Well, someone out there is getting their hands on the Hot Wheels Ecto-1 – sadly it appears to be eBay resellers and scruples-free Wal-Mart employees. I’m not going to advocate people use eBay unless they’re desperate, but at the very least it provides us with a nice look at the car’s packaging.
[UPDATE]
Turns out some locations have variant packaging – which means you have two to watch out for. However, Hot Wheels tends to space their releases through the year, so it’s apparently possible for some locations to not see it for awhile yet. On top of that, it’s one per box… eBay is starting to look good after all.

I keep trying to hunt this thing down. So far I haven’t seen it, or any other 2010 cars that were due out in Jan.
I got two at the Toys R Us down the street from where i work, about a week after they were supposed to come out, and they also had the happy faced stay puft banks there as well. I got the only two i could find. I still look at other places too, but have not seen them except for that one time.
Honestly, i have also been trying to track them down, with four retailers in my area (target, two wal-marts, and a Kmart) without avail. Im starting to loose faith in Mattel. I never saw the second wave of the star trek line at any of these stores either. I stopped shopping Hasbro because of this and I may have to do the same with these guys.
I want it, but I won´t found them here in Mexico. :s
I’ve been checking my local stores as well, but no Ectos to be found.
There is also a packaging variation found at Target stores that has white snowflakes printed on the blue background.
After nearly a month of searching I caved. I got one off Ebay. If you modify your search to “Buy It Now” and “Lowest Pice Plus Shipping” you should be able to find one for under $10 total. I found one for $8.
Found one on eBay for $6 (total including shipping)…not bad I guess. Beats sucking up gas riding all over town just to be disappointed.

Other than the hubcaps and roof rack, she’s a beauty. I just saw a couple of the new Hotwheels DeLoreans at a local supermarket, but decided not to make the impulse buy. I doubt I could resist for Ecto-1, especially hearing about all the troubles finding them. I’ll be keeping an eye out, and hoping TRU or Wal Mart will have ‘em!
I checked a Walmart and a Target last week and neither had it. They had plenty of the other new cars, but not Ecto. At 97 cents a pop, I would have bought one, two, or even three at either of these stores instead of resorting to eBay – which I may not do anyway since it’s not worth the overpricing. Maybe if they were Johnny Lighting quality they’d be worth the overpricing, but not Hot Wheels quality.

Here’s a picture of that variant packaging.
Still no luck been searching at target/walmart/kmart. Guess this is one thing that I dont need. Am not willing to pay $8-$10 for a hotwheel on ebay. Oh well.
FINALLY these have started appearing officially in the uk…!
Just got mine from a Toys R Us!
(only one on the shelf)
