At the premiere of Fantastic Mr Fox, in which he voices a badger, Bill Murray “exclusively spills the beans on Ghostbusters 3″ – yeah, you and everyone else has the exclusive scoop. And how unsurprising that they all conflict.
Basically, Bill confirms he hasn’t seen a script, he is not committed to doing it until he’s seen a script and is confident that it’s really good. He goes on to say that there is no script, just “a wish-list for someone”, but this just seems to be Bill not being in the know, as Reitman, Aykroyd, and Ramis have all confirmed a script. Alternately, Murray may just be speaking in terms of a green-lit script. Meaning, “there’s no script” equals “a script hasn’t been approved.”
It’s a bit of a step back from all the “Everyone is on-board” talk recently, and it confirms that Bill remains the hardest sell for a third movie.
Thanks, Matthew!

Haha that’s kind of a slap in the face but maybe Bill was just trying to do damage control. It is true that everyone’s kind of experiencing GB3 hysteria and maybe he’s just trying to reign everyone in a bit. Can’t blame him for not wanting to make a shitty movie.
Honestly, this reassures me that if a third move is done, and Bill Murray is involved, it WILL be up to par. I would hate to see a movie filmed just for the sake of filming it. It should have a certian depth to it.
I don’t care what his answer was, he was hilarious in that interview.
Bill is in the same league as Ernie. They’re actors in the movie, not the creative minds behind the production of the film. So its not surprising, Bill nor Ernie have seen the script yet. Dan, Harold, and Ivan are the people that we need to hear from at this early state.
But Bill still seems optimistic about the 3rd film, he’s just hesitant about the quality of the film. he was just stating he hasnt seen the script yet.
Yeah, if this happens, it will be because it’s GOOD. Since that’s the only way to get Bill on board. Especially after the bait-and-switch they pulled on him for GB2 (eliminating from the shooting script everything that sold him on the idea), we’ll be extra weary.
But if Bill wants a really good script, he should step in and offer up the kind of things he wants. That way, he’s satisfied.
Yeah, Bill is being realisitc about it, but not against it, which is a very good sign. He wants quality. If the quality is there, he’ll definitely do it.
I honestly have no problem with this interview.
He basically just says he will do it if its good. If not, he doesn’t need, or want, to do it.
That’s perfectly fine by me.
Aww, it’s good to see him. He looks great there. Hope he will get the GB3 script soon, so they can start shooting it.
I agree with Dr. V… I’m actually a bit relieved to hear him confidently say he won’t do it unless the script is good. Of course Bill did 2 mediocre Garfield movies (this coming from a Garfield strip fan and a Bill fan), but we all know he doesn’t NEED to do a GB3 just for the heck of it, so I’m happy to hear he seems cautious about it (unless he’s just saying that, but still… sounds better than him saying “No matter what the script, I’m in!” … we don’t need an “Evolution 2″)
I think that is a fair analysis. What comes first? The green light or the script?
The script has already been given a thumbs up. Once it is 100% embraced by the studio, Ghostbusters 3 will have a production number and we can all do the dance of joy.
Chad your 100% correct!!! This video was taking thisSummer when the office writers were still writing the GB3 script!! Everybody likes the GB3 script including Bill Murray and Dan,Harold and Ivan said that everyone is in GB3! Sony WILL like the GB3 script to No Doubt! Yeah the GB3 script has given a Thumbs Up! The GB3 script is finished and everyone has a copy of it! Why do you think my #1 Favorite actress Sigourney is back on board because the script is Awesome and after she read it she said ok put me back in! I had a dream about that I met my #1 Favorite actress Sigourney and we talked about GB3 so she read the script liked it a lot then she talked to Harold and Dan and Ivan so my dream came true. When I first heard this I said Thank You Lord and Thank You Sigourney! 2012 GB3 will be here so ther’s no wories Sony will make GB3 for a 2012 release because Sony WILL like the script as well as the Original GB’s and Sigourney and Ivan did!!! Belive me I willdo the dance of Joy by watching Ghostbusters 2 like I did this Sunday!!!
To answer AJ, the script has to come before green lit. If the script’s to everyone’s liking, I imagine that studio will give the production the green light.
Actually, I think in hollywood a project can get a greenlight before the script, but not usually. Particularly in sequels (not this case) they greenlight it AND announce a release date before word one has been written! Not a good thing, but I think it does happen. Of course, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was supposedly the “great” script that got everyone back after years of saying they wouldn’t do it otherwise.
I love you Bill, grew up in the 80s. But stop being a bitch, ghostbusters 1 & 2 were awesome. Everybody knows that. Just stop playing hard to get.
Btw, crystal skull was a great movie. Wish people would stop “insulting ” it.
