As they promised earlier in the week, MattyCollector.com has posted on their SDCC exclusives, some of which were outlined on Attack of the Show.
They released pictures of the Real Ghostbusters Retro-Action figure, along with some details. The figure will be $20, stands at 11″ tall, and as Peter is dressed in his movie jumpsuit, as in Citizen Ghost, there will be a variant, which will be a green-translucent Peter – fans will recall that the Ghostbusters movie jumpsuits take on a spectral life of their own. The post also confirms there will be four sound bites from the episode, which suggests there will be four for all the figures.
I’ve reposted their photos, but you might want to check out the Attack of the Show report, as the screengrabs there actually show better, closer details.
Retro-Action™ The Real Ghostbusters™ Peter Venkman™ ($20)
Our all-new line of Retro-Action™ The Real Ghostbusters™ figures arrives this fall, but you can get the first figure at SDCC! We’ll have an exclusive variant version of Peter Venkman™ as a spooky spirit when his outfit was possessed in episode 11 “Citizen Ghost” (variant version has all green clear skin). Best of all, Peter Venkman™ talks! Just press the button on his chest to hear four lines of his dialog from the episode.
You can check out their entire line-up of SDCC swag at their blog.

AWESOME! Need I say more?
Gotta say, not feeling this line. I have all the minimates, the 6″ and 12″ figures and love them. I was really excited about a Real Ghostbusters line and this figure just does nothing for me. Bland looking, not accurate to the show, and even the packaging is ugly. The green variant is somewhat interesting but I’d have to see it first. 20 bucks isn’t too bad, but I still might skip it.
DO WANT!!
Not to harp on it (but I will), if the box said “The Real GhostFighters Peter Vinkman” it would complete the cheap mexican knock off figure look.
Yea…you see this Mattel? This is not a good look. Everything below the neckline is crap. If these figures are going to have less details at least make them interesting or keep them 6″ and plastic only. Geez even the neutrona wand is designed wrong.
So much wasted potential. When these don’t sell they’re going to attribute it to a lack of interest and won’t make any improvements.
Wasted potential? Are you guys serious? I was surprised when Mattel picked up the RGB license at all. You want show-accurate figures? Buy some old Kenner toys from the 80s.
You guys obviously have never seen Mattel’s old figures from the 70s and 80s like this (which is what they’re modeled after).
They’re not gonna create figures down to a science for a 25 year-old niche cartoon based off of the franchise. Keep in kind RGB has plenty of fans, but there are a lot of people that are just in to the films.
I think these figures are pretty damn cool – if you don’t like them, don’t buy them.
I’m not sure if I missed this but since these are classified as SDCC exclusives, will the general public have access to purchase them online through mattycollector.com?
I really dont get the whole ‘real clothing’ aspect of figures, it never scales down properly. I was hoping for a nice new detailed set of 6 inch RGBs for my Kenner Ecto (im the lucky sod that got the proton pack cake and overhauled Kenner ecto), but then i guess as such these arent marketed towards me but even so they almost look like unofficial rip offs.
Not to be picky but this won’t stand 11″. that is an error by the writer of this. It does say Episode 11 “Citizen Ghost” where I believe this person got 11″
This figure is a NIGHTMARE. Nothing on it seems right. Mattys “Retro-Adult-Collector” are in fact the cheapest trash-toys I have ever seen. To bad for the RGB-license…
It’s possible it’s not 11″ but it’s not a small figure. If you look at the Attack of the Show screens (linked) it’s a sizable figure. Or Blair Butler and the brand manager of Mattel are 4′ tall.
As much as the toy itself and the packaging blow, the concept of an unusually-colored ‘hero’ figure sounds worth buying…but are they gonna keep the general public off limits, i.e.: SDCC only, and never anyone else…?
Okay now this is kinda bs… I mean in order to get these awesome Venkman figure(s) I have to get to San Diego comic-con? I don’t have the cash or the means it would take to get there. It’s great this is getting made, it just sucks that even if I am lucky enough to get these Venkman figures I’m gonna have to spend an arm and a leg on ebay to get them. I can’t find anything about these being available on mattycollector.com for purchase. Is there a possibility of that happening?
