Speaking to the Sun media group, Ivan Reitman has confirmed the third draft script for Ghostbusters 3 is done and he has a copy (just as Dan Aykroyd does) – presumably Harold Ramis has a copy then as well then.
While not commenting directly on the script, Reitman did express optimism that this is the closest it’s ever been to seeing a third film get the greenlight.
He also commented on directing the film, and while it had been suggested in the past that he might not direct, Reitman is now being quite clear on the matter – having directed and produced the first two movies, he feels it’s his right to do the same on the third film.
“For me as a director it would be very hard to let anyone else direct it. I do feel very possessive of it. I’m the sole producer and director of the first two, so I feel it’s both my obligation and my right to do it. But I won’t do it and won’t allow it to happen unless it’s good.”
Also interesting is Reitman’s commenting on the flaws of Ghostbusters 2, though he still says he’s happy with the film.
“We got the first two acts in pretty good shape and then the last act of our story didn’t come up to it. I’m really happy with the movie, but it was certainly not up to the creative level of the first film.”
So, hurtles still remain, but we have a script and nobody is tossing it in the trash. We have at least two of the five parties who have to say yes being very positive on the matter, and another – Sony – putting a lot of time and energy into helping revitalize the franchise with the public (ie new products, the game, Blu-ray release, etc.)
For comparison and perspective, this puts us roughly en par with where we were ten years back, when Dan was pushing the script he and Ramis wrote to Sony/Columbia. Though arguably this is a bit beyond even that, as Sony wasn’t that interested back then, which helped lead to Dan Aykroyd splitting with the company and moving his production offices on the studio lot.
So, no, this is still not party time yet – but boy, it’s about as good a chance as it’s ever been. So, cautious optimism all round, eh?

Alex I don’t understand what the problem is with the Ghostbusters coming back in their late 50s/ early 60s. How exactly does age present a problem? The first two films didn’t require anything which was really what you would call physically exerting so a third one certainly doesn’t have to.
The reason why I think this movie will disappoint is simply due to the fact that they’re going to introduce new Ghostbusters. It will not only completely mess up the perfectly balanced group dynamic that the original four characters have, it’ll put the original characters in the background rather than the foreground and I also think that introducing a new team will mean too many characters. The film will be far too crowded, far too busy. I just don’t think that this will work well at all and in my opinion the chances of this film disappointing massively outweigh the chances of it being a good film.
Well that is your opinion and I see your point. To me personally their ages don’t matter as long as they still act the same way. Egon was probably 40 in the second one and the rest were close to 40. So they were still really old irresponsible people. Plus for Egon and Ray they were irresponsible because they were soo excited about science and didn’t want to be tangled in red tape. Same with Doc Brown who in the first Back to the Future is around their ages now if not older, in the sequel he has some face fixing thing so he doesn’t look as old. He is irresponsible doing dealings for plutonium. As for Peter, his personality is immature so I don’t think it would change.
But I agree Sony would not allow the originals to run the show anyway so we are in for the worst pounding of our lives.
*Sigh*…Yes, everyone has the right to their own opinion. But to point at all your theories and try to pass them as fact that the third film will not work is just too many levels beyond crazy. How do you know the original guy’s will be pushed to the background? How do you know a new group/team will not have that great “group dynamic” that the originals have? Have you seen a screen test or cast list to prove this? I sure haven’t. How do you know the new film will be “too crowded”? Have you read the new script? It’s new writers. Was the recent video game “too crowded” with the one, new Rookie buster? For all you know, they may follow the (somewhat) same flow as the game with testing a new recruit (or two) and see where things lead in the film tarining a new guy, while the rest of the group comes together later, throught the film, or they realize with that one new person, a new group will work. Again, this is all speculation and I wouldn’t dare try to prove that I’m right. Or fact that a new film will or wont work. But all I’m hearing is negativity of how all know how it wont work. Perhaps you could think positive, on how it could? All the thinking is on how it will only work with the “original guys”. We all really need to pull our heads out of the 80′s and schedule a reality check.
Mills said: “a Seth Rogen starring Ghostbusters 3″
LOL!…Stop pulling are chain, and come clean. This is Ivan Reitman isn’t it? Hahaha…you crazy kid, you! Ha…it’s gotta be you. As, you would be the only person (besides Sony), that Rogen has been cast!
Seriously…how do you “know” this? Speculation…speculation…speculation. Whine, whine, whine….
Ryan I didn’t state anything as fact. I am simply stating my opinion and making an educated guess as to how the film will turn out.
I never said that the new team wouldn’t have a good group dynamic. I’m saying that there’s already a well established group dynamic that works and too add characters to that group could mess it up.
