As of late August, a third script for Ghostbusters 3 had not yet been completed, according to Dan Aykroyd;
“As (‘Ghostbusters’ director) Ivan Reitman says – and I quote him now – ‘It’s all just talk,”‘ Aykroyd said.
“That’s pretty much what we can say. Until we can see a script, until we have casting, until we’ve got a production number,” he added before trailing off. “I’m the biggest cheerleader. I think it’s going to happen, but really it’s just theory until the production number is stamped.”
But all that has now changed as of last Friday, when Dan Aykroyd revealed he had in his possession the new draft for the third film, a fact mentioned in passing, without fanfare, as Aykroyd spoke to Baltimore press during his recent Crystal Head vodka promotional stop;
I’m going to see the script in the next few hours, I’m about to read the third script, I’ve been submitted it and we’ll see what happens.
Thanks to Andreas for the link – now we just have to wait and see if he likes it… and if Reitman likes it, and Murray likes it, and if Ramis likes it, and the studio likes it, and then if they can get the cast scheduled, and then if the studio greenlights it… then we might finally have a third movie.
Haha yeah, still seems like a false alarm to me.
I´m afraid about the “passing the torch” idea… I´d love to see it happening, but I have my doubts.

Of course the Ghostbusters 3 script will be good! The Writers from the office are rewriting the GB3 Hellbent script that Dan and Harold wrote. I assume that GB3 will remain as a Hellbent movie!
At this point I don’t even care. Let us not tarnish the first movie any further by producing more sequels. The game was satisfactory enough for me.
I’m pretty sure when he says ‘Third script’ he means ‘the script to the third film’, not the amount of drafts it’s gone through.
Patrick… from what Aykroyd and Ramis have said in interviews, the current script is a completely different story than HELLBENT.

Awesome news. I hope it’s up to par. There’s a bit of trepidation involved in knowing that an outside resource was responsible for this iteration… instead of Dan and Harold.
It’s interesting how much play-by-play is available to fans of just about anything nowadays. We get to know about all of this pre-planning. I remember being totally surprised and excited when I saw the trailer for GB2 in the theatre. I had no idea a sequel was even coming!
I think I’d be happy to see another film, even a “passing the torch” kind of thing. Whatever it takes to to get the original cast together again one last time.
By the sound of things, everybody has high standards for the script. If something gets made, I’m betting it’ll be good.
I’m expecting Ghostbusters III to be a movie which is not only extremely predictable but unoriginal too.
I just don’t think that there’s enough juice left in it to warrant another film.
The idea of watching new members join the team feel too predictable for words and it’ll just feel like retracing old steps.
I think this’ll be a very disappointing film. I think it’ll be a poorly written, unfunny movie with an over use of special effects.
The first one was gold and in my humble opinion it should have remained a stand alone film as originally intended.
It doesn’t say third draft (though it would be the third draft) – it doesn’t say he just means the script for the third movie, which is also possible. It’s just Dan talking, so it’s up to the reader. I’m assuming he meant third draft, but that is just an assumption. It’s an assumption either way.
I agree with matthew. It should have ended with the original. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the 2nd one and I’m glad to have enjoyed it as a kid and still today. But the original is so great. If the 3rd is based on the idea of new ghostbusters I won’t be going to see it. I’d rather it be based on the original Ghostbusters years down the road. Ramis got fat…that’s ok. It just means that Egon got fat.
Last year of 2008 when Ghostbusters 3 was new and written by the office writers I heard from Dan and Harold and new Information that the writers from the office were rewriting the GB3 Hellbent script that Harold and Dan wrote. I still assume that GB3 will be a Hellbent movie because in 2007 when GB3 was going to be made in CGI before being made Live-Action dan said that he wrote a script called Hellbent so now being Live-action GB3 will be a Hellbent movie. Some of the Hellbent was used in the videogame and the rest will be used in the movie Hellbent GB3! Remember? It’s still going to be made Ghostbusters 3. Calm Down!!! Dan said eariler this year that everyone has signed on to make GB3 you even had that Interview on here. Summer is almost over and things are looking up for the GB Fans and for Ghostbusters 3! Sony wants to make the third movie and they will after they read the Hellbent GB3 script. There’s new Info. about GB3 on an awesome page but they got the year wrong. they have it released in 2011 but it will be in theaters 2012! Production will began this Winter of 2009! If the script is about passing the torch, I hope it sucks and never gets made. If its a “Seth Rogen vehicle”, then I hope it doesn’t get made. I’m happy with just 2 films in those situatons. But, if its just about the original members, then I’m all for it.
I honestly think we’re more likely to see several more video games than we are to see a third movie, but that’s just my opinion based on how long they’ve been talking about GB3 in comparison to how long it took to get a video game on the market.

I think that trying to make another Ghostbusters film is like trying to squeeze water out of a dry sponge. I just think that the story’s been told and there’s not enough original material left to warrant the making of another film.

As far as the probability of a 3rd Ghostbusters movie- No one knows 100% whether or not until it’s greenlit. End of story. It seems likely,yes. It seems likely to Dan Aykroyd. Fact. Let’s hope. Ghostbusters would have exponentially more magic as a stand alone, yes, but EVERYONE would still want more, no? I think so. Until Sony announces that production has a start date, then GB3 is NOT official, it is still in stuck in development. And it’s been stuck that way for 15 years. It’s not that hard – right now, not official. Once they make an announcement, then it will be official. And things you’ve heard, been told by random people, and stitched together from random crap on the internet, that’s just hearsay.

I have faith Dan and Harold wont let a bad Ghostbusters story come to be…just hearing how highly they regard the first one you can tell they want to do it right and do it for the fans. BUT until I’m paying admission at the premiere I’m not going to concern myself all that much with worrying about a 3rd one…when really the game was 3rd movie enough for me.
