I’ll admit I’m a late-coming fan to The Big Bang Theory – it’s kind of like Good Times for nerds. Funny and loving, but at a core level, a little demeaning. But hell, if they’re going to keep making stupid pop culture references I like, then I’m in.
Last night (@protoncharging Twitter followers would have known this 24 hours ago) the opening of the show managed to cram a giant hug for Ghostbusters, and funny dig at Ghostbusters 2, all in ten seconds and one joke, when the cast brings home a box of random yard sale stuff, only to find a “final draft Ghostbusters script with slime stain!… oh, you’re right it’s Ghostbusters 2, nevermind.”
Canadians can catch the episode on CTV’s website, and Americans can see a clip, which looks like it will include the scene, at CBS’s website.
Of course The Big Bang Theory writers are Ghostbusters fans… who isn’t?

They should have been able to tell them apart: Ghostbusters would have green slime; Ghostbusters II, pink.
The clip I saw had to do with Lord of the Rings and nothing to do with Ghostbusters, what am I doing wrong?
If you’re watching on the CBS site, probably nothing – I’m blocked from seeing the clip, as I’m in Canada. I could only guess based on what was on the site. But, that is the right episode, with the Ring joke – you might have to poke around – if you figure out the right clips, let me know.
Try the CTV site – maybe with luck it won’t block Americans.
Wow Anyone who thinks Big Bang Theory is “demeaning” is an idiot. Take it for what it is accept who we all are and move on.
Fair enough. Anybody that doesn’t see how it’s a little demeaning is also an idiot.
Moving on…
A great deal of clips made it on to YouTube, apparently. I didn’t see any GB2 mentionings, but I didn’t exactly cycle through twenty minutes of the show either.
This was in the opening three minutes of the show, just before the title credits run, so it shouldn’t take a lot of scanning.
Whatever you wanna think man, All I’m saying is when someone looks at me when I’m in my gear in public and someone says something “demeaning” like “you know you look like a tool” I look right back at them and say yes sir I do would you like a photo or an autograph to take home to your kids, wife, husband, grandma, ect. All I’m getting at is their are people out there in the real world that are just like the characters on big bang and to call it demeaning is just ridiculous its a tv show for one and what it all really boils down to is security in ones self. Which I personally have plenty of. I’m just saying if anyone watches this show and feels insulted or put down by it then you need to take a good long hard look in the mirror and come to terms with some things.
Either that or change who you are entirely because its obvious you are not comfortable with who you are. If that doesn’t work I suggest not watching it if its going to hurt your feelings by the way they portray nerds. I damn proud to be a geek, nerd, dork whatever you wanna call it. I wear my Nerd with pride my friend its not demeaning in anyway shape or form.
In all honesty I was not pointing that comment of being an idiot to you directly I didn’t word it right and for that I am sorry. However my point still stands if you watch big bang and feel insulted or put down then you have issues with insecurity. Not pointing the finger at you this is more of a message to anyone who feels this way. Get mad or hurt or upset at me for stating an obvious truth if you want but being who I am now was a struggle for me for many years until one day I just decided F*** it all I know that might be hard for most people to do and I’m not going to get into it. I’m just saying that TO ME its not demeaning and I hope, to those who find it that way, you can begin to look at the show for what it is, see the comedy in it and laugh at whatever it is they do in an episode that you your self may do in everyday life. NERDS UNITE TOGETHER WE ARE THE RULERS OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!……Seriously ask Bill gates and George Lucas…..;)
Dude – it’s got nothing to do with me and it’s certainly got nothing to do with you. The show is built on the idea of haha lookit the nerds. That’s the very definition of demeaning. Simple as that. That’s where my comment began and ended.
Yes, you really worded it badly, as in you worded it AT ME. Then you followed up by telling me I have insecurities… what the hell?
I made one comment and you’ve turned it into all-about-you theater. You sure I’M the one with issues?
And this time, unlike the last two times, put a little thought into it before you hit that submit button, please.
You know what, I just re-read your post. Holy shit! You read that post and decided the show hurts my feelings? What’s wrong with you? That’s some broken social skills right there, honestly…
How do you figure I run a Ghostbusters website for 15 years and NOT have a grip on my nerdness? Man, that’s some self-centered, brass balls you’ve got…
I’m completely speechless. Nothing I can say or do is going to fix this. Its not an “all about me theater” I’m simply stating I don’t find it demeaning at all and if anyone does then to me like I said before either don’t watch it or change who you are. Simple as that. The show is great its funny and everyone one should enjoy it for what it is. I again was not attacking you as I said before this was something that I put out for anyone who feels that way about it. If that’s honestly what you took from it and you’re gonna get all offended by it then yeah I guess I was talking to you after all. Nothing I can do but say I’m sorry (again) and just hope you can understand the point of the post its self.
I’ll say it again. I was not pointing YOU out I didn’t word it well the first time I admit that. The second post again was not directed at you. But if you took that much offense by it then I guess it really was.
Back on subject it was nice to see/here a ghost busters reference on the show. Great show. One of the few that got picked up for 2 seasons at once.
Chris, show me on the doll where Big Bang Theory touched you…
Y’know, I haven’t really given this show a chance and I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s time to pick up the first season and give it a spin.
Id say if you can find it used troy go for it or rent it before you spend a lot. Personally I think it is well worth it. Especially season 1.
