Shot on Site: Stay fit, keep sharp, make good decisions!

Posted on July 4, 2008

A quick one this time (and a request, no less) - some of the larger sequences are big undertakings! But this one is pretty straight forward.

Our favorite wannabe, Louis, is running to catch a bus, which is just located off the corner of East 75th and 1st Ave (practically around the corner from Dana’s apartment and carriage chase.)

In one single shot, we can make out a restaurant name on a blue awning, “The Wicked Wolf.” We can also see a street sign with “E. 75th” on it. And sure enough, there is a Wicked Wolf on East 75th street. The awning is now red, painted over the restaurant name, but we can still see the end of a second sign, above the awning, that is still there - we can make out the words “Bar and Restaurant” - Also, the neon rimmed clock can also still be seen.

And as a bonus treat, in the background, you can see the Slimer driven bus Louis will soon board. It’s not powered up, but rather parked where it was assumed you wouldn’t see it as the camera focuses on Louis running along!

Custom Ghostbusters Xbox360 skin

Posted on June 27, 2008

360 skin
Normally I’m leery on unlicensed Ghostbusters anything on ebay, but in this case, it is kind of cool. Someone in California is printing Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 skins for the Xbox 360. They are printed on vinyl (not paper sticker) and look pretty sharp, as seen by these photos by QZEDDEMOORE, who bought one.

Buyer beware kids - but if you’ve ever wanted to customize your Xbox rig, short of someone making something official, this is an option. Or, maybe you want to try your own hand at it - the web has no lack of resources to help. Just remember to send PC a picture, yeah?

Shot On Site: That’s My Baby!

Posted on June 25, 2008

Rolling along from the last Shot On Site, I’m still in a Ghostbusters 2 frame of mind. And so, I present to you 325 East 77th Street, New York. This is the site of Dana’s post-Gozerian apartment with her baby boy, Oscar. We first see the apartment as Dana approaches with bags fulls of groceries and a carriage full of Oscar - however, having stepped in some pink goo (likely shot in LA by a second unit practical effects team), things soon go wrong and the carriage careens off on its own, mom in pursuit. The entire sequence is shot on 77th Street, starting near the West end of the block, and moving down to 1st Ave, where Oscar has a near encounter with a bus.

To kick things off, I’ll start with some bits of trivia from the tail-end of the scene, which will make for a nice bookend effect, as this post will end with the same shot and a big piece of trivia I’ve dug up. Observe;

Bus
Only briefly seen flashing by (not counting the nice continuity of seeing it in the distance the shot before), the bus is the M15 - this is an actual Manhattan bus route that actually travels the route seen in the movie. You can see the bus’s number on the front - you can also see an ad for HOT 97 FM. What’s interesting about HOT 97 FM, is that the station as advertised was barely a few months old when the scene was shot in the fall/winter of 1988/1989. A station purchase saw the formerly WYNY 97 swap frequencies with WQHT 103 FM (a dance music station.) The station’s claim to fame was playing the same 12 inch version of popular dance tracks you could hear in the clubs. And now you know.

On with the breakdown.

Ghostbusters 1 and 2 Blu-Ray release date

Posted on June 18, 2008

Tyler sent in this list of Blu-Ray release dates from, appropriately, releaselists.com - while not official from Sony, it would be what you would call a secondary source - as it, it’s likely they got their numbers from somewhere official.

The list has a release date of October 21st for Ghostbusters 1 and a two-disc set with Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2. The ONLY way to get Ghostbusters 2 is in the two-disc set, apparently (which doesn’t bode well for there being any Ghostbusters 2 extras on the disc.)

Shot On Site: The hole in 1st Ave.

Posted on June 18, 2008

Not to spoil the surprise, but in Ghostbusters 2, the hole the team cuts in 1st Avenue isn’t 1st Avenue. It’s not even New York - which is how the post came about, starting with me watching Ghostbusters 2 on home video. The more I watched that scene, the more it didn’t feel quite right. They made it look like New York, but it didn’t feel like New York (no matter how many “New York Times” vans they had drive by.) It felt like Los Angeles - and given the hassles they had shooting in New York, it’s not hard to imagine the production would set-up a literal traffic obstruction somewhere with, well, less traffic.

As it turns out, it was shot in LA - East 8th Ave and South Broadway (not too terribly far from the Biltmore Hotel, a more famous instance of LA standing in for New York in a Ghostbusters movie) to be exact.
Like so;

digsite breakdown

Before I get into details, feel free to check out the site yourself on Google Maps - you can pan, zoom, and generally slide around the site. See if you can spot the site (but a warning - there’s been a big change from when the movie was filmed.)

Game Daily reaction to Ghostbusters game

Posted on June 17, 2008

Game Daily posted their thoughts on the Ghostbusters game demo they were witness too - overall, they had the same reaction as anyone else; they loved it. What was interested is that they said the game will feature music from the movies (plural) as well as 70 minutes of unreleased tracks. 70 minutes!? Some questions obviously come to mind - does this mean we’ll hear some of the music from Randy Edelman’s Ghostbusters 2 score? And where are they finding 70s minutes of unreleased tracks (given we have all of Elmer Bernstein’s GB1 score) - Edelman’s score was never released, so perhaps that’s some of where the 70s minutes is coming from. Hard to say, but as I said, interesting to consider.

Thanks to staypuft428 for the heads up.

Yes, have some.

Posted on May 30, 2008

We’re two months away from the San Diego Comic Con and whatever that brings (a big announcement and a lot of new Ghostbusters products), and five months away from the release of most of those products. And like good fans, we want it all now. Now!

Which is usually when the imagination runs wild, so now might be a good time to take stock of all things Ghostbusters. After the leap, I’ve arranged everything in the works (and a couple of things that may or may not be in the works) according to how much we know. Some things are a lock (like the game) and somethings are borderline wishful thinking - if it wasn’t turning into THE year for all things Ghostbusters, they’d be complete fiction. What’s not on the list are hopes - like a new comic series, or toys, or whatever. We all have those hopes, and they could certainly happen - there’s been enough suggestion that there’s still lots of great stuff to come, but we haven’t heard a single thing, so no sense confusing the issue.

All right - so, where we at?

Busting makes you feel… check as applies

Posted on May 28, 2008

I’ve recently become addicted to GraphJam, which is in the same vein as LoLcats, only using graphs and flowcharts. You know, like this;
The Plan
I did that one. The thing is, that makes exactly three Ghostbusters jokes on GraphJam, mine isn’t even technically “on” the site, as it’s still in the submissions pile, and one is the easy joke and the other I’m still scratching my head over. So, why not try your hand - GraphJam has an explanation/tutorial on making them. Then submit them to GraphJam - let’s see if we can’t get some more GB love on their site. Also, if you’ve got a zinger, send them my way - we’ll start a thread at GBFans or something.

Who ya gonna call? Wastebusters!

Posted on May 18, 2008

Matthew keeps the video hits comin’ with this clip from ABC’s Earth Day Special in 1990 (one year after Ghostbusters 2) - if you get to 5:15, you’ll get to hear from Elon Spengler, “brother” to Egon, and founder of Wastebusters. You have to see it to believe it, trust me.
