Proton Charging exclusive: heavily overhauled. Heck. Yeah.

Continuing to demonstrate a strong investment in the past history, present anniversary, and future prospects of the Ghostbusters franchise, Sony has revealed a new, completely overhauled, and highly interactive new website to go with their domain.

A billboard site for the first release of Ghostbusters on DVD (for a decade!) and recently a billboard for the Ghostbusters mobile game and Blu-ray edition of the film, the new site promises things even the hardest core, longest term Ghostbusters fan has never seen. And as Sony explained to Proton Charging, they will continue to release materials every month for the foreseeable future.

And yes, it’s pretty much what you think – while there remains no firm plan for a third movie and details still to be worked out before it’s even possible, this site overhaul was conducted not only to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the first film, but with the intention that it help promote a third film, provided that pans out. Like us, Sony is looking upon 2009 as the closest we’ve seen to a franchise revival in years.

Why are you still here?

[UPDATE] The site contains, so far;

– A messageboard
– a video vault that currently shows videos for the video releases
– a products page that features all the current licensed products, and where to buy them
– signing up for updates
– a link to the video game website (I’m assuming I just haven’t found or they will soon add a link to
– a massive photos collection (as hinted at in the post)
– a lot of little in jokes and easter egg surprises, which will hopefully do something at some point.

Of important note – the Ghostbusters items currently out are only available for a limited time, according to the video, so if you think you might want them later, even if you don’t want them now, you might want to toss in that two bucks.

[UPDATE] Sony just sent me more details on the assets – One we didn’t know about? A Stay-Puft costume head! It sounds a lot like the additional assets will be released the same week as the Blu-ray and video game. And we have more pricing, with individual items being as low as 49 cents and all the way up to $4.99. It definitely sounds like fans won’t have to buy a full cost set, just to get one or two items, if that’s their preference.

In Russia, ghosts bust YOU!

There are times when the indomitable spirit of a true fan leaves me speechless. This is one of those times, as some Russian Ghosthead has done his level best to approximate an Ectomobile (skip the Sony Ecto-1 photo from GBFans – it’s the two afterwards you want to have a gander at.)

Frankly, if this were a television show, following a group of Russian Ghostbusters – one is ex-military, one is a Soviet scientist, one is a mechanic, and the other is a slightly dodgy con-artist – and they drove this around, I’d watch it. Religiously.

Atari and Intel to release Ghostbusters:TVG web widget!

Atari and Intel have come together to produce a widget designed with a dozen functions to achieve one simple goal – tell the world about Ghostbusters the videogame. And trust me, I’ve been reading Twitter, there are still people not in the know. Or maybe you just want to show your friends that you’re no mere fan. You are a fanatic…
Well, get ready. Soon, perhaps next week (the widget is undergoing final testing), Atari will be releasing the widget, which will feature excellent game art, a photo gallery, trailers, links to places to buy the game, and a host of other little features, like how to post your GB love on any number of social networks and a countdown clock (WOOHOO!) Check out the full-size version of the image above and stay tuned for more information on where and when you can grab the widget.

Also, keep your ears on. Atari has something else in the works, besides this widget, but I can say no more.

* On Facebook, we are launching a Virtual Ghosthunt where users earn points for posting ghosts to their profile, finding ghosts on their friends’ profiles, and even sending ghosts to infect their friends’ profiles and walls. At the end of the competition, highest scorers will be awarded prizes like an ultimate gaming PC rig with a custom Ghostbusters paint job, Dell Laptops, Intel Processors and Free copies of the game.

After users enter the application, fans will earn points for selecting and posting a ghost in their profile, inviting friends to use the app and slime their friends, which posts a ghost in their profile… similar to a facebook poke type function. The highest scoring players will be awarded prizes like an Ultimate Gaming PC with a custom Ghostbusters paint job, Intel core i7 Processors and free copies of the Ghostbusters game!

* We are also launching an Ultimate Fan Widget that will allow Ghostbuster fanatics to show their support by posting to one of 60 different sites like their Facebook/MySpace pages or even to their iGoogle homepage to receive Ghostbuster updates as soon as they’re released.
