely I must say) that i back up my opinion, then you can’t even answer a basic question. Are you afraid answering it will prove me right?
Johnathan, if you’re using Full House and the Cosby Show as your examples, then it doesn’t say much for your taste.
As for your opinion of the show, it’s very sad and I’d like to know how old you are and whether or not you grew up with the show. You seem to just have a prejudice towards animation and assuming it’s awful. Also, I’m still not sure what Volume 1 DVD you’re talking about. But anything produced from 1986-1988 in the series is very popular amongst fans and it was one of the more sophisticated animated series ever made.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Sean William Scott would make a great Oscar/GB.