Netsolo – the gas can life of any bonfire party…
Don’t rent it, just find it and go for it. Jim Parsons’ made a sitcom character for the ages with Sheldon.
Ecto, if you were speechless, this would have gone better. I’ll walk you through it, since all your posts are half-apologies wrapped in confusion and reitteration about how you are and how you think I am; You called me an idiot, which I didn’t like. You said, albeit two paragraphs deep in your reply, that it was an error, which would be fine then, only…
You move on to tell me again that I’m wrong and that I’m offended by it and that I should stop watching the show or change, which is incredibly presumptive on both counts. This is on top of paragraphs of how proud you are to be a fan – awesome. But, that’s you juxtaposing that I’m somehow not. Or at least, that’s what it means when you do that – you’ve demonstrated you may not understand what you’re saying most of the time.
Says right in the post, I’m a fan. It also says the show is funny and loving of its subjects. So no, I’m not going to stop watching – I enjoy it too much. But I’m not changing either – I’ve been grade A geek longer than you’ve been alive and yeah, the show is, a little, like I said, demeaning.
Moving on…
I agree…….EctoGlow is definately NOT speachless. I’ve seen posts like this from him many times. May I suggest a discussion every now and then?…..without namecalling?…..seriously.
BBT is such a great tv show, and I was expecting some GB references… you know, scientists talking about scientists… I saw it coming.
You’ve got your opinion cast and I’ve got mine I’m willing to leave it at that. But I stand by what I said weather or not you who is or isn’t right or wrong.
Sorry about the out of place you. My bad.
Castewar is my hero!
does the big bang theory have a laugh track? i mean it is CBS…
i think ecto glow you need to take a look at yourself for a second, you say your a fan of the big bang theory and ghostbusters, but your bashing the creator of a ghostbusters website and his comment about the big bang theory which is a thumbs up for the show and worst of all your doing it on his own website. Also why dont you think its demeaning that they use stereotypical nerds to get laughs?
Personally, I don’t think the show uses stereotypical nerds. I think the show is written by people who know what ACTUAL nerds are like, possibly because they are nerds themselves. All of the references made in the show do point to the writers having intimate knowledge of nerdyness.
The characters all remind me of myself or someone that I know, which is why I find them endearing. That’s why the show is funny to me, the characters seem realistic. I do not identify with nerd characters on most OTHER shows, however, because they are usually demeaning. The Hollywood formula seems to be recycling Steve Urkel and putting an XBOX controller or computer keyboard in front of him. Since most writers have never bothered to actually talk or relate to a nerd in the wild, they have no idea how to write dialog for them, either. I don’t get that sense when I watch Big Bang Theory.
Anyway, good reference to GB, and yes, I lol’d.
Kevinj319 That is what I (for what ever reason) Couldn’t seem to put into words myself. Joe for your answer to the why do I not see it as demeaning read Kevin’s post that’s exactly why I don’t think it is.
As for bashing castewar. I will say this again I was wrong in calling him an idiot and for a third time I apologized. However Everything else I said in the second post I stand by. If anyone feels that this show is demeaning then don’t watch it. If you like it and still want to have that demeaning feeling every time you watch it. Go ahead I don’t care. When someone says that something is demeaning it implies that it is a negative to said person in this case where I made the comment about the show hurting peoples feelings THAT WHAT I MEANT.
I was not and did not point THAT comment at castewar at any point in my last statement. The closest I came to it was saying that if you took offense to the show or in this case (if its demeaning to you) then the message was intended for whomever felt that way.
Let me me get something very clear to all of you. I know who I am. I’ve got my problems in check I can be a real nice guy and fun to be around but I can also be an arrogant a-hole and I speak my mind.
Cast again I apologize if you cant take that for what it is then well that sucks. If it means nothing to you then that’s to bad. I was wrong to call you an idiot but I stand by the rest of my statements If you really find the show demeaning then that’s your problem. Kevin made every point I wanted to but again for whatever reason I couldn’t seem to get out right.
I would have left this alone as I stated earlier on but I left the page up and it auto refreshed, I read Kevin’s post and felt that he got across what I could not. So I wanted to again apologize for upsetting anyone. But I believe what I said is true it’s my opinion take it or leave it.
In high school, it would have taken me an hour to type that.
Heh yeah me too.
Haha, oh wow…
It’s like watching the show, but instead of four nerds in one apartment, it’s a bunch of nerds in one web discussion.
I’m amazed nobody caught the irony in this.
And EctoDeath hit the score!! XD
You’re using “irony” wrong, Alanis…
The CBS clip linked to starts after the opening title sequence, and thus starts after the GB joke.
Here’s a clip I just uploaded of the GB joke:
* Ghostbusters 1 & 2 reference in The Big Bang Theory episode “The Precious Fragmentation” (3/8/2010, Season 3)

It also appears to me that there might have been a Ghostbusters lunchbox in that box. Take a look at the lunchbox in this pic and discuss what you think is shown on the cover.
http://i41.tinypic.com/2gy6641.jpg
It’s too small for me to make out, but maybe one of you has seen it before and knows what it is.
Looks like it could be, with the colors and shades thereof, but I’m not sure what the images themselves could actually be. Perhaps that Volkswagon Bug is what the yellow blob is (but I don’t think that was in the show itself and I don’t see the artist who was hired to draw the image being inspired by a 2nd rate toy…) and of course the green would be Slimer…the rest might be a ghost being trapped? Certainly don’t remember any such lunch box being around when I was a youngster…