No sir, I don’t like it. I’ll probably still end up getting a Ray if/when they release it just because I have to have every Ray figure ever made. Wow I’m sad and creepy. lol
Last year the SDCC exclusives were available on mattycollector in very limited supplies after the con.
I hate that its 11 inchs, wanted them to do the RGB line being like 5in, heck i wouldnt have minded it being 8 1/2in. But this here is the SDCC figure, Im guessing they will make a peter thats in his regular outfit color, at some point (if the plan is to make the set of all 4 characters)
Do want but will not spend over $20 from SDCC scalpers. I own every Kenner figure and was excited to hear that Mattel picked up the RGB liscence. Like many fans I wish they were more like the Kenner line with the detail of Matty Collecter’s toys. I could see them selling 2 packs for $30-$40. Have a Ghostbuster Ghost combo in every pack. Ray and The Sandman or The Boogie Man Peter and Samhain or Cathulhu Egon and Possed Egon or Drool the Dog faced Goblin and Winston in his Baseball outfit With the Ghost pitcher or some Gremlins from the Motor City episode. There are so many great figure combos that you could do. They could even do 4 inch figures in the same lineage as the DC universe figures and sell 3-4 packs. If you could market the figures like that it could give Minimates a run for the money.
Not into this. I’ve been a fan all my life. This is a series of figures that I probably will not be buying. If the jumpsuit was blue and the particle thrower was missing, you could consider this a Saturday night fever action figure… Its cool that they’re releasing rgb figures, but how about making them look like the rgb?
It’s an 8 inch figure. It’s based off the old MEGO figures from the 70s and 80s, which were eight inches in scale and big enough for kids to play with without breaking the figures. They were the perfect scale for playability until GI Joe came along and made EVERYTHING 3-3/4 inches. You try playing with some of the crap Hasbro’s put out lately? Not ten minutes out of the overpriced box, you lose the little accessories and break both Luke Skywalker’s arm and legs because the joints are too damn tiny to move.
Anywhere from six to eight inches tall is perfect for playability, display, and general fun. Graphitti had their Big Blast line, with 7-inch tall figures of Matt Wagner’s Grendel, Madman, and Jay and Silent Bob; Marvel and Toy Biz had the Legendary Covers line, which was 8 inches tall and included Cyclops, Rogue and a slew of Marvel characters; hell, even DC and Mattel have stepped into this particular ring before with the DC Super Heroes Silver Age Collection, featuring –you guessed it– EIGHT INCH TALL FIGURES.
And, for crying out loud, has no one here ever heard of STYLE? Of being unique?! The Big Two are so damn busy trying to imitate each other with their 3-3/4 inch figures and their preschool lines so badly, it’s effin’ pathetic! Mattel HAS to do something to stand head and shoulders above Hasbro. They HAVE to be unique to draw in new customers away from all that “Star Wars” crap. Go to any given action figure aisle, and half –HALF– of it is FILLED TO THE BRIM with “Star Wars” figures. Mattel barely gets a section of shelf space because Hasbro has dominated the toy aisle.
So instead of bitching about detail or the cloth clothing, or the packs –which look damn awesome, BTW, a nifty melange of RGB and Movie– be bloody HAPPY that you’re getting any product at all.
Damn kids today don’t know how friggin’ lucky they are….
And PULL UP YOUR PANTS!!
Cliff ummm why does this article title say its 11in ? I dont think its 8in. I hope it is ,but dont think so. Also I agree with everything you said Buster Brad.
*facepalm*
Because it’s an error, Mike. This kind of thing happens all the time. If you or any of you don’t believe me, hit Google and do a search for the new Mattel Retro-Action line.
You know what? No, I’ll do it for you:
http://www.superherotimes.com/newsarchive/005313.php
That’s a review for the new line, specifically, the DC characters of Superman and Lex Luthor in the same Retro-Action figure line. The new Venkman RGB figure is under the same banner, so the figure is 8 inches high as well.
This figure BLOWS, and I will not buy it. Way to destroy our dreams of having updated and accurate RGB figures Mattel.