Patrick, no, see, this is the problem…
This video was taken less than TWELVE HOURS AGO!
The movie premiere he is at happened this evening in London – he was talking to them while North America was just getting up.
http://www.cbc.ca/arts/film/story/2009/10/14/london-film-fest.html
He did NOT say this in the Summer.
You CANNOT just invent facts to support your wishes.
You’ve been doing stuff like this for years now – and it’s this that drives us nuts, not that you think Ghostbusters 3 to happen. We want it, most of us, to happen too. But we’re not prepared to live in a perpetual state of “it’s happening now… no… now! Wait… NOW!… hang on…”
and what about Ivan Reitman’s words? You know, the script approved, everybody onboard…
Bill Murray’s stance on of “I’ll believe it when I see it” on Ghostbusters 3 is pretty much what everyone thinks. Or should think, ya know?
Thank god… Honestly thank god. Aykroyd is desperate, Ramis is a puppet, and Murray is rich enough to do whatever he wants. And he does not want to make a crappy passing the torch flick. He is looking for a good script, and I will trust Murray’s judgement. It’s exciting to hear news that it won’t happen. As long as Murray wants a real reason to get out of the house there is a chance for GB3.
I’ve always used the metaphor that Ghostbusters 3 is like hearing there is a hot chick waiting for you in the back bedroom of a party. You get the news and move towards the back bedroom but as you walk everyone says “Well I think there’s a tranny in that bedroom” It slowly starts to spread that the chick is in fact a dude in that bedroom. You get more and more nervous but are forced to walk to the bedroom. And right when you are turning the knob Bill Murray jumps out and yells “It’s Tranny Run For It!”. Then you escape without opening the door.
“Yeah, if this happens, it will be because it’s GOOD. Since that’s the only way to get Bill on board. Especially after the bait-and-switch they pulled on him for GB2 (eliminating from the shooting script everything that sold him on the idea), we’ll be extra weary.”
If you don’t mind my asking, what was taken from the GB2 script that Bill liked?
“Btw, crystal skull was a great movie. Wish people would stop “insulting ” it.”
I wouldn’t call it great, but Crystal Skull was entertaining for me. Probably my favorite Indy film, but I’ve never been a big fan of the series.
I think Bill is playing dumb in a sense i dont mean that he is dumb thats not what im saying but its like when you sneak a look at your xmas presents and your parents find out and your all like what? what xbox i dont know what your talking about. Hollywood types do that.
I agree with EctoGlow. He’s playing it down and it seems like he is at odds with someone about the treatment. I still have a good vibe, but what do I know?
Ghostbusters III in CGI coming in 2009. Real, not a lie! They were supposed to show the trailer at ComicCon last year but the projector broke.
Yeah he is the hard sell and yeah Bill Murray is erratic, ask anyone whose worked with him. This interview could be interpreted a million different ways. I say, stay calm, be patient, and see what unfolds.
Ghostbusters III already came out two years ago but all the tv commercial prints got burned in a fire, so they couldn’t advertise it, so only a few theatres picked it up, and only a handful of people saw it. The DVD is comming out on December 32nd!
It seems to me to be not so much a slap-in-the-face as a reality check. Murray doesn’t want to do it unless the script is good. This is a lot better than a few years ago when he was so dead set against it that he got into an argument with Harold Ramis about it on the set of Groundhog Day.
Brian is dead on. Murray is simply making sure things go the right way. It may not happen, but we are still damn close.
Someone, mentioned this earlier, and I concur… Bill does look really great here. And it was awfully nice of him to be so candid.
i told you so…
If you really listen to what bill says in the interview its absolutly nothing diffrent than what he has been saying since his intrest in gb came back when he worked on the game. He may or may not have seen the script he didnt specify he said he isnt going to believe that it until he see’s the script. Now i take it that he is meaning see the script approved which it hasnt been yet and later he says there is no script which we know isnt the case which leads me to believe that he talking about an approved script. But him being a person who owns s tad bit of the rights, with the game being out and an obviously new found intrest with the public where ghostbusters concerned, its obviouse that he knows more than he is saying he does. Actors dont kiss and tell so to speak.
I would hate to see it happen, but if he is so against it and the others are so for it, they could just write him out of the script, people die every day you know. Some freak accident, Venkman got careless with a trap or something.
Patrick, NOBODY cares about your [wet] dreams of Segourney Weaver!
There’s a little thing called REALITY! You can either embrace it and live in the NOW (not 2012), or you can continue to act like some sort of GB 3 psychic, and be constantly proven WRONG time and time again!
