Tom Culnan - mechanical effects
Posted on August 18, 2008

Stateofmain recently posted some photos of her father Tom Culnan, who worked on both Ghostbusters films and the Universal Studios Spooktacular, tinkering on a Slimer mechanism. There’s also a picture of her as a young girl with a skinned, but unpainted Onion Head. She’s not sure if it’s a prototype or not, though she does say it’s a possibility. Sadly her use of the past tense suggests Mr. Culnan is no longer with us - but given her pictures of attending the recent midnight showing of Ghostbusters in her area, she’s very proud of the role he played in the biggest comedy goin’. I’m sure we all appreciate her sharing those memories with us.

Bernie Brillstein 1931-2008
Posted on August 7, 2008
You’ve probably seen the name - from all the times you’ve watched Ghostbusters (and many many other movies and TV shows as well), the name keeps popping up again and again, until it’s stuck in your mind. Bernie Brillstein was a one of the Hollywood old-guard, and executive producer on both Ghostbusters films. He often worked with Dan Aykroyd, having produced both The Blues Brothers and Dragnet. He also served as an executive consultant on a few episodes of The Real Ghostbusters.
Mr. Brillstein passed away tonight after a prolonged illness at the age of 77. We can only hope he was able to see some of the the year’s revived public interest in the comedies he helped make happen.

Newsarama sits down with Tokyopop Ghostbusters crew
Posted on August 6, 2008
Newsarama has fired off a series of questions to the writers and artists working on the Tokyopop Ghostbusters book, due this fall. Read the whole interview here. Big thanks to JP for the spot.
Newsarama: Matt, can you give a brief description of some of the stories you have written for this book?
MY: Well, the stories all focus on life in New York. So, we’ve got the team battling the ghost of a dead theater critic. There’s also a story about a possessed fashion designer and her line of hunted haute couture.
You’ve got a great mix of old and new. We’ve tried to capture the characters and the essence of the story, but the ideas are funny and fresh. Same with the artwork. And it’s a great fit for manga because you have these supernatural forces and entities but you also need clever characterization and dialogue. TokyoPop has experience blending these elements effectively because many of our titles have that same mix of the unreal and the everyday. I guess TokyoPop is trying to capture the essence by hiring me and Nate [Johnson], who have the same kind of Second City sketch comedy background as Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis.

Ghostbusters on iTunes
Posted on August 6, 2008
Why, yes, technically I’m perfectly capable of creating my own iPhone/iPod ready version of Ghostbusters. But if I weren’t, I could, at this very moment, buy it on iTunes. So far, I can only confirm it’s available in the US/Canadian iTunes store.
Oh, who am I kidding. I’m buying a copy. Be warned though - it’s relatively cheap at $9.99 a copy ($3.99 to rent - but why?), but massive in size, at 1.17Gigs. Yeesh! Thanks to pkNRG for the heads up - I actually went looking for it when I first got my player, but it wasn’t there. And they say wishes don’t come true…

More on EGB DVD
Posted on August 6, 2008
Tristan (who’s been working on something very special for the next issue of Cereal:Geek - more on that later) spotted this - an Australian listing for a Sony Pictures release of Extreme Ghostbusters on DVD. Add that to what we’ve heard, this is very encouraging! But still, we’re without hard facts. Stay Tuned!

“I don’t think he’s human”
Posted on August 6, 2008
I don’t normally like my pop culture mixed with politics - it leaves a bit a sour taste. But, given some of the shenanigans lately, it was a given someone was going to poke a little fun. I’m always happy when people can inject humour into the mix. It means all is not lost, yet. I’m not going to leave the comments open - you can discuss at the other site. Thanks to Lucas for the link.

xkcd gb

Web comics don’t come hipper or more hardcore than xkcd. There’s something very awesome that he’s turned his eyes upon Ghostbusters. Thank you Mr. Randall for the link!
[UPDATE] See, even Wil Wheaton likes it - that’s how web hip the strip is.

The Proton Charging-80s Tees Big Ass Contest - closed!
Posted on August 5, 2008

Whoo! Exciting!
Actually, I wrote this days in advance, and set the timer to Midnight, August 5th - the closing date for the contest - so I’m not technically excited. I’m probably asleep.
But, I’ve seen the things you’ve been submitting and heard the things you’ve been doing, and I am, overall, very excited. Those of you that entered, thank you - I will contact you all shortly, and suffice to say with that pile of swag I gathered, I think I can swing it that nobody walks away empty handed!
Thanks gang!

We Are Legion: The Middleman writer Hans Beimler
Posted on August 5, 2008
It probably shouldn’t be a surprise that a show - in this case, ABC’s The Middleman - which is based on a comic book, about an artist conscripted by a nameless secret agent to help defend the world from the bizarre, would have Ghostbusters references. What is surprising is the sheer number of them!
My only real introduction to the show was when Sci-Fi magazine gave it a big thumbs up - which is to say it’s 8 episodes in and I haven’t seen a single episode. But I tripped over a Zap2It review of last night’s episode; The Ectoplasmic Panhellenic Investigation.
I didn’t read the synopsis too much (I’m reluctant to link to it - it’s spoiler-tastic), but a Ghostbuster fan would be in heaven from all the nods. Let’s just say familiar names abound. I’m off to find a copy.
Anybody here actually watch this show? Is it worth watching?

SDCC RGB DVD FLV! (aka Comic Com Real Ghostbusters Trailer)
Posted on August 5, 2008
If you were watching all the photos coming out of Comic Con the other week, you may have noticed some TV screens at the Ghostbusters booth showing a trailer for the Real Ghostbusters DVD - well, here it is! Short, but sweet, the trailer hypes the key points of the set, shows the familiar opening titles, and includes a clip of story-lead, J. Michael Straczynski.
Time-Life is taking pre-orders on the set, at 10% off, until September 1st, so that’s less than a month to jump on that offer. Currently only US buyers and Canadian buyers shipping to a US address can order online - I’m trying to find out as many options as possible, but for the moment, those are the two sure-fire ways to get your hands on this DVD collection.