These figures could have been so much better than this, it just looks rushed and not researched.
What’d they do? Scuplt the faces and call it a day? That thing is a horrible departure from the 6″ and 12″ lines.
At this point, I’m very close to being counted among those who won’t be buying these RGB figures. I might change my mind after seeing a little more video footage of them in action, but even that’s doubtful. It would’ve been nice if Mattel had done a poll or something asking us if we’d rather have the figures like this, or accurate representations 6″ in plastic; I’d bet $100 that the latter option would’ve won by a landslide. Let’s just hope it’s still a possibility, however unlikely.
Looking at the bright side, at least we got pretty accurate representations of the movie figures.
Cliff I appreciate your passion. I am proud to be a ghosthead. I am 31 married and have a basement full of toys, mostly Ghostbusters. I can appreciate the retro-toys but the under 35 GB fans never experienced the retro style toys growing up. I will still buy the figures for the right price but would have preferred action figures over MEGO. I just hope it is popular enough to keep the RGB line going. Most collectors and fans want the same things with new toy lines. Attention to detail, great packaging and pose-ability. The success of any toy line is if it can cross the gap from fan/collector to mainstream. I just hope this toy line can.
I think the biggest problem with this being the first figure we see is it don’t have the RGB feel to it, as soon as we see all the guys suited up like in the show this style could have a very cool feel to it. as for the proton packs it would be cool to have them look like they did in the show.
The pack is somewhat accurate actually. If you look at it closely it seems to resemble the old kenner RGB proton pack. Not completely I’ll admit, but somewhat. It reminds me of a cross between the figure proton pack and the life-size RGB pack that we had.
I agree, this is horrible and a slap in the face to my childhood. Mattle is trying to make a quick buck and the bastards who sell them over priced after comic con will. It’s all BS! >:(
The neutrona wand is horribly off. I hope that is just because it is a prototype. The pack’s okay but they could at least make the wand look like it did on the show. I think they will take care of this though. We will see when Comic-Con rolls around
The only thing I’m not liking about this figure is the pack because it looks like they did 0% research on what it looked like.
Seeing these in Toys r Us in the fall is gonna be real cool though. I also wanted 6 in plastic figures but when I go into TRU and see these hanging on the hook…. its gonna feal like 1989 and I will buy them. Lets hope there priced reasonably at TRU. They should be like $8.99
Mattel has the price listed, at least for the exclusive, at $20. So unless that’s just the SDCC exclusive price, then that will likely be the TRU price as well.
Someone posted a picture of a MEGO figure from a different line (DC Superheros), and yes, the figures, even in TRU, will still be $20.
No citizen ghost was the first episode in the Real Ghostbusters series not episode 11!
I think this figure looks like the venkman from the cheap Slimer and the real ghostbusters short episodes.
No Citizen Ghost wasn’t the first episode.
Buster Brad, you nailed it. I was thinking of saying something similar, but I honestly didn’t have much variety in my toy diet…MEGO toys may have been somewhere in the toy aisles at the stores my Mom bought from, but I sure as heck never noticed ‘em. Aside from RGB, I had Beetlejuice and Batman, and TMNT. And then of course a few misc. toys, like those dinosaurs that didn’t have any packaging, and such, but anyway. Thanx, and sorry for the late post…
As a bit of toy history, this MEGO scale was largely killed by Kenner’s own Star Wars line, not GI Joe. The smaller scale was more appealing for one reason: vehicles. That’s why Joe and pretty much every boy’s toyline adopted it as well. I don’t think anyone would argue that the Ghostbusters toys would have been just as cool without the Ecto-1, so a return to this scale is pretty odd. The outfit and the pack are bizarre too…and where’s the goofy rotating proton stream?
I wish they would have made the Peter in a Brown uniform like the cartoon is supposed to be. Not really happy about this figure.
I never liked the ordinary show colours, wanted them to be like the GHOSTBUSTERS.
But still, this suit is pretty close to reassembling the brown one…
But maybe they should have put it on some one else. Maybe its a prototype. I don’t give a ghost, since i will buy it, like i did in the 80s.
Sincerely,
Bustin’ Out
