PC on Mad World Radio

Posted on May 20, 2008

I’m going to be shooting the breeze with self-confessed ghosthead Odd on Mad Word Radio today, Tuesday, May 20th. The show starts at 8PM EST, but I’m not on until 9PM EST, so bear that in mind. Also, bear in mind that the host is called Odd, so I can’t promise exactly how much we’ll be talking about Ghostbusters specifically… but then, when you get two ghostheads together, they have to compare notes, so, statistically speaking…

I believe there might be a real-time chat or number to call, so you’re always welcome to listen in and see if you can’t steer things. Also, I may, possibly, try and slip in a code word - first person to email me about it, I’ll send them a button. Not just a PC button, but a replica of an old school 1984 button I made a limited amount of (that reads “I’m a Ghostbuster” around the GB logo.) And if I can do it, you’ll know what the code word is, because I’ll actually say, “the code word is…” first. See, secret agent stuff is easy.

You can tune in to listen live, here.

I can mark #34 off the before-I-die list…

Posted on May 19, 2008

(I can also cross off #47, Swim With the Dolphins, because it costs $250.)

Ever since I first discovered that Ghostbuster fans at Valve Software had found a way to hide a piece of their favorite movie in their game, I’ve always wanted to do the same. I’ve succeeded a few times in a few small ways - familiar names tend to appear as characters here at there. My most recent game, Sword of the Stars (that’s my day job, by the way, for those of you that don’t know - and why would you. It’s rarely relevant) I gave some planets some most excellent names, but I’m most proud of the player avatar above - I didn’t draw it, rather it was at my request. The ever so familiar, but I can’t put a name to the face, (no really, I can’t) SolForce officer is my avatar of choice when I play - as you might expect. I’m sure I’ll have ample opportunities to fly my GB flag again, but seeing as the Collector’s Edition of the game just hit shelves, I thought it was a good time to share.

Contest Winners!

Posted on April 25, 2008

OK, I’m done! It took awhile to go through all the entries - everyone had some inspired picks, which makes me even happier that I opted to send consolation buttons to everyone who entered. There were a lot of like-minded thinking as well, which I’m going to play with in the coming days, just out of curiosity (which actor was named the most? Which actor was offered the most parts? etc.) And for fun, I’m going to mash-up the picks of the five winners - the results are odd, yet compelling. But right now, here are the winners of the Proton Charging / GBFans.com ID card contest - each of whom will get their very own PC/GBFans ID card.

Tony Marchetti
Peter Mangels
Jason Rhind
John Wright
Adam Green

Congrats to you, I’ll be contacting you shortly with what you need to do to get your card. The rest of you, I will be emailing shortly to find out where to send your buttons!

Remember, if you didn’t win, you can still get your own ID Card through GBFans.com - click here for the card generator/store!

ID card contest - CLOSED!

Posted on April 24, 2008

OK, you’ve all got until midnight PST to get your entries in for the contest. Don’t send any after midnight, it will only make me cranky, and I’ll make you send ME a button.

[UPDATE] Contest Closed! And there were a lot of you. A lot. So, it may take awhile to get the winners up. Don’t be emailing me or anything - I haven’t forgotten. Good luck, and remember, there’s a button in it for you, regardless.

Win a fan ID card! 2 days left

Posted on April 22, 2008

The response to the ID card contest has been huuuuge, and there are still two days left to get your Ghostbusters re-cast list in. The response has been enough that I think I’m going to send out the last of last year’s batch of Proton Charging buttons to everyone who entered (while supplies last - right now, there’s just enough for all, I think, so… first come, first served, etc.)

Anyone wishing to have a look at the cards (or anyone wishing to just go ahead and buy their own) can check out the GBFans ID card generator. The five winners will get the supa-cool PC cards (and maybe buttons - we’ll see.)

Database hiccup - comments offline

Posted on February 4, 2008

Something has hiccupped on my server, and it thinks the date is yesterday… or tomorrow, I’m still sorting it out. As a result, you can’t comment (you’ll get a message that you’re posting too fast and that you have to wait 15 seconds - wait all you want, you probably won’t be able to post for awhile.)

Sorry for the hassle - I know you’ve likely got some doozies. Just be patient - if it’s not working by the time you read this, it will soon.

Martin Sikes 1968-2007

Posted on January 7, 2008

A friend of mine died over the holidays, a fact I just discovered today, just in time to attend his memorial. It was the kind of memorial all of us would be lucky to deserve - I have no official count, but given the size of the lecture hall we were in, the gathering of family and friends easily numbered hundreds and hundreds. I will not claim we were close friends - I will proudly claim that we were friends - but I learned a lot about about the man today.

I knew he was a fantastic engineer, I just never knew how brilliant he really was. And I knew he had a zeal for learning, I just never know how varied his interests were.
