Stateofmain recently posted some photos of her father Tom Culnan, who worked on both Ghostbusters films and the Universal Studios Spooktacular, tinkering on a Slimer mechanism. There’s also a picture of her as a young girl with a skinned, but unpainted Onion Head. She’s not sure if it’s a prototype or not, though she does say it’s a possibility. Sadly her use of the past tense suggests Mr. Culnan is no longer with us - but given her pictures of attending the recent midnight showing of Ghostbusters in her area, she’s very proud of the role he played in the biggest comedy goin’. I’m sure we all appreciate her sharing those memories with us.

Ghostbusters to show outdoors in BC - and I can’t go

The Prospera Great Outdoor Film Festival will be showing Ghostbusters, weather permitting (Environment Canada gives it a thumbs up, so far), on a two story screen at approx. 8:45 this Friday, August 15th. For more information (like where it’s at - I can’t explain) check their website.

Those of you attending, have a blast - I’ll be on a plane.

After letting fans vote on their favorite box for the Real Ghostbusters DVD set, the winner is in - by the sounds of it, it wasn’t much of a contest, as the big favorite was the firehall, according to TVShowsOnDVD.com. Now we just have to patiently wait to see the final, non-mock-up art!

Bernie Brillstein 1931-2008

You’ve probably seen the name - from all the times you’ve watched Ghostbusters (and many many other movies and TV shows as well), the name keeps popping up again and again, until it’s stuck in your mind. Bernie Brillstein was a one of the Hollywood old-guard, and executive producer on both Ghostbusters films. He often worked with Dan Aykroyd, having produced both The Blues Brothers and Dragnet. He also served as an executive consultant on a few episodes of The Real Ghostbusters.

Mr. Brillstein passed away tonight after a prolonged illness at the age of 77. We can only hope he was able to see some of the the year’s revived public interest in the comedies he helped make happen.

Newsarama has fired off a series of questions to the writers and artists working on the Tokyopop Ghostbusters book, due this fall. Read the whole interview here. Big thanks to JP for the spot.

Newsarama: Matt, can you give a brief description of some of the stories you have written for this book?

MY: Well, the stories all focus on life in New York. So, we’ve got the team battling the ghost of a dead theater critic. There’s also a story about a possessed fashion designer and her line of hunted haute couture.

You’ve got a great mix of old and new. We’ve tried to capture the characters and the essence of the story, but the ideas are funny and fresh. Same with the artwork. And it’s a great fit for manga because you have these supernatural forces and entities but you also need clever characterization and dialogue. TokyoPop has experience blending these elements effectively because many of our titles have that same mix of the unreal and the everyday. I guess TokyoPop is trying to capture the essence by hiring me and Nate [Johnson], who have the same kind of Second City sketch comedy background as Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis.

Why, yes, technically I’m perfectly capable of creating my own iPhone/iPod ready version of Ghostbusters. But if I weren’t, I could, at this very moment, buy it on iTunes. So far, I can only confirm it’s available in the US/Canadian iTunes store.

Oh, who am I kidding. I’m buying a copy. Be warned though - it’s relatively cheap at $9.99 a copy ($3.99 to rent - but why?), but massive in size, at 1.17Gigs. Yeesh! Thanks to pkNRG for the heads up - I actually went looking for it when I first got my player, but it wasn’t there. And they say wishes don’t come true…