The fact of the matter is, the MAJORITY of the GB public (which is us btw) knows who/what you are, so there is NO point whatsoever in arguing with any of us, because for everything you think you know, we know A LOT more! And, YES we’ve seen/read ALL (if not more) of the “info” that you have constantly berated us with (along with all the profanity), but we are mature/smart enough to take it for what it is, SPECULATION! Which means SQUAT until the movie is near completion!
And, BTW? You SERIOUSLY, SERIOUSLY need to learn how to spell…and use proper grammer, because you sound (from the looks of your posts) like a complete moron!
Sorry guys, I just had to get that out of my system.
OK, back on topic.
He’s the male version of Debbie Downer. He’s probably sick of people asking him about it, day in and day out. If you catch him on a good day, he’ll say he’s excited about it. Other days, he’ll say to get the mike out of his face. Typical Hollywood stance. He’s a bit of an egotist, don’t you think? Or, that’s what I got from this interview. “Oh, I’ll just stay home and play Snooker.”
It’s NOT because Bill is “out of the loop,” like a few of you have said. He’s one of the Rights-holders in the film. When was this interview done, by the way? This movie is on a fast-track, and that’s just reading and documenting the dates these stories were in print. Aykroyd received the script. Sept 19th, Reitman had a copy of the script in hand. Sept 23rd, Ramis was in L.A. Oct, Aykroyd says they have a script, but nothing is official. Oct 10th, Reitman says all of the Rightsholders have the script and have approved it and hopefully, Sony will too. And that’s according to Retiman. So this thing, by multiple reports is flying forward at some rate, I think Murray just wants to keep a leash on it. God bless you, Bill. If it’s shit, don’t sign it over. Tell ‘em to F%*! off.
More than likely they’ll continue to work on the script before showing it to Murray. From the sound of it they’ll likely only get one shot with him.
Even if the script is good and Murray goes for it, they still have to work the numbers with the studio. Figuring out the paychecks for this particular project will be a bitch, and could very well stop the project in its tracks as easily as Murray could.
I agree with Prologic9. I don’t think Murray will get a copy of the script until it’s the best darn script ever known to man – or Sumerian god. Everything rides on Murray and they’re not going to screw this up. But on the other hand Bill doing damage control sounds reasonable too. I choose both. Bill means there’s no green lit script in my opinion. Of course there’s tons of GB3 scripts like the old Hellbent script by Dan, but none have been picked up by the studio 100% yet. I think this is what Bill means. There is no official green lit script yet.
That had better be a damn-fine script for Murray! We don’t want to tarnish his long history of Oscar worthy performances in such films as Space Jam, Larger then Life, Garfield, and Zombieland. *Rolls eyes*
Where the HELL did the excitment he had about another GB go, that he had in past interviews?
Honestly, Murray is walking a trecherous, fine line here/now.
He needs to realize that I’m sure all involved will make/have made the script as best as they possibly can. If not, then yes, why do it? I agree with Murray there. But there are certain realistic limits. Let’s be honest…they’re going to write their best. But their never going to get close to any cinematic “second coming”. And if Murray will not join for nothing less, then he’s: just not doing it for “the sake of not doing it”, and believing in his own, hyped ego.
We’re dealing with GB…NOT Gone With the Wind, here.
I just don’t understand why Dan Aykroyd has made so many concessions to his original scripts and vision(s)-(making Murray not just a star, but a SUPER-star in the process)-, why Murray can’t also be a team player, and recognize the quality points of what has been written? To not overlook them, and focus on every possible negative thing, as reason to not do another film. When the less favorable areas of a/the script can be tweaked or changed, if he just colaborated. Instead of taking just a “wait and see, I’ll only do it if it’s REAL good” approach?
With him being such a big “rights holder”, stop being a pre-madonna. Get involved, and make this happen, Mr.Murray! Isn’t that the point?
Cause I’ll tell ya…if it all crumbles this time. We may never see this level of interest or persistence for another GB film, ever again!
your last quote…………..gave me shivers!
I doubt Bill will get involved… unless he dies in the first 5 mins from too much slime.
I think Bill’s just trying to keep everyone from getting all hyped up just to let there be a huge letdown.I think he holds Ghostbusters up there somewhere we all do…with a lot of respect and doesnt want to taint something that we all love so much. As he says,if its a good script he’d do it but he just doesnt wanna make another one to make another one. I say he gets a hold of Dan Harold and Ivan and throws in some creative ideas of his own to help get things rolling in the proper direction.
not exactly the kind of news I wanted to hear from him, but at least he didnt say “no way, I dont care how good the script is, Im not doing another Ghostbuusters movie” and Im surprised there wasnt any mention of Zombieland or the infamous scene w/ Woody
You guys ever seen the Steve Martin / Eddie Murphy film “Bowfinger?”