I’ve seen enough films to say that too many characters is harmful to a story. I’ve seen many films with unecessary characters. Even one the addition of a single character can upset the balance of a film. Here we’re talking about the addition of possibly four characters.
If they introduce a new team then I think that the old team will be forced into the background because these new characters, their relationship and where they’ve come from will have to be established and in order to do that properly I think that you’d have to put these new characters in the forground and give them more screen time than the originals. Personally that’s not what I want to see.
You cannot compare the recent video game with Ghostbusters III. Yes there was an addition of a new character but he had no story attached to him and not one piece of dialogue. That’s why it didn’t feel crowded. You were basically just watching the four original characters talk to one another. Apart from that with Ghostbusters III we are talking about the addition of not just one but potentially four new people so it’s in no way comparable.
Come on fellahs. Before the actors get too old… let’s do it!
I agree with Matthew in his explanation to Ryan. These are educated guesses we are making here! Ramis and Aykroyd have said they’ll be 3 to 5 new recruits. The writers have proven they suck with Year One. An infant could write a better comedy. They aren’t bringing in 4 new crew members and not explaining them. So what they are going to do is give the originals cameos and try to make these new ghostbusters the main focus. Doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the originals have been established to us before, therefore these four new guys are going to have some dumb character arcs and backgrounds, while the originals are pushed to the back. To pop in from time to time and then disappear. And please everyone here has seen sony at work before. We’ve also seen plenty of other franchises butchered with the passing of the torch gimmick.
Oh Jesus! You guys worry too much. “My childhood would be ruined. My 80′s moment will be lost.” Whatever! Does anyone know exactly what is planned for Ghosbusters 3? anyone anyone…no. Well guess what I don’t know either. I hope you all eat your words.
Josh we do know for a fact that they are indeed writing a story whereby the old characters will be passing the torch to a group of new younger characters.
Nobody’s saying that it will be a bad movie either. We’re just making educated guesses and stating our opinions based on the knowledge that we have.
I think that introducing a new team is at the very least a dangerous idea. It’s been a twenty year wait to see these beloved characters back together again on the silver screen and as soon as they come back they’re replaced! No! I want the old characters to be the main focus. I want the story to concentrate on them. They’re the very reason why I and the vast majority of fans love Ghostbusters in the first place. This is why, in my opinion, Ghostbusters III will be disappointing.
i don’t think all the guys would come back to do a movie only to be pushed into the back ground. i remember an idea about the ghostbusters company becoming a big franchise, so maybe they already have multiple staff members working under them but the story is about how peter, ray winston and egon have to stay on their toes to manage a large company that lets people run around with nuclear accelerators. and then throw in some big paranormal s@#% storm that only they know how to solve.
Add another one on to the My childhood would be ruined. My 80’s moment will be lost comments. “It’s been a twenty year wait to see these beloved characters back together again on the silver screen and as soon as they come back they’re replaced! No!”
I don’t believe the “beloved characters” will just fade out into the background It wouldn’t be financially viable to sell that way, and Sony will realize this. You all just need to relax. I know for a fact all of you as soon as you hear the Proton Pack fire up for the teaser trailer you all will mess your underwear. Again I will end with I hope all of you eat your words.
Im with josh on this 1, yes i am worried that the 3rd instalment wont match up to the 1st 2, but by god i cant wait to see ghostbusters on the big screen! i never got to see the original 2 at the cinema, so for my own, and my 3y/o GB mad son’s sake, i hope it does get greenlit, and that it’s an amazing success!
I find that most of the time the rumors in Hollywood end up being true. It’s very predictable. I know some of you won’t take that as “fact”, and you shouldn’t, but it’s generally true. I remember every rumor about Halloween II, Friday the 13th (remake), and Spider-Man 3 ended up being true. 99% of the rumors about The Dark Knight were true, as well as most of the rumors about Indiana Jones IV. If it doesn’t end up being completely true, alot of the time it’s an idea the studio is tossing around. Nobody started the Seth Rogen thing out of thin air. It’s a legitimate concern. And even if the original Ghostbusters do have a big part in the script, they most likely wont be wearing proton packs, which is the whole point. You want to see those characters, with their unique dynamic, catching ghosts. Not sitting in the firehouse, while the “new” Ghostbusters are out joyriding.
I just don’t see how you can be blindly optimistic when you know the studio who is behind it, you know the writers and what they’ve worked on in the past, and you know what Aykroyd and Ramis are saying. None of it has been good news. It SHOULD be Reitman directed, Aykroyd/Ramis written, and starring the 4 original Ghostbusters. After the fans waiting for almost 20 years, I think we deserve it.