‘Cause Aykroyd, Ramis, Hudson and Reitman could easily get Bill involved without his knowledge, if they wanted
That premier interview date was Oct. 14th. yesterday.. so his beliefs and comments are very current.
What bait and switch did they use on Bill in the second Ghostbusters movie. This is the first I’ve heard of something like this.
Finally, some cold water poured on the raging Ghostbusters 3 wildfires. Don’t take that as me not wanting to see a GB3 become a reality, but I think we’ve all allowed the overflow of Ghostbusters love this year (with the 25th anniversary, the video game, etc) cloud our minds to varying degrees. Leave it to Bill Murray to be the one who has to point out that aside from a script being worked on, nothing’s even close to being set in stone yet. And if he hasn’t agreed to anything, then the project is just as much wishful thinking as it was a few years ago.
Of course, some people see stuff like this clip and assume it cannot possibly be correct, because it runs directly opposite to the imaginary sources they’ve been recycling for years, so they invent fantastic new lies to add to the mountain of false information and rumor they’ve been shouting from the top of for so long. All it took was two seconds on google to know that video is less than a day old – but in comes those who want to be believed, to be the one in the know, the one on the inside, and the one who usually has a VERY poor grasp on grammar. Why these kinds of folks (well, we all know it’s just one person) are allowed to continue to run roughshod over this site, I do not know.
but…maybe Bill wasn’t aware of Reitman’s outing few days ago? Ivan’s words were clear: “THe script IS approved”
Well Reitman simply said the plot was approved by all parties. People are making up pretty ridiculous conspiracy theories as to why Murray said there is no script. He didn’t say it in context of “there is no approved script” He said there was no script at all.
It makes sense that he has not seen the script. Ramis said in an interview several months ago, that he hadn’t spoke with Murray and would wait until they had a finished script to show him. If Bill does not like the script then it is over. So I’m sure they are getting everything finalized, approved by sony, and all the drafts done before they send it to Murray. The bad news here is this. Everyone is asking Murray about Ghostbusters instead of the projects he’s out promoting and the longer they take with this script shenanigans “Been close to a year and a half in the writing” the more agitated I’m sure Murray will get.
What also worries me is the bad drama the office writers write. Well bad comedy as well. But there will probably be some stupid @ss drama in it. If you remember the first film it really had almost none of that. It wasn’t too serious, it was just joke after joke without dwelling on relationship drama.
Yep, this is pretty much good news I think. Bill’s attitude means that if GB3 is gonna be made, its gonna be made RIGHT. It’s either gonna be insanely, unspeakably MIND-BLOWING or it’s gonna be nothing at all. Bill is simply reassuring us that GB3, if it is made, will be made for only the right reasons and will be of the highest quality. So any fears you have about silly Judd Apatow-type actors like Steve Carrell, or even Ben Stiller and Jack Black types, screwing up Ghostbusters 3…. well, you can lay those fears to rest. Bill Murray isn’t gonna let that happen; GB is his baby too, not just Dan or Harold or Ivan’s.
The only bad thing about this all is that, the right script needs to be produced sooner rather than later. I don’t think they have the right script yet, and this reawakened love for Ghostbusters, in light of the 25th anniversary, etc., is not going to last forever, and neither will the guys be fit for the job forever. I think the next 2-3 years is when things have REALLY got to come together. NOW is the time, NOW is our chance to get this thing going. The stars are aligned, but only for a short while. So hopefully this dream script gets produced asap.
….and on the issue of the script, I’m wondering if they’ve even consulted Bill at all, like on the idea and everything. If Bill is so nitpicky (in the good way of course), I think they ought to get a basic story idea approved by him first if they haven’t; maybe even involve him in the creative process if he’s game. Otherwise, if they’re just pumping out script after script, and only getting Bill’s word on the FINAL product – well then, this approval process could take years. It TAKES the better part of a year to write these things generally. And if the writers are drafting out story ideas which are destined for Bill’s disapproval simply by their inherent, crappy nature, well then, this approach needs to be changed. …So hopefully the powers that be start to involve Bill in the creative process more, and earlier on, for each proposed script. Let’s get a story idea approved first, then these script drafts won’t be such a waste of time.
Bill Murray has already agreed to a Ghostbusters 3 that’s what Harold said on Sept.30th. The script is done everyone has a copy of the script and Sony will like the script and they will make it because the Original GB’s likes the GB3 script as well. Sigourney is back which I’m pleased about and she liked the script to and that’s why she’s back on board! It’s Gona Happen in 2012 and I can’t wait!!
It’s Gonna Happen in 2012 so why worry? You guys go way overboard!
